Son of a gun! He did say "2008", didn't he? I didn't even notice, because I was so sure he was talking about George Bush. Well, that's it, Don Firth! You're finished around here after making that unconscionable racist attack on Mr Obama. ;-D Best fold up your little tent and slink off into the outer darkness. Your liberal credentials are in ruins!

Perhaps I should point out that Chongo has never:

- chocked on a pretzel
- been charged with drunken driving
- or said "misunderestimate"

;-)

He has attempted to destroy a colony of cockroaches with a Thompson submachine gun (necessitating some serious office renovations afterward)...but, hey! No one's perfect. Besides, such a proactive method of "clearing the deck" might be just what Congress needs to get those people moving on vital legislation.

That's exactly the question most Canadians ask themselves every time we have another election! And that's why the national voter turnout gets lower every time...

It's just inconceivable that anybody but the rich still believe this.

The Republican National Committee believes it as do most of the Republicans running foe election this fall and they've said so in unequivocal terms. Otherwise they still wouldn't be pushingg tax cuts for the wealthy & retaining the BuShite tax cuts ad infinitum.

Yeah, but when you drastically cut the taxes on the über-rich, the money gushes up, not just trickles.

He said that that wealth would "trickle down" to them if the rich were not taxed.

It's just inconceivable that anybody but the rich still believe this. Actually the rich probably don't -- they're not stupid. If it did trickle down they'd be far less pleased.

Money always trickles up. Always. The richest 1% went from owning 8% of the wealth in this country in 1980 to 25% now. Which direction did the money trickle? Anybody? Let's not see the same hands now.

As usual, I don't think Bruce has come anywhere near to making his point. The only evidence of death threats presented was the word of the person rude, ignorant and dumb enough to pay good money to put up such a billboard. The message was not designed to start political dialog. The person is suggesting that dueling billboards is political dialog.

Its seems that, in the absence of answering billboards, the billboard owner has carried on a dialog in his head, some of these perceived imaginary messages being "death threats." If the so called reporter of this piece had quoted the police talking about death threats there might have been something credible, but what this looks like to me is one nut job, Mr Billboard, talking to another nut job, Marie the reporter, talking to Bruce, maybe not a nut job but certainly combing tons and tons of media for little slivers that only slightly and sloppily agree with his preconceived positions then presenting this garbage as evidence of some greater truth.

It is easy to see on which side most of the nut jobs are. Bruce's political side has 24% of the US voting against taxing the 1% that controls 25% of the wealth, because a senile old liar, who was a poor actor even as President, Told nut jobs a fairy tale that they wanted to hear. He said that that wealth would "trickle down" to them if the rich were not taxed.

When Clinton and Gingrich were in power this was proved NOT TO BE TRUE. Yet under Bush and since then it has been repeated like a mantra. I believe that any member of the Economic Church of Ronnie, is the worst kind of nut job, one who is ignorant and foolish because they prefer fairy tales to information.

String,

The death threat was against the person who put up the anti-Obama billboard.

NOT against Obama.

Joe Offer,

"You know, I would not put faith in the kind of people who issue death threats, whoever they are. I would hope they are not representative of anybody, so I think it would be foolish to blame either the right or the left for death threats made in their name."

I agree. but if the political sides had been the other way, there would have been a much longer thread decrying the conservatives...

The notion that Liberals are exempt from stupidity is not new. However, they are not
given to death threats. That's why I keep thinking that this piece of so-called news is
a hoax.

Why would any Liberal want a death threat to Obama? Now, that's stupid.

If there is a Liberal bias on Mudcat, I doubt whether any self-respecting participant
would support a death threat.

I think most Liberals in spite of Obama's waffling and lack of conviction would still
think that it's great that we have an African-American president and would not support
any death threat against him.

I think this thread is a hoax.

If you say anything the least bit forthright these days, and it gets on the media, someone will issue a death threat against you. I, for example, suggested once that Spaw was a layabout, a braggart, and an offence to public order and decency.

I received 13 death threats in the next 24 hours, all by Mudcat PM.

You'll note that I am still here, however. ;-D You can't let little things like death threats ruin your day, and if you do, well then they'll have you right where they want you, won't they?

