Subject: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 23 Nov 10 - 08:55 PM What chess "programs" do you like? I have not played chess for a number of years. My chess board still sits on the dining room table in play but inert since my best childhood friend shot himself. We played over the years by letter, phone and then email thousands of miles away from each other. When he killed himself, I stopped playing. Never played since except for a few drunken nights when I tried "Titans" in my MS games. It kinda sucks. Fuckin prick made it worse than a stalemate... when I get to heaven I am gonna kick his ass for that. Or, better yet, take his queen, bishops, rooks, and one knight and then run his ass around the squares in agony... heaven my ass. I miss him. Dunno if I could ever play another human gain, So, what computer chess is cool? |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Nov 10 - 10:37 PM Computer chess will keep your mind alert but my mother at the age of 93 has been playing with a teenaged neighbor for the past few years as well, and it works well for her. She used to play chess with father but never took the game seriously until he retired. Then she worked her game up and when she first won a game he couldn't believe it. He soon learned that her win was not a fluke, and he certainly took her a whole lot seriously as a player after that. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Nov 10 - 11:51 PM I miss playing chess. Used to play a lot in high school and college. Haven't had anyone around who plays it. My son was learning, but we never followed through. Like gnu, my board is out on a table in the living room. Ignored. Maybe I'll set it up this week and see if anyone notices over the holiday. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:07 AM Rapparee: "What's wrong with being quick and merciful?" Because you were also predictable...so it might not be so 'quick'..in fact, while you are 'plotting' a 'secret strategy'...that isn't a secret,....somebody is allowing you to be deluded, till they come up out of no where, and whoop your ass! Good guess, wasn't it? Maybe we should play....... ...but no crying.... GfS |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 24 Nov 10 - 12:59 PM I used to play lots. I haven`t been involved with the game for decades--well, since about the time I saw somewhere that the system of recording moves had changed. Now, I`m lost. Anyway, just for the helluvit, I`ll play black to Rapparee`s white and respond P to Q4. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:43 PM I know. Hell, it`s been so long since I`ve played a game I will only be able to carry the first five or six moves in my head. Then I`m gonna require a board with the pieces set up. I hope it`ll be OK if I look through Uncle Bobby`s old notes as we play. (He passed away a few years ago in Iceland.) |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 24 Nov 10 - 01:46 PM That's not cheating. Studying strategies is not cheating. Cheating is when you have a heavy duty software package that you can use to analyse the game. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 24 Nov 10 - 07:29 PM I haven't played for ages. A lack of willing opponents, mainly - I'm not all that good, just average, but found a distinct lack of enthusiasm on the part of others when I discovered that I could play any number of opponents simultaneously, but not in my head, and no better than I could do one game at a time .... Also what probably intimidated them was the fact that I could only do this trick for 'speed chess' - if I tried to actually consciously 'think' about the moves, I did even worse... One Junior State Champion could easily beat me, but was too terrified to even try to play me 2 games at once, he admitted. Could only focus his intelligence in one way, he admitted. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Donuel Date: 24 Nov 10 - 07:37 PM Tragic associations can make sll sorts of problems like chess and the suicidal friend association making playing chess a bad association. One way to break it is redefine what your friend did with you other than chess. For example he used to swear, but that does not mean you will never swear again. Of course it could be anything. He used to fart but that does not mean... |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: ollaimh Date: 29 Nov 10 - 08:44 PM again i spent the better part of a day playing that program at speed rates. very fun but it will hurt you if you play ta\ctics first--as i like to-- i played many kings gambits and won a few but mostly it punished me. it was weaker at queen side openings and at other positional openings but that was boring, i can't believe how strong chess program have gotten over the last two decades. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 30 Nov 10 - 03:54 AM My Dad would always start his game with anyone by *giving* them his Queen. He'd then go on to beat every single person he ever played. He'd be at least 4 or 5 moves ahead of his opponent, able to work out which move they'd make. It used to drive me bats playing with him sometimes, because he'd take so long to make a move, but now I realise he was going through every available move either side could or would make and deciding the best option. Never saw him beaten by anyone. For Bruce and Gnu :0) |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Slag Date: 06 Dec 10 - 07:33 PM I remember the story of the amazing Dr. Alekine who was not exactly known in the sporting world for his cheery attitude and sportsmanship, and who, when he lost a game to a duffer, picked up his fallen king, upset the chessboard and hurled the king into the nearest wall, smashing it to bits and exclaiming "I know I must lose! God know's I must lose but WHY MUST I LOSE TO THIS IDIOT?!!". That kinda sounds like my brand of chess. Then there's the Calvin and Hobbs variety but it involves helmets, ballbats, gloves and pencils without erasers. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Rapparee Date: 06 Dec 10 - 09:37 PM Because I was traveling and then was quite, quite busy digging out from under two-plus weeks of being away, I re-started. If you will be good enough to post the positions I will take it from that point. Note that I am trusting you on this. I can't imagine you'd take advantage of a poor, ignorant Yank like myself just to provide an advantage to some fellow Canadian. Remember, Canadians are well known for being nice, and if you aren't nice we'll just have to either invade you again or shut off your beer supply. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: gnu Date: 06 Dec 10 - 10:27 PM The positions are already on this thread. You can read them as well as anybody else. "... invade you again or shut off your beer supply." ??? We invaded you. We burnt your capitol and took your tea service and have it in our national museum. When you "tried" to invade we erected a statue of Brock giving you the finger. Of course, it wasn't really "we". It was the Brits. Canucks would never do anything like that. We are far too polite. Except when it comes to beer. Shut off our beer supply? It is too laugh. Now, play fair. 999 deserves a worthy opponent. The Queen B is not amused and you know what happens when she loses her patience. You don't want her to invade and take your chess pieces too, do you? |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Rapparee Date: 06 Dec 10 - 10:33 PM With the Idaho Legion behind me? Il est a rire! Besides, I've completely cut the Royals off and if they come on my property I'll set the dogs on them (borrowed dachshunds nipping at their ankles)! After that stormy night in Scotland, when we were motoring through Balmoral and they never so much as offered a cup of tea...well, it was then I knew What Sort Of People they were and that their Raisin' Up left something to be desired. |

Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 07 Dec 10 - 09:22 AM Well, was recording yesterday and then this lovely f%%#$&* white stuff with a wind that will not quit and so keeps drifting the f%$#&?* snow all over everywhere and ended up in Chateauguay and will--by the looks of it--be here for the whole f%$#&?* winter because the roads would require an Arctic snow machine to travel with. I trust we will be able to continue this game by Christmas which I heard falls on the 25th again this year. I shall try once more. We began this game and I was under the impression that old notation would be OK to use. If it is no longer OK, lemme know and I will knock my king over and one of the kibbitzers can start a new game with whoever. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: Rapparee Date: 07 Dec 10 - 10:49 AM I ain't inta that A+2AB(c/e) stuff. If it was good enough for all them years it's good enough for me. Phooey on 'em. If they can't read it, well, I say let them natives learn our language! |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 07 Dec 10 - 10:49 AM My chuckle of the day. It is cold--I expect with wind factored in it is about -30 C. Kid going to school trudged by with no hat on. I expect he has a gal he is sweet on and did not want to muss up his hair. In a single day the river seems to have iced over near bridges. For those of you who live in these types of conditions, I will be posting a link to a fast and easy-to-make snow survival shelter. It may end up being a good five minute reading investment. I hope not, but ya never know. |
Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 07 Dec 10 - 10:56 AM Winter Survival Shelter: the Quincee PS I have build more than a few of these and they are really handy. Subject: RE: BS: New chess thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 07 Dec 10 - 11:16 AM One thing I would mention. The article was written by someone who knows.
