Neither Canada nor Alaska got what they could have wished for out of the boundary disputes.
Alaskans bitterly resent the need to go through a foreign country to get from one part of Alaska to another part of Alaska. Skagway is just 15 miles from the Canada border- if you have a criminal record they won't let you through and if you are carrying firearms in your vehicle you can't go through and for such a hunting land as Alaska is that is a pain.

I met a couple of men in Juneau who had taken the state ferry up the coast to Juneau, where they became stalled. One of the men had a criminal record and knew he couldn't go with his friend through Canada; he didn't have the money to fly to Anchorage so they were waiting for the ferry that travels through the Gulf of Alaska- which it did every two weeks.

As for the Malaspina/Ketchikan hostage taking incident, Canada got off lightly on that one. When it comes down to it, those fisherman engaged in an act of war.

So I go salmon fishing with my buddie Red , this was back in the 70's.   Red casts his lure in the river loaded with salmon .. it was a pretty large river and had fishermen on both sides. One of Red's cast landed all the way on the other side of the river and snaged on the bank . I didn't know this until I came walking down and heard Red cussin out this guy and chucking rocks at him. I guess when he got his lure stuck he asked the guy for a little help. The guy said, sure and took out his nail clippers sniped off Red's lure and stuck it in his own pocket ... Red was so pissed LOL

It was windy. I couldn't chuck a fly very well. But, I was between Tom and Ted at Grey Rapids, Main Sou'west Miramichi, both famous fly fishermen. They were whippin out line and I tried my best.

At one point, I could here the gust of wind in the trees upstream... I knew it was comin... but I needed one more cast to get a respectable cast and I went for it. I lost. The last 15 feet wrapped around my head at a million miles an hour and the fly smacked me in the forehead so hard it left a mark. Me buddies joked they could tell it was a Green Machine fly.

Tom said, "Good thing that didn't hit you in the eye."

Ted said, "I used to wear my ballcap low when I did something that fucking stupid."

Yeah, Ted was, ahhh, "blunt and to the point". He could cast a fly better than he could bat. A joy to watch. Fact is, when he was on that pool, many peeps would stop fishing and just watch. He owned the land across the river shown in my member's photo of me casting on that pool.

A woman goes into Wal-Mart to buy a rod and reel to go salmon fishing. She doesn't know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the register. There is a Wal- Mart "associate" standing there with dark shades on. She says, "Excuse me sir...can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?" He says, "Ma'am I'm blind but if you will drop it on the counter I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound that it makes." She didn't believe him, but dropped it on the counter anyway. He said, "That's a 6' graphite rod with a Zebco 202 reel and 10 lb. test line...It's a good all around rod and reel and it's $20.00". She says, "That's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I think it's what I'm looking for so I'll take it."

He walks behind the counter to the register, and in the meantime the woman breaks wind big-time. At first she is embarrassed but then realizes that there is no way he could tell it was her...being blind he wouldn't know that she was the only person around. He rings up the sale and says, "That will be $25.50."
She says, "But didn't you say it was $20.00?"
He says, "Yes ma'am, the rod and reel is $20.00, the duck call is $3.00, and the catfish stink bait is $2.50."

There's been some research on the quantity and value of salmon nutrients to the surrounding northwest forest from bits dropped by animals before and after eating. :-)

That's true--one way the dead fish serve the cycle is that during spring thaw the nutrients from sunken, rotted carcasses may get scraped off creek bottoms along with silt etc. by ice chunks and then sluiced over nearby low lands. I found it to be most impressive and frightening to watch over a few days, usually late in March in the creeks around here. Once humans build a dam to control flooding, this nutrient replacement system vanishes completely.

Any salmon that aren't caught on their way 'home' or that are not collected by eagles, bears, ravens and seagulls in the stream will die in the same water in which they spawned - and in which they themselves were spawned some years before. You'll see salmon bodies littering the banks of the rivers or crumpled behind boulders or rotting where they were dropped by the replete bears. It is not in any sense a waste because the elements are released into the water and will feed the fry in time to come.

That answers a lot, olddude...I think they probably snag the salmon with a net when they're jumping the shallow parts (4"-6" deep in places) but I couldn't say what's legal or when, I haven't fished since I was a kid going with my dad. Certainly people fish for trout but I don't know the season.

I wonder if this year the salmon run doesn't mesh with the usual trout dates, because I haven't seen fishermen yet, just salmon jumping their way upstream.

My dad's dead now but his best friend loves fishing as much as you do I think!

