Or was it? The divers seem to think so, but the news article in the Providence Journal indicates some doubt.

He gave up the ship [Lawrence] and found victory.

Interesting story. So Perry lost his schooner Revenge on a ledge in 1811 but went on to lead the Yanks to victory on Lake Erie in the War of 1812.