I've hardly seen any nasty bumper stickers at all lately in Ontario, Canada, Kat. There used to be plenty...both "liberal" and "conservative" in viewpoint. People finally got fed up with them, and they've pretty much gone out of style. I find that a relief, because so many of them are mean-spirited swipes at someone or other...the driver is generally making quite plain his or her own emotional dysfunctionality and chip-on-the-shoulder to the whole world and basically saying "Fuck you if you don't like it!" or "Join me in hating (and laughing at) these despicable people!" Oh, yeah...that really helps! Not.

I'm heartily glad people have mostly stopped using them around here.

I was really impressed with the following which Art Thieme sent me the other day. I don't think he will mind my posting it here:

"Subject:        the way we live now

"This could as well have taken its title from the great Anthony Trollope novel The Way We Live Now. Through it all, my friend Bill Weber, a native of Wisconsin and for years now a resident of South Carolina, manages to be wiser and more hopeful than I have managed to be these days. Let's hope and pray he's right. -- from Jerome Clark to Art Thieme---and on to you...

"I just had the best political discussion with a wing-nut neighbor I think I've ever had.

"I was cleaning out the garage – the thermometer I have hanging on the garage door tops out at 130 - where the arrow was sitting…and didn't budge until about a half an hour ago – and my neighbor walks out and hangs up his yellow, "don't tread on me" teabagger flag – a big one, 4X5, like a 4th of July flag. I love the guy, but he's nuts. He's got a three year old boy who looks exactly like him. They both have fire-engine red hair, and the child is built like one of those small, office refrigerators, except that his head is bigger than his body. It's a great age, if you've ever had a kid. Every time I see him he smiles at me like a drunk. His name is, get this, Cyrus. He's possibly the cutest kid I've ever seen, and I'm saving a little every month so I can pay his bail when he's 18 or so. (No redheaded, redneck kid named Cyrus will last throughout his teenage years without spending a night in the slammer.)

""James, what the hell are you hanging up there? Are you crazy? I just cleaned out my garage and you'll make me throw up all over the nice cement."

"I'm the only Democrat with a MO'BAMA bumper sticker within 1,500 miles of Charleston, so I'm fairly famous in my neighborhood. And since I'm the only one who can read, (I'm guessing), my neighbors are constantly teasing me – in mostly good natured ways – and usually stop to ask me about politics if they see me in the alley.

"My neighbor on the other side is meticulous about the crap in his garage. I accused him of labeling his screw drivers and storing them, (and everything else), in alphabetical order. Since his second kid was born, I've noticed things piling up in a jumble in there. Yesterday, I told him we'd have to have a long talk about 'personal responsibility.' (That's a _great_ joke, and I can't wait to use it over and over again with ALL my neighbors. You can see why I'm so popular.)

"So, James and I sat in the alley in a couple of lawn chairs and drank beer. It must have been seven or eight hundred degrees on the blacktop. I'm at the young edge of the boomers generation. There were 50 kids on my shitty block in my shitty neighborhood. There were also 50 kids on the next block, and the next. We would have rock fights and stage famous American wars with virtually the same numbers of participants. "It's all fun until someone is crying." Someone always went home crying.

"I remember all the neighbors meeting in one of our yards during summer evenings. Someone would have food, and bring those little bottles of cheap soda (Whiterock?) for the kids. My dad and the neighbor's dad would kick the kids out of the two-tube plastic swimming pool, and lie in there together like sardines and smoke cigars - with their legs hanging over the edges, draining the water out on the lawn. Everyone would talk about politics…_all_ the time. Nobody ever agreed, but we got along, and we all knew what the other was thinking.

"Not now. We are isolated and terrified about losing whatever we've managed to accumulate. Our jobs divide us. Multinational corporations abuse us. For the last 30 years or so, it's been all about the money. I used to think teaching was a wonderful profession. I loved the kids. I'd cherish the few moments in a day when I'd seem to make a positive difference. I'd be able to sleep at night knowing that I'd helped some kid have a chance at a job. I believed that some company would hire them, pay them a salary and it would be a mutually beneficial relationship. Not anymore. I work in education for people who don't give a shit about education. They care a lot about control.

"My daughter attends a public high school with 3,400 other kids – a joyless, humorless place that looks and feels like a penitentiary -- where she sits in hot room after hot room and memorizes educational trivia for a standardized exam – and each exam is more important than the last - and none of them improve her. I told her once that the only thing I cared about was that she learned how much fun it is to learn something new. That's the only thing they don't cover at her school.

