Subject: Obit: They've closed the book on Danno From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Oct 10 - 11:46 PM "Hawaii Five-O" co-star James MacArthur died Thursday at age 72. The long-running TV series is known for a catchphrase directed at MacArthur's character, Danno. More: MacArthur acted in other arenas, including film. He was the adopted son of a writer and a revered actress. A revamped version of the TV series debuted this fall (video). |

Subject: RE: Obit: They've closed the book on Danno From: Stilly River Sage Date: 29 Oct 10 - 12:56 AM Should maybe add this to the famous (or not so famous) actor died. James MacArthur was the adopted son of Helen Hayes and Charles MacArthur, a well-known playwright. He was one of those TV crushes of my youth. Loved him in the Disney Swiss Family Robinson film (also one that was better in my youth) SRS |

Subject: RE: Obit: They've closed the book on Danno From: Janie Date: 29 Oct 10 - 01:11 AM Yeh, Stilly, He and Michael Landon as Little Joe were my two big Junior High TV crushes. Hawaii Five-O did not make it's debut until after I had pretty much stopped watching television. I can't recall if I perhaps caught an episode or two while visiting parents or not. I knew he was the son of Helen Hayes, but not that he was adopted. I did catch him in the occasional movie over the years. He was a talented actor. RIP |

Subject: RE: Obit: They've closed the book on Danno From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Oct 10 - 04:17 AM Hmmm. He's in one of my songs...the "Book 'em, Dan'o!" phrase. I'll always remember that and the rousing theme music for "Hawaii Five-O". |

Subject: RE: Obit: They've closed the book on Danno From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 29 Oct 10 - 09:07 PM The new "Hawaii Five-O" lacks the Hawaiian "feel" of the old series. I have watched a couple, but they have made me wish for the old series. Sorry to hear of MacArthur's passing. (Jack Lord died over ten years ago. A fine artist as well as actor.) |

Subject: RE: Obit: They've closed the book on Danno From: katlaughing Date: 29 Oct 10 - 09:11 PM My very first memory of him was in Third Man on the Mountain, too. Can't tell you anything about the movie, but I liked watching him and looked for him in other stuff. We really enjoyed Hawaii Five Oh. Sad he's gone so young. |

Subject: RE: Obit: They've closed the book on Danno From: Ed T Date: 29 Oct 10 - 09:58 PM Could never figure out how he squeeled his car tires on grass and beach sand. I tried to reproduce it as a youth. It never worked out for me. I also recall Zulu and Chin Ho. |
