If you burn 50 pounds of firewood, and weigh the wood and the air that is consumed, the total weight of the combustion products is the same minus a quantity that is about 10 to the power of minus 32 ....

And no scales that will measure 50 pounds are that accurate...

If someone gave you $1 billion plus or minus one cent, that is only about 10 to the power of minus 11...

This doesn't specifically answer your question but gives good reasons why not to burn driftwood. If your are referring to salt water driftwood one reason I have heard is the salt in it is corrosive to your stove and chimney.

My son-in-law and I were discussing wood burned in traditional cordwood stoves and he said that the instructions with his stove said most emphatically NOT to use driftwood. Any reason why?

The reason not to burn driftwood is that when organics such as wood are burned in the presence of chlorides, dioxin is created in the flue gas. Dioxin is referred to as a persistent, bioaccumulating toxin, meaning it doesn't decompose, and it builds up in the tissues of the organisms that ingest it. Specifically it can concentrate in mother's milk. It has been associated with various cancers.

Chemically, salt is sodium chloride, so salt-water driftwood is a big source of dioxin when burned. Other sources include the burning of plastics like PVC — poly vinyl chloride. There have been major efforts to ban the burning of salt impregnated wood along the coast of British Columbia. The forest industry would float logs down the coast to the big sawmills, then they would burn the resulting scrap in teepee burners. The dioxin emissions were spectacular. The risk of dioxin emissions when plastics are burned is one big reason why disposing of trash in burn barrels is also strongly discouraged. The dioxin story goes to show that some things about wood heating are not intuitive at all.

I was wondering why driftwood doesn't seem to make good firewood, and why it's so difficult to saw. Any explanation. Charley Noble linked to the story of a five-masted schooner that ended up as firewood. I wondered how well it would burn.

The plot thickens. At the end of the Daily Mail article, it says that the land on which the tree stands is owned by the bloke who ran the West Country firm Crown Currency. That company collapsed last month with debts of £20 million plus. My niece and her husband live in that part of the world and had booked and paid for a couple of thousand US dollars with this company prior to a trip to the States - they lost the lot! There are others who had overseas house purchase money tied up with Crown Currency and lost property as a result. I can see that there would be many disgruntled potential axe-wielders but taking it out on a blameless tree is totally uncalled for. However, as has been said earlier, the tree is still alive and it looks capable of growing back in time.

Just look on it as rather drastic pruning. Thorns in hedges get cut down regularly so that they grow stronger. And, of course, the Christains may have taken over the thorn as their symbol but it was spiritually symbolic long, long before Christianity (have a look at Robert Graves' The White Goddess).

There is nothing like standing around a hugh tree where it would take 2, 3, and even 4 people to be able to hug it. These treasures are just that, treasures. It is sad that this has happened and lets hope that it can be brought to life again even though no one living today will ever see the likes of it again.

It is a shame that thoughtless Bastars have done this act. As this is currently regrown from cuttings, presumably the same can be done again.

It is very similar to Grampaw's axe. Ive got my grampaw's old axe. It's a hundred years old. The blade's been replaced a couple of times, as has the handle, but it's still Grampaw's axe.

Vandals have destroyed one of the most celebrated Christian pilgrimage sites in Britain and chopped down a tree said to have sprouted from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea 2,000 years ago.

The Holy Thorn Tree of Glastonbury, Somerset, is visited by thousands every year to pay homage and leave tokens of worship. Those visiting today were moved to tears on finding the tree cut to a stump.
The sacred tree is unique in that it blossoms twice a year - at Christmas and Easter - and sprigs taken from the thorn are sent to The Queen each year for the festive table.

Police tape surrounds the vandalised Holy Thorn tree on Wearyall Hill in Glastonbury as stunned locals look on. The branches were cut off overnight and a police investigation has been launched

Christian legend dictates that Jesus's great uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, came to Britain after the crucifixion 2,000 years ago bearing the Holy Grail - the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper.
He visited Glastonbury and thrust his staff into Wearyall Hill, just below the Tor, planting a seed for the original thorn tree.

Roundheads felled the tree during the English Civil War, when forces led by Oliver Cromwell (pictured) waged a vicious battle against the Crown.
However, locals salvaged the roots of the original tree, hiding it in secret locations around Glastonbury.

It was then replanted on the hill in 1951. Other cuttings were also grown and placed around the town - including its famous Glastonbury Abbey.

Experts had verified that the tree - known as the Crategus Monogyna Bi Flora - originated from the Middle East.

A sprig of holy thorns was taken from the Thorn tree by Glastonbury's St Johns Church on Wednesday and sent to the Queen.

The 100-year-old tradition will see the thorns sit on Her Majesty's dinner table on Christmas Day
Avon and Somerset Police have launched an investigation after locals found that vandals had hacked off the branches of the iconic tree. They were dumped next to the trunk which is protected by a metal cage.
Locals wept openly today at the foot of the tree, on the town's Wearyall Hill opposite its world-famous Tor as they struggled to contain their emotion.
Katherine Gorbing, curator of Glastonbury Abbey, said: 'The mindless vandals who have hacked down this tree have struck at the heart of Christianity.
'It holds a very special significance all over the world and thousands follow in the footsteps of Joseph Arimathea, coming especially to see it.
'It is the most significant of all the trees planted here and can be linked back to the origins of Christianity.
'When I arrived at the Abbey this morning you could look over to the hill and see it was not there.
'It's a great shock to everyone in Glastonbury - the landscape of the town has changed overnight.'
Glastonbury Mayor John Coles rushed to the tree site after he heard the news.
Mr Coles, 66, said: 'I'm stood on Wearyall Hill looking at a sad, sad, sight. The tree has been chopped down - someone has taken a saw to it.
'Some of the main trunk is there but the branches have been sawn away. I am absolutely lost for words - I just do not know why people would want to do this.
'This tree was visited by thousands of people each year and is one of the most important Christian sites. It is known all over the world.'
Deputy Mayor William Knight, 63, added: 'This is absolutely mindless. We are all devastated.'
