Subject: BS: Obit: Our Ol' Friend: Mr. Clifford...
From: Bobert
Date: 08 Sep 10 - 08:32 PM

Well, over the last 5 years I've talked about Mr. Clifford in some of my postings...

He was the first person we really got to know whne we moved here from Wes Ginny and he has been a good friend to both me and the P-Vine...

He had a stroke in December and has been in a nursing home ever since... He passed away Monday...

We'll sho nuff miss the ol' goat... Yeah, goat... Knew everything in the world... Always sermonizin' about this or that...

Gonna miss that ol' goat...

Sorry for yer loss, Bobert. They seem to be reeling and falling in all directions. Maybe it's the flavor of Autumn coming up...

Think of it this way, Bobert: now you can argue with him anytime you like.

And if anybody thinks you're nuts, just smile and say, "Bluetooth" as you point to your ear.

Tell us a little bit about him. How did you meet, and what is the first thing he said to you that got your attention. Something that made you realize this "old goat" was worth listening to.

Those kinds of stories are good ones. Kind of a virtual eulogy.

We hadn't moved in yet and were on our way down with yet another trailer load of plants and we'd seen this sign "Danny's Farm Market" and so we stopped in to see what he had to sell... Mr. Clifford was working for Danny and so we started talkin' and next thing ya' know he finds out which farm we had bought and then found out that the guy's farm we had bought had died and that Mr. Clifford was one of his best friends... And Mr. Clifford knew everything about the farm... Like where the well was... Where undergrounb wires and water pipe were...

Next thing ya' know we back with another load of plants and there's Mr. Clifford with his weedeater weedeatin' around the house... And then seems that as we went about cleaning and de-trashin' what was a nasty hog farm and putting in plants and renovating the house that Mr. Clifford was there every day as "The Supervisor"... Didn't make much difference who was up here or what they were doing everything was done under the watchfull eye of "The Supervisor"... We even called him that...

Now Mr. Clifford was born up on top of the mountain and his peoples were put off the mountain during the 30s when the CCC was putting in "Skyline Drive" (Shenandoah National Park) and folks were literally picked up. stil in their rocking chairs and relocated to "Pine Grove Holler" (where we and Mr. Clifford live/d) and that stuff kinda turned them all against the government in general... That was Mr. Clifford...

BTW, his family's cemetary is one of them that ya' kinda have to walk thru some woods to get to and it's up there in the Park and that's where he'll be laid to rest tomorrow mornin' in a simple grave-side service...

Sniff...

What I like is the respect you have for him.

It shines through.

I bet he felt it too.

Thanks... He was an ol' coot but, sniff, yeah, I respected the guy...

BTW, here in rural Virginia, once ya' get to a certain age you are known as Mr. (first name)... Mr. Clifford's real name is/was Clifford Breeden...

"Clifford Maxwell Breeden, 75, of Stanley, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010. The Rev. Don Sherfey will conduct a graveside ..."

It jumps to Obituaries and then says 'No obituaries at this time.'. I'll never understand computers.

Yeah, ol' Cliffy was somethin' else... Grew a monster veggie garden and sold stuff to folks fir like 50s prices... Pound of pole beans??? How about a quarter???

Kinda sad how thing went down there... I mean, the stroke in Decemeber and then straight to the nursing home and he kinda just had enough livin' and didn't want to to go on with the limitations that the stroke imposed on him... Rev Sherfy tried and we tried to get his spirits turned around but he had kinda made up his mind and one thing about Mr. Clifford is that when his mind was amde up it...

...was made the heck up... Stubborn ol' goat... Used to drive me crazy sometimes but...

...sniff... I'll miss the ol' goat!!!
