Subject: BS: Medical research at any cost? From: gnu Date: 01 Oct 10 - 04:53 PM Sickening. By Lauran Neergaard, The Associated Press WASHINGTON - American scientists deliberately infected prisoners and patients in a mental hospital in Guatemala with syphilis 60 years ago, a recently unearthed experiment that prompted U.S. officials to apologize Friday and declare outrage over "such reprehensible research." The article cites other such reasearch. |

Subject: RE: BS: Medical research at any cost? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 Oct 10 - 05:43 PM Unfortunately not an isolated occurrence. In the early days of vaccines, there was use on humans of material whose effects were unknown. Perhaps the best known recent case was the use of Nigerian children by Pfitzer to test meningitis drugs. In Israel, it is alleged that drinks with uranium were given to employees at a nuclear research station. An often cited example was the testing of mustard gas on skins of Indian Army troops. The U. S. experimented with several drugs at Camp Dettrick; the patients were informed, but results were sometimes more serious than expected. Small scale experimentation on inmates of mental hospitals, U. S. and England. |

Subject: RE: BS: Medical research at any cost? From: Jack Campin Date: 01 Oct 10 - 07:25 PM A much larger-scale and nastier piece of American/Israeli human experimentation can be found by googling "ringworm children" (huge numbers of Sephardi immigrant kids got their heads irradiated to see what would would happen, many getting lifelong disability from brain damage). |

Subject: RE: BS: Medical research at any cost? From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 01 Oct 10 - 11:28 PM From the 'For What its Worth Department'....Back in the 60's it was widely reported, that the CIA, with the DOD, filtered 'Sunshine Acid' through 'The Brotherhood' in Newport Beach, Orange County, California, to test 'STP', which 'Sunshine Acid' was laced with, for chemical and psychological warfare. In saying that, I want to re-iterate, that it was WIDELY reported, at the time, and accepted as fact. I have talked to some people, since, who were with that group, and in casual conversation, seemed to acknowledge that, that was the case. Keep in mind, that 'Hippies' were fair game for disrespect, and seen as hostile, to the administrations, at that time. STP, was also reported, to have been developed by the DOD. GfS |

Subject: RE: BS: Medical research at any cost? From: GUEST,mauvepink Date: 02 Oct 10 - 07:03 AM Alas, psychology is full of experiments in the past that would now not be deemed ethical in the least. But nothing on the kind of scale as above. Sometimes the costs can be too high for the benefits. mp |
