Hi,

this is my first post here on the great mudcat, and I hope someone can help me.
I've tried to understand Big Joe, and what I got is quite promising... But what about the rest?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DRR6oSxa7o

I got a girl lives up on the hill
I got a girl lives up on the hill
???????????? with me
Lord but I love her still

She's got eyes like diamonds, teeth... ??????????????? gold
She's got eyes like diamonds, teeth... ??????????????? gold
Evrery time she loves me she ... ????

My baby is a jockey: she's teaching me how to ride
My baby is a jockey: she's teaching me how to ride
she said: Twice in the middle and daddy from side to side

wooo - get it daddy, get it   -   uuuuh weee

Well Rebecca get your basket - let's go down to the woods
Well Rebecca get your basket - let's go down to the woods
there I pick no berry but we come back feeling good

yes-yes, yes-yes, yes-yes, yes-yes, yes-yes and no

well all right then
well all reet then
well all root then
well all road then
well all rot then
well all read then

bye-bye, bye-bye, bye-bye, hey baby - a-hi

There's one word I still don't get, but this is what I think I hear:

Verse 1 line 3:
Well, the --- done an' quit me, Lord, but I love her still.

Verse 2 line 1&2:
She's got eyes like diamonds, teeth shine like Klondike gold.

Verse 2 line 3:
Every time she loves me she sends my mellow soul.

Verse 4 line 3:
May not pick no berries but we'll come back feeling good.

(Some of these lines also appear in ROLL 'EM PETE, also by Big Joe Turner & Pete Johnson. In fact, the tune seems virtually identical.)

Thanks a lot, Jim!

"Roll 'Em Pete" really starts exactly the same way.
And the third verse became its own song as well: My Gal's a Jockey

So, the Rebecca lyrics are alomost worked out:

I got a girl lives up on the hill
I got a girl lives up on the hill
Well, the ????? done an' quit me, Lord, but I love her still.

She's got eyes like diamonds, teeth shine like Klondike gold.
She's got eyes like diamonds, teeth shine like Klondike gold.
Every time she loves me she sends my mellow soul.

May not pick no berries but we'll come back feeling good.

yes-yes, yes-yes, yes-yes, yes-yes, yes-yes and no

well all right then
well all reet then
well all root then
well all road then
well all rot then
well all read then

bye-bye, bye-bye, bye-bye, hey baby - a-hi
