I seem to recall an early series of Huge Fearlessly-Eatsitall bobbing around the canal system in a boat called the Bain-Marie, and foraging a bit. He then tried to get Joe Public to try the things he cooked.

Sorrel from the tow-path where folks walk their dogs, and inflicting woodlouse omelette on some poor unsuspecting chap who was passing by with his little lad (who tried manfully to be polite and say it was OK, but whose face told another tale) are two episodes I remember.

The whole thing was a bit crazy, maybe Parry would have a different take.

'Come Dine With Me' can be quite funny because the food can be either good or very bad (swiss roll and custard) and then it would depend on whether the contestants actually liked each other or not when it came to voting. The commentary is a little bit over the top sometimes, but that is my only gripe.

Really I am surprised that they haven't come up with 'Cooking on the Road during a Coach Trip' yet.

One man and his Campervan is one that I am going to do my very best to avoid. To me it is just another excuse for a food programme. It could be good for promoting tourism if he visits different regions around the UK but you can get that from the Hairy Bikers.

As most people work, women and men, one can't be too hard on them preferring to buy a takeaway or stick something in the microwave. It's just the endless munching on burgers, KFC or pizzas which isn't good for health. If the takeaway is a Chinese or Indian meal, it's not too bad healthwise. Ditto the microwave dinners if they're healthy ones. I remember staggering home exhausted after work and peeling spuds with my coat on. Who wants to do that? But I do wonder how many folk can bake a cake, make pastry, bread etc. nowadays? Did anyone watch Kirsty Allsop and Phil Spencer at Christmas time? The daft things they cooked, fiddly to the point of C.O.D., and ingredients costing the absolute Earth, what planet are these toffs on? (The Rich People's Planet, I suppose)

English cuisine in pubs and restaurants has improved immeasurably over the last 20 years. But the proliferation of cookery programmes on TV hasn't exponentially increased the quality of cooking in the home. It's become cookery porn. Watch the programmes while snacking on a TV dinner...

It's like that in Canada too, Q. Without the influx of many interesting foreigners from Asia and elsewhere that has occurred in the last few decades, I shudder to think of the wretched stuff that one would be limited to eating at the local restaurants. One can still get that wretched stuff, of course, but now own has a choice! ;-) In my case, I eat mainly at the Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Indian restaurants. There are also one or two Chinese places which are pretty good. And there is ONE genuinely fine fish and chips place in town...for that, I guess, I can think the British tradition.

British cookery almost improved when some of those serving the Raj came home with Anglo-Indian currys.
The immigrants from India and the Pacific rim have made England a place where one can always find a good meal.

I have been yearning for Nigella Lawson ever since reading one of those Adrian Mole books by Sue Townsend. She sounds quite attractive to me. Must go to Youtube and get my daily fix of Nigella! ;-)

One thing I think I should mention. The UK has long had a reputation worldwide for having pretty dreadful cuisine. That reputation is now being imperilled by all these TV cooking shows which could encourage Britons to raise their culinary standards. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but I just thought I'd comment on it. There is something to be said, after all, for maintaining a tradition, even if it is an uninspiring one...

I can't watch any of them but their books are excellent.

I enjoyed a comment by Clarissa Dixon-Wright when everyone was slagging Delia off because of her series of books on boiling water. She said 'I wont say a word against Delia. She's given people the confidence to use my recipies'.

We're not the only ones! Gregg Wallace (of Masterchef) remarked last week in 'Countdown' (and again in next week's Radio Times) how he dislikes hearing about a 'classic with a twist'. If it's a clasasic, it doesn't need a twist!

This whole thread would sit nicely in the "Rant" thread currently running.
I'm constantly irked by the rolling cookery programmes offering an endless opportunity to observe so called celebrities telling me how to make my dinner whilst showing me how lifestyle is pale and uninteresting measured against their beautifully designed homes, cosmopolitan friends and educated taste.

However, my wife likes them.

This is a source of some disagreement as her enjoyment of such twaddle now extends to "Come Dine With Me". A show about dim-witted dullards who can't cook, no nothing about entertaining guests and seem to have strange personality quirks, making them the worst possible people to have over for dinner!!
I don't know how I keep my foot out of the TV!!!

Now - a cookery programme on nature's bounty, fronted by Bruce Parry would be good. His recent forays into the Arctic is the only reason I keep a TV!!! He's about the only presenter of anything that deserves credibility in my opinion!!

Have to agree with Shimrod here..Hairy Bikers are incredibly cringeworthy - I'm embarassed by their attempts at humour...
This Campervan thing - I caught a bit of it last night. Matey's attempt at mussel cooking seemed to get washed away by the sea.I turned it off at that point. Poor stuff...!! Another one jumping on the bandwagon!!

I reckon 99% of TV is utter shite.....

You never get programmes about the nuances of English cuisine. The various ways for example you can can enjoy a packet of cheese and onion crisps and a couple of pints.

Standing on Monsall head on a windy day with a packet of Kettles Crisps (plain naturally) and pint of Old Peculiar.

having one of the free chip butties in the interval at Mansfield folk Club.

Not to mention the free grub in the interval at The Vernon in Derby.

Its always boring shit - rostis and coulis and jus. I mean, if you put your rosti between two slices of buttered bread, them dipped it in your coulis and then your jus - you still wouldn't have a decent sandwich.

Philip Harben may have been the first Television chef (1946) but was followed closely by Marguerite Patten (1947). Fanny Craddock's television career only began in the mid-1950s.

Gnu, Graham Kerr was a big hit here, but TV cooking in the UK goes right back to the early 50s. A man called Philip Harben was the first TV 'celebrity chef', followed by the already mentioned Fanny Cradock.

For a while I subscribed to BBCAmerica, but dropped it. That guy who wrecks restaurants and says fuck every other sentence was too much.

Ah, I can remember the days when it was just Fanny and Johnny Craddock!

Poor Johnny wasn't allowed to say anything during the programme but was given orders such as "put it in the oven, Johnny!". He was, however allowed to say a couple of sentences at the end.

On one occasion Fanny had been cooking doughnuts, and Johnny achieved TV immortality with the line:-

"Well, it's goodbye from me and here's hoping all your doughnuts end up looking just like Fanny's!"

I did used to have a soft spot for the Two Fat Ladies. I believe Jennifer is no longer with us. They were very funny at times. They once visited a convent to cook for the nuns and one of the Sisters, explaining how they managed the land, said "We have a man twice a week." Clarissa's face was a picture!
