Subject: RE: BBC London Folk Song Cellar From: GUEST Date: 29 Oct 10 - 08:16 AM BBC Radio's London Folk Song Cellar - compered by Scottish folk duo Robin Hall & Jimmie Macgregor * - dates from the mid-1960s. This now largely unknown radio series was produced by the BBC World Service and distributed worldwide on acetate discs by the Transcription Service of the BBC. These latter disks are now long gone - usually junked for lack of storage - but were mainly distributed to overseas broadcasting corporations for late night transmission aimed at British ex-patriots. The series was also transmitted on shortwave. Most of these recordings were RadioRipped direct from the BBC World Service on shortwave (hence the poorish quality). They are over 45 years old. The actual dates of transmission are also long forgotten. * For Robin Hall & Jimmie Macgregor see: http://www.theballadeers.com/scots/hm_01.htm These 30 min. programmes recorded in London emulated the ambience and sounds of the folk clubs of the 1960s that were predominant at the start of the British folk song, music and dance revival of that period. The performers included such pioneering luminaries as the Young Tradition, the Dubliners, Cyril Tawney, Sandy Denny, the High Level Ranters, and a host of others from those times. The recordings uploaded here were RadioRipped onto reel-reel 1/4" tape and have now been passed onto a collector, before that though they were transcribed onto cassette tape, these were then in turn digitised to MP3. It is thought that it is best to present these latter recordings just as they are (or were) on the cassette tapes. These recordings are quite unique and probably do not exist elsewhere. If anyone wishes to try and reconstruct the original 30 min. programmes then if the original lists of performances can be found in the BBC archives then Audacity could do that. And if anyone knows where other copies of the BBC London Folk Song Cellar exist please do let us know. Mitch says he must do something about them - one day. We learnt many of the songs we sang back then from the programmes that were played around midnight on a Saturday night, in 68 and 69. Paul Metsers was in that flat in Wellington, NZ then too. Happy days, fond memories and lots of good material that wasn't otherwise available in this part of the world. That's when I first heard the Northumbrian pipes - played by Colin Ross and Forster Charlton, and it took me 4 years before I managed to find a set for myself. Ray Fisher sang on that programme too - 'The Lum hat wantin' a croon' if I remember correctly. Also Charlie Bate singing the Padstow May song and the Sweet Nightingale. It's a treasure trove if you can find them. Robyn |

It might be worth emailing such as the NZBC Archives or the Australian equiv., or Canada or South Africa. If the year for Sandy Denny is 1967 then Folk Song Cellar would appear to be the progs. to look out for. I wonder if the folks in NZ have them, NZBC was quite prolific at transmitting Brit. progs. I have a number of Ronnie Barker progs., Navy Lark, Men from the Ministry, etc, incl. the Goon Show that I recorded whilst in NZ in the 1970s? I have uploaded to TheBox.bz all the FSC's that I have access to. But other folks have other recordings I don't. I'm not sure how to proceed with this project. At least one person I know has a large collection of recordings but I haven't yet managed to persuade him/her to let me have any copies. Subject: RE: BBC London Folk Song Cellar From: GUEST Date: 02 Nov 10 - 12:38 PM The CJB files came from my own recordings from the NZBC National Programme (equiv. to the BBC Light Prog.) captured to reel-reel tape at 2.00 am on Mondays in Hawera, Taranaki, NZ. I would then be teaching the next day. Why was teach. so tired every Tuesday morning? Now they know. But homesickness - i.e. being thousands of miles from home (UK) - meant that I'd (we'd) do anything to keep in touch with the Brit. folk scene. The other recordings 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 are courtesy of Ross McLennan who probably recorded the same programmes for the same reason(s) in Hamilton, NZ. He copied these to cassette and then sent them to me in the UK last year. These have been digitised. Ross's original reel-reel tapes went to 'Little Robyn' and Mitch. But I believe that Robyn and Mitch (in NZ) also have their own recordings. There is one other large collection of reel-reel tapes in Christchurch, but ... Anyway now that I have uploaded my recordings I am sure it would be great if others could also do the same. Of course reel-reel tapes do not last forever - they suffer from tape rot (the adhesive crystallises), they also develop drop outs, and 'print through' can be a serious problem, etc. These treasure troves need rescuing fast!!! My next task is 100 hours of Folkweave from the 1970s - apparently all junked by the BBC. |

As far as I can remember, back in the mid 60s, 'The Halliard' made two recordings for the BBC. One was for 'Cellar full of Folk', which I think was recorded in the old 'Paris Studio' in London, Piccadilly...producer, almost certainly, Frances Line (sp?). The other was a programme called 'Country Meets Folk', which was recorded at Broadcasting House. I seem to recall we shared the programme with John D. Loudermilk. The only song title I can remember from the sessions is: 'The Lancashire Lads' ('Country Meets Folk'). We've always been under the impression that these recordings, along with many others, we're wiped years ago. Whilst there may be some in the BBC Archives - these will most likely have been thrown out by the BBC long ago, and any chance surviving copies have to remain in private hands even if they are deemed to be a treasure trove. My own projects with restoring recordings of surviving versions of Folk Song Cellar and Folkweave and Folk on Two and Country Meets Folk have been brought to a grinding halt. And due to the vociferous comments from some self-appointed steward of the folk scene I am now seriously considering junking the whole lot of my thousands of hours of tapes just as the BBC has done. |

These ae maily from home-taped off-air recordings to reel-reel tapes. We have also bought original t'disks for nos. 1 to 13. These are likely the ones offered here many years' ago. All are digitised. Question now is how put these into the public domain. They are excellent survivals from the 1960s revival. |
