Subject: BS: Question A is getting Boring
From: Sawzaw

This is only pertinent to a certain part of Maryland where there is something on the Ballot called Question A.

It is not a Democrat/Republican thing.

It is a referendum on whether to allow a slots casino to be built near a major mall.

I think most people want it to be built at the nearby horse racing track but "somebody" made the requirement that they have put up $28 million or it could not go there. Not everybody has $28 mil in their pocket. I smell a rat. A big fat real estate developer rat.

My phone is ringing off the hook with messages to vote for or to vote against question A.

I get 4 pieces of mail every day saying to vote for or against question A. There are signs on the school buses even.

25% of the TV ads are for or against question A.

Fire fighters, teachers, police, the governor, comptrollers, newspapers, all manners of orgs have lined up for or against Question A.

Enough already. I have never seen as much lying and bullshit counter claims in my whole entire life like I have seen over question A in the last few months.

I am voting against question A. It if can't be at the racetrack, like the one in Charles Town WV and Dover Downs Del. I don't want it at all. It will bring in as much revenue and produce just as many lobs at the track without polluting the surrounding area with sleaze.

They can build them at all the horse tracks too and save the faltering horse racing industry here in Maryland.

Signs on school buses? Isn't there some kind of law which prevents that? I'd be really irate if my kids' buses had signs for anything except safety and school ino...NOTHING political!

The school buses are privately owned and leased.

Still, you'd think they would be off limits. If I were a parent there I'd raise a ruckus about it.

Notice they popped up at the last minute?

And the Schools are supposedly for it because they always get gambling through by saying it will fund education.

So they pass The Lottery and Keno and scratchoffs and there is still never enough money for education. Always gotta cut and cut.

I have never bought a lottery ticket or a scratchoff or played Keno in my life. I have put a few bucks in the slots here and there but some people come with buckets of coins.

They will still get as much revenue for education from the racetrack.

Maybe they are thinking it will draw better being near a Mall but if they built them at all 3 tracks it should draw even more.

Pimlico, part of the Triple Crown is closing, Sad. Horses were a large pert of Maryland tradition, Casinos or Racinos would be a savior.

I'm sorry, I thought this thread was about Question A - the question of whether or not to have an ambulance fee in Montgomery County MD.

Today's the day!

Don

I just had the ambulance fee thing explained.. (the League of Women Voters support it)
It is the volunteer firefighters who are against it, as they have their own 'fund drives' which are for much more than supporting firefighting. It also funds their own banquets and such...and the recently bought a $150,000 hook&ladder truck for the Kensington station which, I was told, will never be used except in parades...because the fire dispatchers will not dispatch it. there are already enough of those trucks in local firehouses.
The volunteers got some kind of grant to buy it, against advice, but bought it anyway because they could.

The Question A thing is to allow recovery of ambulance fees from those able to afford it thru their insurance companies to help the general county revenue problems.
The League of Women Voters says that you will NOT receive a bill after riding in an ambulance.

I tend to trust them rather than a sub-group of (volunteer) firefighters looking after their own interests.

It seems like such a fee would discourage frivolous ambulance calls.

'Maybe' in the long haul...but people tend to call for help on impulse, whether needed or not.

Some people believe or have been fooled into thinking taht if they vote against Question A, there will be no slots anywhere.

That is not the case, Several groups like the Jockey club and even the current Democratic governor are against question A.

Even the fat cat developer has finally admitted that the mall is not the option.

I am voting against Question A and for O'malley because he is against question A and his oponent, Erlich is for question A and has actually ben involved in promoting it for financial gain.

Also I am voting for Franchot who is against question A

The state of New York right now I think is the gambling capital of the world. For God sakes every time I turn around someone puts up another "Native American Casino" backed and pushed by the state but if you look at how poor the people on the reservation live I question where the money goes. Every 5 minutes on the TV it is the latest and greatest state lotto game or scratch off.   Maybe these politicians should think about things like "manufacturing jobs again" get people back to work instead of relying on gambling. I submit the jobs the casino's bring in is far less than the damage they create to a family ... But what do I know ... Next the state should invest in alcohol and prostitutes .. why not ... or get into the drug game ... there is a money maker for them.

Well, I'm gonna mark this down as a time when we agree on something! (and I already voted)

Agreements are much better than disagreements I say.

Question A won with 55% of the vote.

The Governor and the Comptroller I voted for were against Question A and won so I suppose that will have an effect on the final location for the slots.

There are 4 horse tracks in Maryland headed for disaster.

Having the slots there would bail them out, preserve those jobs, create new jobs, produce new revenue and prevent money from flowing out of the state into the race track/casinos, Racinos in Delaware and WV.