"The best of my kids…the _very_ best, and only if they are lucky, will be salaried by some horrible corporation that will work them for 15 hour days until they are physically or emotionally unable to continue, whereupon they'll be replaced.

"My neighbor Jeff just lost his house. I saw him a month ago and he told me he'd spent the Winter in his home without power, and now, very sick with diabetes, was going back to his hometown to live with his parents. Jeff is about 35 and was doing very well as a computer techie for a major company. They laid him off. They froze his pension, and then they took his pension. He lost 38% of his 401k, and then had to tap it. He still couldn't afford the mortgage or the electricity. Yes, this is the south, but it got cold here this Winter. Summerville had snow for the first time in a long while. I asked him why he hadn't said anything.

""What are you gonna do, Bill, pay all my bills?" I told him no, but I'd at least run an extension cord out the window, feed him dinner at night and let him use the shower on a daily basis. They didn't cut his natural gas, so he'd cooked in the fireplace where he'd also heated up water to wash with. He can't afford the diabetes medication, so both his feet are now totally numb. I thought he was out of town on a business trip. Nope. He was humiliated and hiding in his own home.

"The repo people came today. They asked if I was the one who had been taking care of his yard. I told them yes, and they asked if I wanted to continue doing it for 50 bucks a month. I considered it, but I have another neighbor who has also lost his job, and he's been trying to make the mortgage by cutting all the lawns in the neighborhood. I gave him their card."

I also think he's lying about the death threats. I can't prove it of course, but has he proven the death threats or just run his mouth? There's this Tea guy that lives on the main road I take to and from work who keeps his yard littered with provocative homemade signs. So many that he once put one out asking for donations to buy more paint. Most are the same old right-wing rhetoric denouncing Obama, Reid and Pelosi, often misspelled and factually incorrect. Sometimes you see a new one sprout with a fresh talking point the day after Beck first made it. Sometimes they are quite offensive, like the one that called for the castration of liberals. I'm pretty certain that this nutcase's greatest hope is that someone try to vandalize his signs or property so he can try to get media attention because his "first amendment rights" have been violated. So far no one has risen to the bait and I hope they don't.

I think he's lying about the death threats, personally. Gets him on the news, 15 minutes of fame and all. Also makes the Dems look bad if he's right. Plenty of reason for him to lie. No evidence that he's telling the truth except his own word.

I want to see one that says "Voted for Republicans for the last 30 years? Embarrassed yet?" except the people that keep voting for those rats don't realize why they should be embarrassed -- they're still brainwashed into thinking it's the right thing to do.

One -- both sides may have their share of nuts, but LIBERALS DON'T RUN THEIR KOOKS FOR HIGH OFFICE! Can't say that about the right-whingers, can you?

Two -- the 'death threats' are attested to by the one person. Did he report them to the police? Did he take them any seriously? Were they specific or generalized (sort of like the ones you see on teagagger signs).

Three -- With the extreme divisions being fostered by the right, and actual physical attacks by their supporters (see examples like the Knoxville church attack, the two who were aiming for the ACLU in LA when stopped by Highway Patrol members -- whom they shot, and that guy who was afraid that 'Obama was going to take his guns,' so he shot two cops), it's not surprising that someone should run his mouth too much. But if he were a Republican, they'd be running him for office right now, and you know it. (See point One).

I dunno...Bruce keeps starting threads which state his frustration that 'we' (the unfair LIBERALS around here) don't see things as clearly as he does or find the **obvious** comparisons in writings or remarks of Democrats to the ones we hear Republicans making.

Ok...I'll state it... yes, sometimes stupid stuff is done by or in the name of, Democrats. Ok?
We just don't often see eye to eye about the frequency or relevance of them. I've been trying for 4-5 years to make the point to BB that it ain't my job to FIND those examples or my obligation to admit that an occasional counter-example does not show a 'trend' of Democratic flaws. I've tried 143 times...(well, close) to say this in a way that will allow us to discuss each issue on its own merits...but.....

You know, I would not put faith in the kind of people who issue death threats, whoever they are. I would hope they are not representative of anybody, so I think it would be foolish to blame either the right or the left for death threats made in their name.

Yup - It's fredom of speech. Pure and simple. It's not an opinion I agree with. But it's silly that he receives death threats over it.
