The police have the best person info resources, but what are the best such sites for civilians?

data should include criminal records, employer, education and the like.

I am leary of google searches who merely list the folks who paid the most to head up the list.

Lexus Nexus?

You see I am doing research on how and who is making unsubstantiated State Tax accusations.

ZabaSearch is good for finding people. Beware: the information is sometimes out of date (although accurate at the time it was collected).

For famous and semi-famous people, Wikipedia is a good source.

my problem has the ear marks of bank fraud so it would be good to know the people involved if it is ever to stop.

A few years ago, there were several sites where one could find public information about people by putting in name, or address, or phone number. So far as I've found, ALL OF THEM have been taken over by commercial operators. They will tell you that you can make a free search. The free search will give you a list of people with "similar names" that they will say they have information on. They will offer to sell you the information.

If you pay them for "the information" you often will get the information that "a person with that name exists" ... i.e. the same result as for the "free search," but little else. Occasionally they may actually have something of interest, but the fee's the same regardless.

One, of many such, that is likely to give you links to some others of similar ilk, is at 123people, if you want to look. (If you put in a random name, the "result" page usually will have sidebar links - ads - to lots of other "searchers.") I'm unimpressed with what any of them currently offer.

If you have a real problem with what you believe is "fraudulent claims," you're more likely to get helpful information from:

1. local police
2. state attorney general's fraud office
3. federal trade commission
4. FCC

Google your location + fraud or something similar.

John

Yes I had the same unimpressed experience.
Suggestions 1-4 are good. While I do not question their integrity overall, I am suspect of their diligence.
