Subject: Origins: Help Identify Composer From: Tom Paine Date: 22 Jan 11 - 12:43 PM Hi Everyone, I need help identifying a vocal version of the 23rd Psalm ("The Lord Is My Shepherd") that I used to hear often during the early 1960s. I've searched Schirmer, Hal Leonard, and numerous other online sheet music vendors and listened to lots of recordings on YouTube without success. I've also asked for help on another singer's forum but no one has been able to identify this tune. Below is a link to a recording of the portions I remember: http://www.box.net/shared/8yu2e7vgos Please excuse poor singing and errant pitches. I'd appreciate learning the name of the composer of this version so that I might track down the sheet music. Thanks in advance for your help. Tom |

Subject: RE: Origins: Help Identify Composer From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 22 Jan 11 - 01:14 PM Schubert, Franz Peter, would he be the composer of the music? I looked up the lyrics, chords, and then sheet music, and found a link to a bio on Schubert (1797-1828). I hope this helps. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Help Identify Composer From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 22 Jan 11 - 02:21 PM It may be helpful if you mention the setting. Choir? Female, male, mixed? Solo singer? Organ, classical orchestra, piano? I know of a Psalm 23 by Schubert (D.706) for female voices and organ; this is not the tune you sang. I would start searching among English composers in the tradition of Hubert Parry (a wild guess). |

Subject: RE: Origins: Help Identify Composer From: Tom Paine Date: 22 Jan 11 - 04:04 PM maple leaf boy - Not Schubert, but thanks for answering. Grishka - It was a female solo singer with organ accompaniment. Does this narrow the field? In the meantime, I'm researching English composers along the lines you suggested. Thanks, Tom |
