Subject: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 07 Sep 10 - 11:55 AM Hi, I've heard a song about eggs - I don't know about the song title. I've only heard a few words in the song: "Eggs, it doesn't matter how you cook 'em, eggs... chicken and eggs..." I was even doubting whether this is a real song! Do anybodyhave any idea what this song is? Thanks. Jason from China |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: beeliner Date: 07 Sep 10 - 12:35 PM The song, I think, is titled "Them Eggs" or possibly "Dem Eggs" and the last line is, "They remind me of a chicken and I'd rather have a chicken than eggs." But it's a pretty obscure song, I can't find a google reference to it. Someone here will probably know more. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 08 Sep 10 - 11:25 AM Thanks Beeliner. Got the lyrics according to an odd transcripion and the audio I have. Them Eggs (?) Chicken dinner every Sunday Speghetti on Weednesday night Home from the neighbor's for a late night bite Now, I'm home and hungry And all I got in front of me Is eggs Doesn't matter how you cook them eggs I'd be gladder if someone took them eggs They remind me of a chicken and I'd rather have a chicken than eggs Oh, them eggs Doesn't matter how you cook them eggs I'd be gladder if someone took them eggs They remind me of a chicken and I'd rather have a chicken than eggs Oh, I gotta mind to ramble, I got an egg to scramble I think that those eggs are swell, keep them honkies in their shell Them eggs My heart's breaking for the thing next to bacon Eggs (Here comes a line in which I cannot recognize the words sung) Oh, 'em eggs Doesn't matter how you cook them eggs I'd be gladder if someone took them eggs They remind me of a chicken and I'd rather have a chicken Than eggs |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Sep 10 - 06:48 PM The song seems to be EGGS by Martin Mull. I listened to a sample at Allmusic.com, and I heard these words: It's spaghetti on Wednesday night Off to the neighbor's for that late-night bite Now, I'm home and hungry And all I got in front of me is.... The recording appears on Martin Mull's albums "Martin Mull" (1972); "No Hits, Four Errors: The Best of Martin Mull" (1977); and "Mulling It Over: A Musical Oeuvre-View"* (1998). * Shouldn't that be "Oeuf Revue"? ;) I'm pretty sure that's not Mull singing in the audio file provided by Jason, though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: mayomick Date: 12 Sep 10 - 07:45 PM A bit inappropriate at the moment I thought before seeing the date Jason wrote the lyric request . It certainly seems like a strange sort of a song to me. I hope the music goes some way towards making up for the rather inane lyrics . Or am I missing something -is there something profound in them ? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: Gene Date: 12 Sep 10 - 10:28 PM Martin Mull is the author of several Odd songs... [A Girl Named Johnny Cash] for one... Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: beeliner Date: 13 Sep 10 - 04:19 AM The recording appears on Martin Mull's albums "Martin Mull" (1972); "No Hits, Four Errors: The Best of Martin Mull" (1977); and "Mulling It Over: A Musical Oeuvre-View"* (1998). Just by the 'law of averages', at least one of those albums should give the authorship somewhere, on the disc itself or in the album notes. I doubt that Mull wrote it. It sounds like something Bob Dorough might have written, though I can't find it listed on any of his own albums. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Sep 10 - 08:14 AM Allmusic.com and ASCAP.com both say that Martin Mull wrote EGGS. By the way, did anybody know Martin Mull is also a painter, and has had shows at several galleries and museums? See the article about him at Wikipedia, then go to the heading "Artworks" near the bottom of the page, and click on any of 5 links to various galleries. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 14 Sep 10 - 04:55 AM Yes, the song is inane, nothing profound in it - that is what I think everytime I hear the song. But there might be more about it. It's just some thoughts about food in an ordinary person's mind - the most ordinary, that's the reason why it's the most odd song. It reminds me of the Irish novel Ulysses and the musician John Cage, who composed the strangest pieces of music. As John puts, the real music are non-musical. Maybe the greatest lyrics are not poetic, and are just pieces of somebody's mind. Maybe I've just thought too much about it. But at least it's a funny song! (Sorry for my bad English - It's not my mother tongue) Jason from China |

From: mayomick - PM Date: 12 Sep 10 - 07:45 PM A bit inappropriate at the moment I thought before seeing the date Jason wrote the lyric request ". What am I missing here ? Why did it seem "inappropriate at the moment" in the first place, and what difference does the date of the lyric request make to the appropriateness or otherwise ??? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em... From: mayomick Date: 15 Sep 10 - 09:13 AM There was a horrible shooting incident in America involving a man whose wife had cooked his breakfast eggs the wrong way .It happened just a day after Jason's original post went up . |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs, doesn't matter how you cook 'em From: Jim Dixon Date: 15 Sep 10 - 10:10 AM I missed the egg story too, but it looks like it was widely reported. See the Louisville KY Courier-Journal: Eastern Kentucky rampage kills 6, began as argument over eggs. The perpetrator was Stanley Neace, in case you want to look him up at your customary news source. (That often helps put things in perspective.) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs (Martin Mull) From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 11 Jan 11 - 03:40 AM What a story! Holy moly... Seems that it does matter that how a person cook his eggs, unlike what the song suggests! Jason in China |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs (Martin Mull) From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Jan 11 - 10:08 AM Some people have strong feelings about eggs. For example, I can stand them if their essential nature is disguised, for example, if they're scrambled. But one morning we were visiting a British friend, and I watched as she dipped her toast into a soft-boiled egg. The gooey, oily, yellow liquid oozed out of the egg and dribbled down the side towards the tablecloth. My stomach heaved. I conducted the rest of the meal with my eyes firmly on my plate so as not to see any more egg. And then there's the PG Wodehouse account of the Englishman who approached the breakfast buffet, cried, "Eggs! eggs! damn all eggs!", moved to France and never came back. ============ On a serious note, I am convinced the shootings in Kentucky had far more to do with drugs or alcohol than with eggs. Alcohol is involved in most serious crime. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs (Martin Mull) From: Jim Dixon Date: 15 Jan 11 - 12:15 AM When I was a kid, I would eat scrambled eggs, but they had to be very thoroughly mixed so I couldn't see any white bits. If I could see any white bits, I would pick them out and not eat them. I would also eat hard-boiled eggs, but then I would only eat the white part and not touch the yolk. Go figure. I've gotten over it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs (Martin Mull) From: ClaireBear Date: 15 Jan 11 - 11:21 PM Jason in China, your English is excellent indeed...you even know just how and when to use "Holy moly!" And you have made me smile. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs (Martin Mull) From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 27 Feb 11 - 06:47 AM Aha, thanks for the compliment ClaireBear. I have to say I've made great progress in English over the years. It was four years ago that I still didn't know how to use "please" - rather impolite when posting requests here. I was to apologize profusely for what I've done before, but I just forgot to do that. What a shame! Jason |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eggs (Martin Mull) From: GUEST,Jerry Date: 19 Apr 11 - 07:17 AM Re-re-corrected line: That's all it is, just a nothin' little song 'bout eggs If you want 'inappropriate' try his tune 'Partly Marion' from the same album. It's a scream. In fact most of that record is perfect, timeless humor in my opinion. Not about gut-bucket laughs, about humor. I smile through every song on the record from start to finish every time I listen to it, and have for the past forty-odd years. Jerry |
