Well then he borrowed heavily from the earlier versions.

I just listened to it.

Like the other versions way better too.

According to http://www.buckowens.com/discography.html:

There was a 45-rpm single, Warner Bros. 8433:
OUR OLD MANSION/HOW COME MY DOG DON'T BARK, released August 3, 1977.

It was also on the album "Our Old Mansion" Warner Brothers BS3087, released Sept. 30, 1977.

It's also on "The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings" a 2-CD set (Rhino 2010).

According to repertoire.BMI.com, Buck Owens was the sole writer of HOW COME MY DOG DON'T BARK.

This agrees with the information at the U.S. Copyright Office.

I finally found a sound sample at Rhino Records:

"...Timbucktoo.
Uncle Bill's in California.
Cousin Will's sick with pneumonia.
Yeah, an' that don't leave no one but me and you.
How come my dog don't bark when you come 'round?
He wags his tail and lays down on the ground...."

Therefore I think we can safely say it's not the same song as any of those in the other thread.

It has been discussed very completely there.

Amazon shows the song recorded by Eddie Crow and by "Guitar Shorty" but both are blues performers and likely used the Dr John version. Also done by Les Brown, but that was shown only in a listing with no other info.

Most places seem to think it's exclusively a Dr John song, but Country Titles shows Buck Owens as the Composer and Dr John as performer. No other info at the site though, so that may not be a reliable bit.

Also seen with the shorter title just "The Dog" but that doesn't show up in any Owens associations either.

Owens appeared on "Hee Haw" and also on "The Jimmy Dean Show" somewhat earlier, so it's possible the song - in his version - might show up in old tapes of those shows if you can't find anything else; but I don't see a way to search them very efficiently.

John

Just a further clarification. The Buck Owens version is country/western, not blues. He recorded it on an album called something like "Our Old Mansion" in the 70s.

I have a blues version by William Clarke if you are interested.
Joe Turner also did a blues version that's pretty good.

I have read messages in the threads about hounds that don't bark. Dr. John sings a different version from Buck Owens. I would settle for listening to the Buck Owens song and writing down the words but I can't find an online recording. I am a new member and appreciate your help.