Not a typical practice to leave them at all, depends on how long they are in the creek, if they are there for more than a day or so they just won't eat so you can't catch them cause they won't bite. Some guys snag them and that is legal in some places but not in my county. The salmon are followed up by the big rainbow trout, they come up to feed on the roe ... so what happens is you get a mix, I normally will get salmon and then several huge rainbow trout on a streamer fly or lure. Depends if I use my fly rod or spinning outfit. In any case I always keep the roe for bait for other fish. Yup it is the best bait for trout in the spring you can get ... We make what is called egg sacks. You preserve the roe in borax, scoop some in some cheese cloth and tie it into a small fingernail size bait. works great. Every bait shop sells it but it is very expensive so fisherman make their own. I have a friend that makes caviaer (sp) out of salmon eggs. yuk not for me . For salmon only the best place is right at the mouth of the creek, they will bite and they are fresh. In the creek they will bite for a day then just go on with their business of making baby fish .

Yup they're running up Duffins Creek from Lake Ontario too, usually lasts about 2 weeks. I wouldn't eat them though, they're pretty well spent, better to stick to taking pictures. Someone told me that folks who fish that creek use salmon roe as bait for other fish (I dunno, bass or trout maybe?) and leave the rest to rot on the shore--is that typical practice?

Tomorrow the fish will get wrapped and frozen so they're ready for the kids are here for a visit. They are both away at school right now, but will be back over the holidays, and they love smoked salmon (this was the more affordable coho, at $10 a pound at the local high-end market. I can't afford to smoke the $35 a pound King salmon. . . )

Since I haven't seen one in Juneau, I went looking online, Bill D, and found this:

" In SE Alaska, Juneau to be precise, I've seen the rotted remains of several less than 20 year old geodesic dome houses. They handled the rain (80+ inches/yr) OK, but the real problems occurred from the inside out - ventilation problems are inherent in the design. Cool to look at and an interesting concept, but I think perhaps fatally flawed in execution. I'd spend some serious time researching and finding people who have owned them and talking with them about maintenance."

Not too hopeful, eh.

I was at da Couglhan Pool at da Grey Rapid on da Main Sou'west Miramichi an I ad me a Green Machine on. Is good but I fish all day but nutting eh? I try lots of udder flies too. So, juzz when da sun was at da treetop I say BROWN BOMBER icit la. I am tying da Bomber on an da airs stand up on my neck like dat la. I tink someone is looking at me. You know dat when you get dat eh? I look in da shadow behind da big rock and ees staring at me an ees a size eh?. I act, ow you say en Anglise, not chalent. Not at all me.

So, I trow da Brown one out wit a roll cast juzzzz de udder side da rock an ees float bye easy an I drag da curl and up ees come for da roll. Again I feel da airs and I see im out da corner my eye. I wonner ees fuckin wit me eh? I do it again tree time and same ting.

So, I take a real big suck on da Morgan and I spit on dat fly. I roll again an ees go for it. I wait to set but out da water ees come right at me so da line is slack an ees spit da fly at me.

Tree time ee does dat. So, I tink I got a plan. I soak da Bomber in da rum and old it over da back of da rock. Ees come up and sees a drop drip off da fly and makes da jump for it and ees on! What a scrap dat!! Ees up an down da pool and out and in an down and back again. Took me a hower to bring dat fish.

I was gentle me. Ees was tired. I could feel da fish wit da shakes eh? I got da hook out and held him by da tail, stroking him to calm im an make sure ees okay before I ook and let go. When I feel da fish is good to go, I take da Morgan and give him a good sip.

I catch dat fish every weekend all summer.

So, now, me, I never use da dry fly eh?

Seen a lad hook a fourty pounder behind the dorsal fin. I was aghast when he reached waaaay back in the back of his vest, tie it on and throw it. But, as he was my host and it was hix Argo that had brought us 30km back....

That salmon jumped about two dozen times until I said I had seen enough and wanted to get back to fishing. Buddy snapped the leader. I was a tad pissed off. Oh, I should mention... it is illegal to keep a salmon that size so he was only doing it for amusement.

The lad also had a leaded truncheon. He caught the one we dashed home with, measured it, proceeded to beat the nose off it, and measured it again, announcing with a big smile, "Now it's legal."

Well, you get the pic... I wish I could remember the rest (or even exactly how it went as the scanning above ain't worth a) or at least where the hell it is. I know it's within 40 feet of me because this house isn't that big.

Best salmon I ever had was in NF, boiled with a salt beef dinner. I was in charge of holding the tag (through the gills) until it was in the kitchen. >;-)
