We had a small earthquake this morning, a 3.8, about 45 miles southwest of us. I was half asleep on the couch and thought a truck was going to the brush pile. A few minutes later news came on with breaking news telling us we just had a earthquake and people were already reporting how much it shook their house and they thought a building had blown up cause it shook so hard. Now the house I live inis pretty old and all I thought it was a truck going by. Really am amused by how excited people around here get by such a little quake, tremor really, hate to see if we got a srtonger quake. By the way I grew up in California so that may be the reason for my ho-hum attitude.

Go to USGS and report your experience under the "Did you feel it?" section. You will be doing your part to help the geologists to better understand seismic events and possibly to predict the same.

The Indiana quake was reported pretty generally, but at 3.8 it wasn't really at a magnitude likely to cause much damage. The unusual thing is that it was being reported as the first quake (of any size) on that particular fault in several hundred years.

Prevailing opinion seems to be that the "mid continent" faults in the US are unlikely to produce disaster level quakes - due to them being mostly "tension faults" and/or "slip faults" rather than being like the ones that build up great compressive stresses nearer the Rockies and on west; but those who've seen the reports on the big "New Madrid" slip a few decades back do have a tendency to wonder when a big one might sneak up on us.

It is - for now - unlikely that either Indiana or other central or north-central US locations that lie along fault lines will suffer tsunami effects, which is somewhat reassuring.

i was on the phone with a woman in the s.f. bay area yesterday and she paused in the conversation to tell me that she felt a tremor while we were talking...she says she lives near the train tracks but there was not a train going by at the time,so she thought it was an earth quake.

i always go here for earth quake info...and to post reports..

Ebbie - Not particularly. The northeastern end of the New Madrid Seismic Zone (source of the infamous 1811-1812 earthquakes) does extend up into Southwest Indiana. Now, Marion (where mmm1a was reporting from) is much further upstate, but it's certainly not surprising that there would be a few minor faults up there.

And then there was the 3.6 tremor back in June that woke a few of us here in MD out of a deep sleep...

A spokesman for the US Geological Survey said that they thought it was the result of 'isostatic rebound,' which is the continent still moving upward after being pressed into the mantle by the weight of the glaciers a mere 10,000 to 2 million years ago. (Those years are my own approximation.)

I read this in the Kansas City Star newspaper today.

The quake was felt as far away as 250 miles because the rocks of the Midwest are so continuous. Take that, California!
