Subject: RE: BS: Excellent paintings here From: JohnInKansas Date: 16 Jan 11 - 01:37 AM Although it's specialized mostly to "classic" artists, a good place to look for artists is at the index at ArtCyclopedia A search for an artist by name gets a list of museums and galleries with the artist's works on display, which can be a good way to find other artists with similar style, since many museums and galleries "specialize" in fairly narrow kinds of art. A short index to the most popular artists at what is possibly the largest web gallery (in terms of works posted permanently) is at Popular Artists at ARC, or you can go to the full alhabetical index of the artists at the site at Art Renewal Artist Index. The last time I checked, I believe that Art Renewal claimed something like 17,000 artists, and they had >50,000 images posted at the site. I have a list of about 30 "living msters" who were there, but some of them may have drifted in and out due to "proprietary rights" considerations, so I'm not sure how many are still there. Annual competitions have produced lots of "new works" hidden in the nooks and crannies at the site, but I haven't checked recently to see how many of those are still accessible. A number of larger web galleries that I frequented 5 or so years ago seem to have disappeared, but there's still a lot of great work being shown if you poke around a bit. John |

Most of the established artists have their own websites, and several have lots of students doing good work. Quite a few of the individuals have had works for sale, with prices on those sites, although I haven't checked recently. Unfortunately most of the ones I like go for around $30,000 for a "run of the mill" original. A couple of the best portrait artists demand about twice that for an interview to see if they want to paint your mug, before the price for slapping the paint on is negotiated. You might also look at the other link above that shows results for the most recent ARC Competition. If you read through the related articles, you'll likely find that Fred (the guy who runs the site) frequently buys a few of the winners, and what he pays should give you a good idea of what "good amateur originals" are going for these days, but keep in mind that even the losers have been through stiff competition to get their entries into the competition. The prints that the site sells are generally as good as you can get, and are generally what can honestly be called "Museum Quality." You ain't gonna find anything like them at Walmart. John |

All the artists I liked and clicked on seemed only to be showing work that was already in private collections - i.e. stuff they had already sold. If you are right about the prices there is little point in my contacting them. I have sometimes paid three-figure prices for original paintings but never more than that. I simply haven't got the money. Thanks anyway, I enjoyed looking. |

Robert Rauschenburg was at an auction where one of his paintings was being sold by someone who had purchased it years earlier and it brought, for the time, a lot of money... I don't recall the amount but suffice to say it was a good chunk of change... When all was said and done and the auctioneer yelled sold, the story goes that Rauschenburg was so pissed off that he stood up and told the folks who had been bidding on it to see him personally if that's the kinda money they were willing to pay for one of his paintings... I donno??? My major was painting & printmaking and VCU's art school is highly regarded but I don't think too many of the people I went to school with ever made any serious money... I do know of two who are still very much "starving" (but good) artists... The best thing about majoring in painting & printmaking is trading works... I am blessed to have what I have and really don't much miss what IO had to give up to get them... My favorite is a painting entitled "Artist's Studio" by Richard Bland... He is a very prolific painter in Richmond and one day, after his death of course, will get the acclaim he deserves... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Excellent paintings here From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Jan 11 - 02:18 PM It's been a while since I fully explored the ARC website, but I believe they've mixed the "Living Masters" in with the "Approved Academies" now. The suggestion would be that by watching some of the academies one might be likely to find academy students with "less established" reputations, whose works might be more reasonably priced. It also should be fairly easy to figure out which of the academies are "prestige" ones with competitive entrance (i.e. some reputation) requirements and those who accept just about anybody with sufficient enthusiasm. There are quite good artists at both kinds of places, but of course you have to dig out the ones that you like in order to make any attempt at getting samples of their work. When I first retired and decided I had time to "learn something about art" I made the tour of quite a few web galleries, but eventually ARC reached "critical mass" where they had everything (of interest to me) that any of the others did, and the ARC images - and documentation - were generally much better quality. At least half of the "other galleries" that I thought were pretty good appear to be gone from the web now. ARC reached their 40,000 image point at about the same time that I finished my "first tour" looking at every thumbnail and the large view of anything that suited my interest - on a dial-up connection. For a time they posted regular lists of new additions, so I was able to keep up and maintain my "seen it all" claim, but when they reached their original goal of 50,000 images they got pretty sloppy about reporting additions. Prevously, all images could be saved; but they now block saving of works for living artists or where copyright claims are known. I try to respect their restrictions **. I do have some downloads of living artists from before saving was blocked but have sequestered them where they're "not available to others." **(unless something is really interesting?) John |
