Subject: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: Wesley S Date: 24 Dec 10 - 06:52 AM We sing about angels, wise men, drummer boys , babes in a manger and Mary. But does anyone know and Christmas songs about Joseph - from his point of view? It seems to me like he gets left out of the Christmas carol collection. He gets a few passing references - but that's about it. I'd like to see the stepdad in the story get his due. |

When I sing "If Anybody Asks You Who I Am" I include a verse about Joseph. One of these days I'm going to write a song about Joseph. |

Subject: ADD: Joseph's Song From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Dec 10 - 05:39 PM A soloist in our choir is doing a Michael Card song called Joseph's Song tonight. It's a little too maudlin for me, but a lot of people like it. JOSEPH'S SONG (Michael Card) How could it be this baby in my arms Sleeping now, so peacefully The Son of God, the angel said How could it be? Lord, I know He's not my own Not of my flesh, not of my bone Still Father let this baby be The son of my love. Father, show me where I fit into this plan of yours How can a man be father to the Son of God? Lord, for all my life I've been a simple carpenter How can I raise a king? How can I raise a king? He looks so small His face and hands so fair And when He cries, the sun just seems to disappear But when He laughs, it shines again How could it be? Father, show me where I fit into this plan of yours How can a man be father to the Son of God? Lord, for all my life I've been a simple carpenter How can I raise a king? How can I raise a king? How could it be this baby in my arms Sleeping now, so peacefully The Son of God, the angel said How could it be? How could it be? It Wasn't His Child and Joseph's Lullaby are other similar songs. Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Dec 10 - 07:40 PM Many, many years ago, I had a record by a folksinger named Fred Engelberg, who wrote a song called NOBODY'S TALKIN' 'BOUT JOE. The lyrics I remember are: Ev'rybody's talkin' 'bout Jesus 'n' Mary, Nobody talks about Joe ... poor Joe. ...What kind of God is this? He'd impregnate his woman, cuckold his man, Then crucify his only Son. [I don't think it's the kind of song most people would want to sing, to get into the Christmas spirit.] |
Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: Mary Katherine Date: 24 Dec 10 - 10:47 PM There's a song about Joseph called "It Wasn't His Child" - I can't remember the singer, but it was a female country artist, within the last ten years. |
Subject: Lyr Add: IT WASN'T HIS CHILD (Skip Ewing) From: Mary Katherine Date: 24 Dec 10 - 10:49 PM Found the lyrics but don't know who wrote or sang it: IT WASN'T HIS CHILD (Donald "Skip" Ewing) He was her man, she was his wife And late one winter night He knelt by her As she gave birth But it wasn't his child It wasn't his child Yet still he took him as his own And as he watched him grow It brought him joy He loved that boy But it wasn't his child It wasn't his child But like a father He was strong and kind and good And I believe he did his best It wasn't easy for him But he did all he could His son was different from the rest It wasn't his child It wasn't his child And when the boy became a man He took his father's hand And soon the world all know why It wasn't his child It wasn't his child And like his father He was strong and kind and good And I believe he did his best It wasn't easy for him But he did all he could He grew up with his hands in wood And He died with his hands in wood He was God's child He was God's child He was her man, she was his wife And late one winter night He knelt by her As she gave birth But it wasn't his child It was God's child thread (click) |
Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: EBarnacle Date: 25 Dec 10 - 12:15 AM Jim, That seems to be a characteristic of gods in many mythologies...that they just seem to get off on fathering as many children as possible, then not doing anything useful. Sort of a cookoo's nest situation. |
Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: janemick Date: 25 Dec 10 - 04:28 AM How about "When Righteous Joseph wedded was" It is mostly about Mary, but gives some of Joseph's side of the story. It has a verse reassuring Joseph that Mary was indeed still a virgin! I believe it is in: English Traditional Songs and Carols by Lucy Broadwood (London: Boosey & Co., 1908) but the words are available online - I found them here Righteous Joseph |

Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: Georgiansilver Date: 25 Dec 10 - 11:15 AM Is there really any reason why Joseph should have some notoriety?? Other than of course his acceptance that Jesus was immaculately concieved from God and he stood by Mary for that very fact. Not sure why anyone would consider a thread of this nature necessary. |
Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 27 Dec 10 - 10:31 AM Georgiansilver, if notoriety in folklore could be earned by religious relevance, Paul would hold one of the top positions, but I don't know any genuine folk tale or song about him at all. Joseph has captured the imagination of Christians right from the beginning (see the thread about the apocrypha), and is therefore prominent in all genres of Christian folklore. This may be one of the reasons for the high esteem of craftsmanship in Christian societies, which is the foundation of technological leadership still today. |

Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: GUEST,sleepyjon Date: 22 Dec 11 - 06:52 PM There's a good solid trad one called "Joseph and Mary" in the Penguin book of Christmas Carols collected by RVW in Herefordshire with a great tune given there, but which I have also encountered sung to the same tune as used by Anne Briggs for "A fine young girl all in the month of May" (on the LP "The Bird in the Bush") which IMHO makes it truly magnificent. (Don't know which one pinched the tune from the other, though.)) (? seem to have lost my cookie.) SJ |
Subject: ADD: Joseph (Jake Thackray) From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 22 Dec 11 - 07:15 PM From the jakethackray.com website: JOSEPH (Jake Thackray) Joseph, Joseph, in your cattle stall, Joseph, Joseph, what do you make of it all, make of it all? You and your working man's hands and your wrinkled eyes: How come that you understand? How come so wise? How come that you show no surprise When all around the snowy ground is golden tonight, this frosty night? How come that you know just who the baby is this winter midnight? Oh, Joseph, Joseph, in your cattle stall, Joseph, Joseph, what do you make of it all? Do you know these three Kings, just who they are: Caspar and Melchior and Balthazar? Do you know why they came so far Or even why the air is full of angels tonight, this frosty night? And why your head is full of music on this winter midnight? Oh, Joseph, Joseph, in your cattle stall, Joseph, Joseph, what do you make of it all? You were so true for so long, so unafraid. But nobody sings you any songs, no serenades. And although your face is old and pale Yet I for one will keep you in my mind's eye tonight, this frosty night; You're just the man that I want to remember on this winter midnight. Oh, Joseph, Joseph, in your cattle stall, Joseph, Joseph, what do you make of it all, make of it all? Words & Music: Jake Thackray LFF |
Subject: ADD: Hands of Joseph (Ralph McTell) From: GUEST,Guest: MikeK Date: 22 Dec 11 - 10:24 PM HANDS OF JOSEPH (Ralph McTell) When they looked at Joseph's hands They said, They're the hands of a carpenter They're big and they're powerful and they're strong They're the hands that should work in wood And they're the hands that should work a long day Joseph he did all those things But he also learned how to play He would sing about joy, sing about faith That the people wished they had How he heard the voice of Jesus When the rolling sea got mad He's a boat in the harbour, he's safe in that love He know some day he'll be sailing above When they looked at Joseph's hands They said, They're the hands of a stonemason They're big and they're powerful and they're strong They're the hands that should work in stone And they're the hands that should work a long day Joseph he did all those things But he also learned how to play When they looked at Joseph's hands They said, They're the hands of a fisherman The musician and the mason-carpenter And he's happy all the time For they're working every day And those old hands of Joseph Oh how they can play. |
Subject: ADD: Joseph - I Was Not His Father, He Was Mine From: GUEST,MikeK Date: 22 Dec 11 - 10:33 PM Joseph - I Was Not His Father, He Was Mine (Michael McLean) He was working late one evening With the wood he knew so well When she thought she recognized him Though at first,She really couldn't tell As she humbly begged his pardon A strange sadness swelled inside When she asked, "Aren't you the father Of that man they crucified?" Then the carpenter repeated what he's said so many times He said, "I as not His father, He was mine." Then he humbly went on working With those worn and caloused hands Though she did not ask more questions He knew she didn't understand. So he asked if she would help him And he saw her answer in a glance She did all the chores he asked her She was so grateful for the chance Then they talked for hours of Jesus And how he knew He was divine He said "I was not His father, He was mine. For how could one so foolish and so flawed Ever hope to raise the Son of God?" Then he spoke of the misgivings That he had had a thousand times And how Jesus found the tender moments To let him know he had done just fine And then the carpenter recited The greatest truths he'd ever learned And testified they all came form Jesus And then her heart within her burned They embraced as she departed, And Joseph told her one more time, "Tell them I was not His father Tell them He was mine No, I was not His father, He is mine." |

Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: MGM·Lion Date: 02 Sep 12 - 12:57 AM When Seamus Ennis used to sing "Rocking The Cradle", he would always make two points - 1 that it was the song from which "Git Along, Little Dogies" derived its tune; and 2 that it was a very ancient song, believed by some to have been originally narrated by Joseph, left "weeping and weary with rocking the cradle, rocking a baby that's none of my own". ~Michael~ |

Subject: RE: Any known Christmas songs about Joseph? From: GUEST Date: 08 Dec 15 - 04:23 PM Doubtless this thread is long dead, but I have to correct Georgiansilver. Jesus was not "immaculately conceived." The immaculate conception is a Catholic doctrine that supposes that if Mary had a normal human sinful nature then she could not have born the son of God, therefore it was Mary's conception by her parents that was declared immaculate so that she could be the sinless mother of God. |
