Mixed reviews.
The Canadian Jeep owners site says save your money.

Caution- it must be installed by CTC for the perforation warranty to apply. They seem to have ways of wiggling out of warranties.

Calgary uses salt liberally on its roads. Frequent car-wash visits seem to be the best protection- be sure and select a car wash that power sprays the underside of the vehicle.

I get Rustcheck every year. A buddy of mine had a 12 year old woods and winter buggy... perfect shape. My old truck was perfectexcept where the Kent County red mud stuck inside the lower rear quarter panels... no warranty because I did nor start the Rustcheck until after the vehicle was three years old.

Thanks Ed (and Q). I understand cathodic protection of ships as I used to work for a marine company. This "electronic" stuff just seemed like hooey to me from the start. But, as I had not read up on it, I figured it would be good to enlist help here at the Café.

The five year warranty on a vehicle less than five years old certainly is sommat to "do the math on". Seems like a money making scam to me unless there is evidence otherwise, but I just don't understand how it could actually work. And the website doesn't explain it.

BTW... IF it did work, I would think they would be able to cite endorsements from seaports who would have used it to protect piling in the tidal zone, or by pipeline companies, or by bridge design engineers, etcetera, rather than using bitumious (and the like) coatings and wraps.

Gnu can tell us about cathodic protection on ships- but doesn't that only work with the hull?
I understand that scrape and paint is still necessary.

Read in a Tom Clancy book (Without Remorse) that the cathodic protection is for the propeller which was--I think--some combo of zinc and copper. If the electric thingy isn`t kept batterized, the metal becomes very fragile (brittle) and can break if it hits sand.

That said, just drive your car into a pond, let it soak for a while and drive the vehicle out. It works better with a boat, but in a pinch . . . .

999... yes, propellers, shafts, bearings, etcetera are made of bronze so they don't rust.

Wasn't rust-protection the reason that manufacturers flirted with positive-earth systems back in the 60s? Or was was rust promotion the reason that they dropped it? John in Kansas will probably know.
If so, then there may be something in it.
