Subject: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Will Fly Date: 29 Jan 11 - 06:22 AM Anyone catch the documentary on Mark Knopfler on BBC last night? I've just caught up with it on the iPlayer. An excellent programme - and confirmed what I'd always thought - that MK is a good man. Intelligent enough and calm enough not to have totally seduced by the stadium rock lifestyle; done what he's wanted to do; lives a quiet and productive life offstage; writes and sings just what he wants to. And has come full circle to a traditional-style background in his recent music-making. Oh - and a pretty good guitar player as well... |

Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 29 Jan 11 - 07:19 AM I caught it entirely by accident and continued watching Guitar Heroes till after 2 a.m. Great to see Mr Knopfler playing with Messrs McCusker & McGoldrick and the archive footage of the Spanish City and Cullercoats. What a nice (and talented) bloke. |

Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Arnie Date: 30 Jan 11 - 07:15 AM Spotted it in the tv guide and set the video. What a great programme and Mark came across as a modest type who was only too happy to chat and share his experiences with a tv audience. Some great music included as well. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Singing Referee Date: 30 Jan 11 - 08:53 AM Brilliant! Always liked Dire Straites and Mark's guitar playing, but what an intelligent, balanced and modest man. Lovely stuff! |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: JedMarum Date: 30 Jan 11 - 09:08 AM ... it was banned in Canada. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Will Fly Date: 30 Jan 11 - 09:10 AM I thought of all Canadian malarkey that while MK was blasting out "Money For Nothing" in the programme - original words and all! |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: mally Date: 30 Jan 11 - 12:34 PM If anyone missed it (like me) it's on again tonight BBC4 2330hrs. I won't miss it tonight. Mally |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: mikesamwild Date: 30 Jan 11 - 01:06 PM A great programme and nice to see Mike McGoldrick and John McCusker in his band! he also acknowledged his love of traditional music , attributed to his time in Scotland. That comes out in his melodywork, ornamentation and note bending. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: JedMarum Date: 30 Jan 11 - 01:22 PM Looks like a great show ... I'll have to hope it plays in the US sometime, or goes to Netflix. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST Date: 30 Jan 11 - 07:02 PM But they totally blanked "Love over Gold yet mentioned all the other albums. Why? |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST Date: 30 Jan 11 - 07:55 PM An excellant show about a great man and the Dire Straits members over the years. Not forgetting the Notting Hillbillies, Brendan and Steve Phillips. Thanks for a great show, and I might have picked up a few tips on all that great guitar work. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST Date: 30 Jan 11 - 08:32 PM Sorry, the guest at 07-55pm was me, why am I a guest after all these years? ooops, Bluegrassman |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 31 Jan 11 - 03:23 AM I only wish that Mark was a better singer! He obviously realised early on that he didn't have much of a voice and so he decided that he needed to make what he had more interesting by adding "character" to it! As a result, I'm afraid, I tend to cringe through most of his performances. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: theleveller Date: 31 Jan 11 - 03:42 AM Yes it was a great programme. MK is a fantastic all-round performer and comes across as a genuinely nice bloke. |

The lyrics and guitar playing are enough for me and the voice is passable apart from the really low notes. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Van Date: 31 Jan 11 - 04:01 AM Why did the beeb hide that on BBC4? Great programme glad you highlighted it. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: The Borchester Echo Date: 31 Jan 11 - 04:15 AM Mark Knopfler is a storyteller, not a performer with bel canto ambitions. He puts over his lyrics in an almost conversational way as a contrast to the glorious melodies pouring from his own finger-style Stratocaster and his band. His words abd meaning are absolutely clear, as opposed to the performer who is too wrapped up in how the vocals sound. I look forward to hearing more of his new direction and musicians. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: mally Date: 01 Feb 11 - 02:35 PM If MK turned up at our session at the Welly in Hull this Sun and sang like that I wouldn't complain. Mally |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 01 Feb 11 - 04:44 PM I hope you wouldn't complain! But, based just on his singing, would you book him to appear at your local folk club? |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: My guru always said Date: 02 Feb 11 - 03:46 AM We've recorded it so will watch when we get a chance. Dire Straits were a favouritie of mine, along with Genesis & Status Quo and.... Oh, loads! Gotta a fab CD of Mark Knopfler playing with Chet Atkins, that's a real treat to listen to!!! I'd go to the local folk club if he were booked!! |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Will Fly Date: 02 Feb 11 - 04:34 AM "Neck and Neck" is a very pleasant album - both guitarists sound very relaxed. On the first Notting Hillbillies album ("Missing - presumed having a good time"), MK is very self-effacing indeed. Obviously very much a 'team' album. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Green Man Date: 02 Feb 11 - 08:32 AM Eee can come to ours for a cuppa tea anytime e likes. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 02 Feb 11 - 09:49 AM Caught it as a download from www.eztv.it. Great show. D |

Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST,giovanni Date: 18 Feb 11 - 09:01 AM "Caught it as a download from www.eztv.it." Don can you check that address - I get a zero response from it. I guess it's an Italian site which should be double fine for me as that's where I am. g |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST,Gerry Cooper Date: 18 Feb 11 - 12:38 PM Steve Phillips is in Robim Hoods Bay (I think!) Where is Brendan Crocker? Steve is indeed still resident in RHB. I think Mr Croker still lives in Leeds but I've not seen him for a while... |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: stallion Date: 18 Feb 11 - 07:42 PM mmmmm Remember them from the John Bull days, another good pub bulldozed to make a car park! |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 19 Feb 11 - 08:57 AM I remember reading an interview with Chet Atkins about the album he made with Mark. Chet had never met Mark before the recording session and was expecting an obnoxious, full-of-himself, rock ( Chet had encountered many such "stars" over the years), but he was amazed to find that Mark was charming, repectful and a joy to work with. I love Mark's playing but this story makes me love Mark the man. |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: Gallus Moll Date: 28 Apr 11 - 09:45 PM I love Mark Knopfler for 'Secondary Waltz' - - thanks Mark, from an xpe!!! |
Subject: RE: Mark Knopfler documentary BBC4 From: GUEST,Deb B, Date: 26 Jun 11 - 10:12 AM I am from the US. Obviously it was not aired here and I have been trying to find a copy on the BBC web, but can only get to the BBCAmerica site. I can get Part 1 on youtube, but not the rest. Does anyone have a copy of this show or can get one if the BBC is selling them on the other side of the Pond? I would be happy to send the money first - for some reason I trust Knopfler fans =) reply brink0925@gmail.com Thanks to anyone that can help a deprived soul in the US. |
