Let's hope she is allowed to remain free this time.

And that she is able to determine the fate of all those Burmese monks who went 'missing' back in 2007, and who've not been seen or mentioned since...

Glad as I am to see her out, I can hardly see this as anything more than a PR exercise by the generals. They have just stage a bent election, which, surprise, surprise entrenched their power. I suspect it will not be long before Aung San Suu Kyi is either in exile or back under lock and key. The generals have no intention of relinquishing power and nobody with a grain of sense wants to see hundreds - if not thousands - of innocent people losing their lives in a futile attempt to wrest it from them. Aung is playing a long game, but I fear it will not be over any time soon.

Just to repeat here what I posted on Lizzie's other, above-line, thread about her appeal for a freedom song: if ever asked in an interview or survey or such whom I regarded as the greatest person in the world, I should unhesitatingly say 'Aung San Soo Kyi!'

I remember reading an article about her by her former tutor at Oxford. She commented on Aung's remarkable serenity and good manners. For all that I fear for her safety, she is one of the people who I most look up to. In the end her cause will prevail although she may not live to see it. That is unlikely to deter her one bit as she is obviously an unselfish person.

Aung is one of the truly good looking clean thinking and eloquently self-expressing persons of the world.

But the power is in bad hands, evil hands. Hands that don't give a fig for democracy or the people.

News reports usually erroneously report the name of her country. The correct name is "Burma." If you want to add an "aka," then it is "Burma, also known by the military dictatorship currently in power as Myanmar."

I wrote a politely-worded letter on her behalf a few years ago and then again last year. This is wonderful news. The letter by itself didn`t help, but maybe lotsa letters did.

You'll note that the BBC prefers to call the country Burma. So does the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, and so far as I am aware, the rest of the British press.

Stifled a tear when i watched the report.

We could do with someone like her over here in the UK - a clear case of a strong sense of responsibility and compassion overriding any thought of personal gain.

20 years of incarceration without bending, but if anything becoming stronger and more powerful is testament to her integrity.




On the subject of Burma, I should like to inappropriately quote Spike Milligan:

She's already compromising, talking in terms meant to avoid insulting those generals. It doesn't augur well at all. I'm afraid I share alanabit's measured pessimism (if that's what it is). You're a hero when you do things, not just for being incarcerated.
