Subject: BS: It's all Micca's Fault! From: alanabit Date: 19 Dec 10 - 06:03 AM A week or two back, on a thread about memorable moments, Micca posted with a link to this piece by Elgar. I recognised the melody of "The Song of Liberty" and have been listening to it ever since. I like it better than the more famous - "Last Night of the Proms" - March Number One. Now look Micca, I am just an old rock and roller and you have been leading me astray! I just had to check out the others and I think the No.2, in particular, has a splendid main melody. I have been neglecting my rock and roll lately, even looking up this piece of Smetana. It is one of the most joyful, triumphant pieces of music I have ever heard. It's all Micca's fault! |

Subject: RE: BS: It's all Micca's Fault! From: alanabit Date: 19 Dec 10 - 07:11 AM The Vaughan Williams piece is very jaunty. I shall listen to the others in a minute when I continue with my fitness work. I can do any exercise to music except press ups. You just can't count to a hundred when there is another rhythm going on! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's all Micca's Fault! From: Micca Date: 19 Dec 10 - 07:11 AM Sorry about that Alanabit, it was the combination and juxtaposition of the music and the place that made it so memorable!!!! There was also the Ken Russell Monitor program about Elgar that showed the Malvern Hills to Elgars "Introduction and allegro for strings"!! wonderful Images and music. As I type i am listening to part of "Lucia de Lammermuir" by Donizetti That an Australian director, Paul Cox used in a scene in his Film "Man of Flowers" That has enchanted me since also!!! Funny how sometimes the pix in your head are best, other times some really wonderful scenery fits and other times a Good director marrys image and music!! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's all Micca's Fault! From: alanabit Date: 19 Dec 10 - 07:18 AM True Micca. I posted this on another thread, but on one occasion, I was watching graphic documentary film of the suffering of US soldiers in the Pacific War. A banal pop song: "Tonight You Belong To Me" was played over the horrific images. I had never really liked the song before, but there was something about the (deliberate) incongruity of that music and those images which said more than a "serious" piece ever could have. Time to carry on with that fitness work, which I have been putting off all morning... |
Subject: RE: BS: It's all Micca's Fault! From: alanabit Date: 19 Dec 10 - 11:50 AM I listened to the third of your links as well John. Thanks. I shall have to listen to it again. It did not carry me away first time, but a lot of music works more subtly. Catch it at the right time and you have it in you forever. The second link is not available here in Germany. We used to sing a bit of Vaughan Williams when I was a choirboy forty something years ago. I recall hearing somewhere that Williams was very interested in folk music. The first piece certainly bears that out. By the way, there is a four bar sequence in Smetana's "Bartered Bride Polka", which reminds me of the air used for the Irish folk song "I'll tell me Ma". Is this a coincidence? |
Subject: RE: BS: It's all Micca's Fault! From: John MacKenzie Date: 19 Dec 10 - 12:25 PM I chose them because they're all based on folk songs. You may recognised the main tune of Dives and Lazarus, as The Maid from the County Down/Star of the Conty Down. Also used as the tune for The Foggy Dew. Maid of the County Down an esoteric but interesting version :) |

Subject: RE: BS: It's all Micca's Fault! From: alanabit Date: 19 Dec 10 - 01:33 PM I did recognise the folk tunes John, although the main one in the third piece (which I know best as The Star of the County Down) was worked in particularly subtly. I recognised the folk tunes (especially Hich Germany) in the first piece too. All good stuff. I shall have to listen to more! |
