Having watched the highlights of the last day of the Test Series last night I was disappointed about the whole mood of the end of the game.

In the past, winning a series would be something to celebrate, yesterday it was a non-event.

I know that the corruption allegations had an affect, but why were they made in the middle of the match - this took the shine of the remarkable stand by Trott and Broad, and the brilliant bowling by England in the series.

Secondly, is the is the Lords Cricket Ground a hotbed of international terrorism? It was totally contemptabloe that the award ceremony was only attended by the pompous old farts - to coin a rugby union phrase.

England may have won the test series, England fans were robbed of the victory.

When there is a suspicion that there may have been a lot of money on England breaking records, then it sort of takes the shine off the win.
Of course one hopes that this wasn't so, but all it needs is the slightest suspicion, to taint the victory.
Unfortunately, Near and Far East betting syndicates, have affected the outcome of many sorting events all over the world. Remember the 'failure' of the spotlights at a football match in the UK a few years back? That was put down to sabotage in an attempt to keep the scoreline as it was. Obviously there was a lot of money riding on that result.

I'm not suggesting that corruption in any sport should be covered up, but the issue is the timing in which the allegations were made, ie in the middle of a match/just before the end of the series. To me that serves no purpose except to run-down and take attention away from England's achievment

Now let me see. It was announced on Sunday. That's when the News Of The World publishes their newspaper. No good doing it on the Monday (today).
Or have I missed something.

Sadly, betting has got totally out of control. Unfortunately there is always somebody who will get tempted to make a quick buck, especially if they think they can get away with it.

What is sadder, is it would appear that a very good up and coming young player of Pakistan has been harvested/groomed by these syndicates, who do not even care.
I doubt if they will be worried about this promising young lad, but they could have possibly ruined his career.
I know he shouldn't have been tempted, but I dare say the smooth talking syndicate crooks, did a good job at getting him to conform.
That doesn't mean I condone such things.

I just feel very sad for players such as him.

Shame his parents didn't teach him the word "No", Arthur.
I despise cheats, in any walk of life.
If he's a cheat (and I say "If", it's still to be proved) he deserves a life-ban, and a fine of much more than the money he made.

As I've suggested in verse, here, we should go back to Oliver Cromwell's way and make all gambling illegal.

It isn't the fans but the people who make them and use them are the ones I hold in contempt! Do you realize how many crickets it takes to make a fan? I don't know myself but I'll bet its a thousand or more! Even though a cricket is just an insect, killing them off to make a fan is just pathetic, especially when you can make a nice one cheaply out of cardboard.

Cricket fans are beneath contempt..............

I do not support cheating in any way shape or form, but, I recall reading last week that the Pakistan Cricket team were donating their bonuses to the Flood Relief fund. Unforunately I can't remember the exact amount involved (millions in rupees about thirty four thousand in quids) but it was less than a weeks wage for some "big time" soccer players.
As I said I do not approve of cheating but it must be tempting to make a few extra quid when wages seem to be so low.

I agree entirely.

I am just sad that the syndicate got their hooks into him. They will come out of it unscathed. A bit like drug dealers.

Trust Bozo Halfwit to turn a tragedy for cricket into an argument with non- cricket-lovers about his own obsession. Word that begins and ends with T, and has two other letters, comes to mind.

I really hope they are innocent; there was time for the newspaper bastards to concoct the whole thing between the disputed balls, and the publication of the paper. After all, it's fairly easy to predict the past.

But that's a straw. They are probably stupid, or naive, or threatened by scarier powers, or greedy.

""As I've suggested in verse, here, we should go back to Oliver Cromwell's way and make all gambling illegal.""

If you recall, WAV, America once did that with booze. Eventually they had to revoke it, but the crime syndicate which grew out of it is still the greatest scourge in US history.

It's a nice thought, but totally impractical. It would produce much worse corruption than a couple of betting scams.

The only logical response is a life ban upon conviction, for the players involved, probably after a jail sentence for fraud (which is taken quite seriously by the UK authorities), and a longer term in clink for the Mr Fixit who was to be paid more than my total household income for the next ten years.

Arranging a few no-balls may not seem like much, and would have no effect on the match outcome, but Mr Fixit would have believed somebody was willing to lash out £140,000 for it,and must have known that somebody intended to take the bookies for a couple of Mil at least, and that loss gets paid for in due course by the honest punters.

The slag should get a ten stretch "pour encourager les autres".

It's a shame that the instigator would get away scot free (had this been a genuine scam, rather than a NOTW setup).

The players involved now say that their families were being threatened, which I suppose is an excuse, but they would have been happy to take the money.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as match fixing goes in any sport where gambling is involved. I was certain as a young lad watching football that certain games were fixed then.
Sad for sport in general.

Breaking News Flash..... It's been discovered that The Phillistines did not, as was previously thought, die out as a nation - they are alive and well, and living in The United States of America, where a number of them are contributors to 'The Mudcat Cafe' music forum.

Don T: allowing for the history of bootlegging in the U.S.A., e.g., and that, of course, people would break such laws, I'd still make all gambling illegal. And, on a lighter note, Spaw, do you think China's last emperor was the last due to being such a big cricket fan?!

I can't account for some peoples short span of attention either... :)

My bone of contention still is the way in which the story was timed in order to detract from the achievements of the winning side.

Winning a test series, and breaking records in the process should be a thing to celebrate - and there has been no evidence of the need to conduct the award ceremonies away from the public as has been the case in every other test series. I can't imaging that the security at Lords is so bad that it would have posed a major risk.

it comes across to me that NOTW don't give a toss about how many people they upset as long as they line Murdoch's pockets even more, and I can imagine that he would hav ebeen grinning ear-to-ear seing the shine being taken of England's victory.

It is illegal in Pakistan, maybe they should try legalising it.

Only 3 players, including the captain, have been suspended from the Pakistan team. I'm sure I read somewhere that more of the Pakistan team are alleged to be involved. I would scrap the forthcoming one-day competitions and send the whole team home to get this sorted out. How on earth can a true cricket fan watch Pakistan in a t20 match without wondering if the latest no-ball or dropped catch was intentional? I'm waiting for the Ashes series now and will not be tuning into any more of this summer's competitions involving Pakistan.

Too much money invested by the clubs etc Arnie.
However, I do agree. We should send them home and see if we can get another team to come over on short notice.

What if a pakistani takes a catch. Then people will be saying that the English batsman deliberateley gave a catch. It could be never ending.....................
