Buckingham Palace has confirmed US President Barack Obama will come to the UK on a state visit in May.

How dare he after his disgusting BP slagging.

Who is going to pay for this?

We are literally bankrupt as a country and millions of people are so poorly off.

We all trashed BP and they deserved it. As I understand it, they are no longer a British company, but rather a multi national giant that is mostly Dutch.

The US take on BP was (at least it felt like) antiBritish bigotry - and now established to be wrong in that the fault lay in other companies.

I quite like Obama although a little more spine would be good - now if he would kindly pay his embassy's parking fines and their outstanding congestion charges rather than being more royalist than the king it would go down quite well.

I am not sure what is getting to some.... they want to claim that BP is "not exactly British", yet they are offended as if they are still claiming it AS British. I think the headquarters is still in England, and in the former 'discussion', I read most of the complaints as against BP's attitude and handling of the gulf emergency.
I saw nothing in President Obama's comments that would indicate condemnation of the UK, and state visits happen all the time between important nations, and feeling defensive because he was critical of that non-British company which sounds British and has its headquarters in England is downright silly!

That way, we will have to rely on trade based on merit rather than playing on the twee yet convenient view that others have of us?

Back in the '70s, we were known for Rolls Royces, yet the reality was British Leyland and Red Robbo. Only our reputation based on James Watt, I K Brunel and others kept our exports up.

Come the '80s and I was trying to sell British engineering overseas. Describing Big Ben to a dude in Chicago was a hell of a lot easier than explaining our workmanship and prices in order to get business.

State visits never cost money, but by heck they make them. Trade deals always accompany them. In case anybody forgot, we have a government who may make decisions that clash with many peoples' views, but if there is to be any recovery at all, they are gambling on the private sector leading it.

And that means trade.

And that means persuading the USA to stop being so protectionist and open up markets.

And that means state visits.

Maybe he is coming over to tell us all about him keeping his boot on the neck of Chevron/Texaco responsible for massive environmental damage in the Amazon Basin equivalent to 8 times the Macondo spill every year for a period of 18 years. But somehow I doubt that he will Chevron/Texaco after all being an American Company trying to duck out of an 8 billion US$ fine. The claimants did want 27 billion US$ in compensation, now what was it that BP volunteered to pay again when they could have hidden behind a 75million US$ cap?

Tony H of BP was right the Macondo spill was literally "A drop in the Ocean" whereas the spill Chevron are being taken to task for in a court case that has been ongoing since 1993 is 146 times the magnitude and occurred on land where oil and toxic waste has seeped into the soil and poisoned the water table, completely destroyning the land and the forest.
