12 years ago, I met a lovely basset hound named Phoebe. She was psychology scarred by the abuse and starvation she suffered through the first several months of her life. She was a rescue from the local kennel. Still my heart breaks, when I think of how bony she was, when I bathed her over and over again, to get the kennel stench off her body. Her experiences made her believe that she would have to eat everything. There have been times we left a full bag of dog food on the table...and come home to find her belly bulging...and a big hole in the almost empty bag. She was always the happiest when it came to eating, either her regular food, or the nightly treats she would get. she would jump up, in an intricate dance, her toenails striking the hard wood floors in exclamation of her joy. You would throw a handful of dog food on the floor, watching the little pebbles of canine delight scatter, then she would run after them eating them up, following the trail, in a scene reminiscent of a Pacman game.

I almost lost her last spring and summer, she had bad diarrhea, and wouldn't eat. However, once we finally figured out she had whip worms, I was able to get her treated, and she returned to normal, and things were good.

Today, the cheeky little bugger broke my heart, as I was forced to hold her, while the injection carried her spirit away. The last month and a half or so, she has been vomiting. I thought it may be the worms again, and got more medicine for her, and in the three weeks since the medication, no puking...however, her appetite grew less and less..., last night she ate, but could not keep it down at all...and today did not eat at all, save for a cheeseburger, which I gave her prior to the vet visit, just in case.

The vet found a mass in her abdomen. He said it could either be a blockage (but he doubted that as there was no fever), or it could be a tumour. Either way it would cost thousands of dollars to check, and to treat, which I don't have...but he said it wouldn't make a difference for her anyway. She was not going to recover in his opinion, so I gave the ok...and at approximately 1600 Pacific time, she went to sleep in my arms, and I kissed her furry nose farewell, and then abandon her body, as I have no place to bury her. Good night, Phoebe. I love you.

Amergin, I am so very sorry, and will remember you in my prayers. I too have lost several pets over the years, and the grief is terrible. Please think as much as possible of the happy life Phoebe spent with you, and the unconditional love you gave her. How lucky she was to have found you. God bless you.

Deepest sympathy - having had to do this, it is one of the most difficult things to bear, even knowing that it is inevitable and that it is the best thing for your animal companion. They fill a special place in our hearts. (My old hound dog, Missie, played the "Pacman" game as well - with popcorn, her absolute all time favorite). It sounds like she had a wonderful life with you.

My condolences, and though it might seem difficult right now, congratulations to your vet. The prospect of surgery for your pooch would have reduced her quality of life; to deal with that after being ill, the prolonging of her life would not have been a humane option, even if it might have spared your heart a little. I think you would have found that you were already mourning her potential loss, during the surgical phase and in the face of her increasing discomfort.

You made the right choice, for both of you, as difficult as it was.

SRS

Short of losing a close relative, I don't know of anything more heartbreaking than having your dog put down. I've had to do it twice and the wrench was awful.

Just try and remember the good times.

Subject: ADD: The House Dog's Grave (Robinson Jeffers)-poem
From: Joe Offer

I found "The House Dog's Grave" here (click):

The House Dog's Grave (Haig, an English bulldog)

I've changed my ways a little; I cannot now
Run with you in the evenings along the shore,
Except in a kind of dream; and you, if you dream a moment,
      You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door
Where I used to scratch to go out or in,
And you'd soon open; leave on the kitchen floor
      The marks of my drinking-pan.

I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do
      On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no, all the night through
      I lie alone.

But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet
Outside your window where firelight so often plays,
And where you sit to read--and I fear often grieving for me--
Every night your lamplight lies on my place.

You, man and woman, live so long, it is hard
To think of you ever dying
A little dog would get tired, living so long.
I hope than when you are lying

Under the ground like me your lives will appear
As good and joyful as mine.
No, dear, that's too much hope: you are not so well cared for
      As I have been.

And never have known the passionate undivided
      Fidelities that I knew.
Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided. . . .
But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,
I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.

      Robinson Jeffers, 1941

Hey gnu!

How come you knew the name of the cat I had put down just before Christmas! Blind and she hated being in the house. I kept expecting to find her spattered in the middle of road, especially as she'd lost her sense of direction. You never realise how much you'll miss them.

There is no greater love than to let the creature you love leave in peace when the time is right, with you there showing your love. I would have to stop and count the number of times, for my own and those of others who could not be there. Doing the right thing is not always easy, but not doing the right thing is harder - for always. After ten or so years the pain is less but we always miss the wonderful creatures who enrich our lives for the time we are given with them. You too will heal. Remember the love and let it fill you with joy. How fortunate you were to experience that love.

Last week I went out and found that the little black chook who had such a strong personality and survived several dog maulings had jumped up in her usual manner on top of a heavy garden shredder and overbalanced, pulling it down on top of her. It was quick. I never liked chooks as a kid, but this one was different, she had imprinted on a dog which thought it was human.

Hi Amergin

My heartfelt condolences having just gone through the same with our elderly cat. A week later we are still hurting.
These guys play such a huge part in our daily lives and then leave such an empty hole.

Let that hole be filled with happy memories of the love and companionship you were allowed to share together over the years.

I truly grieve with you. I've been there - had to do the same thing with my dear cat Tiger in 2004 and I still miss him every day. His brother Bubba is still with me (he'll be twenty in June) and I dread the day that I may have to do the same thing with him.

The love we get from (and give to) our critters can never be adequately put into words. But, as others have said, try and find some comfort in the good years you had together.

Aw damn Gin........I am so sorry. I wish I had some magic words but there are none. When we put Sissy down last August, I held her muzzle in my hand and looked into her eyes as that wonderful spirit left her. Now one of my sustaining memories is that the last thing she saw or smelled with that Weimaraner nose was me.

I share you pain today and look forward to the time we can both enjoy the great memories of wonderful dogs.

Thank you, everyone....this wonderful place is always a good source of comfort...when she passed, her eyes remained slightly opened...as they would when she slept....

I miss her dancing when it was time to eat...she would jump up, big smile on her face, and twirl around in a circle. or the cheeky grin she would get as if she was getting away with a crime, when she would pick up a paper dish with some scraps of canned catfood, and carry it outside...or the time when she got too fat...I threw some goodies on the floor and she did her pacman bit...but scooted herself along, butt never leaving the ground...or when you had a treat in your hand...and she suddenly jumped up to grab it from your fingers...and sometimes carrying a bit of skin with her as well...very reminiscent of a shark flying from the sea....and most funny, yet irritating, was her habit of sniffing every blade of grass, every flower, every leave, every pebble, while we went on our walkies...I miss her very much, and making the decision to send her soul home was hard...the second time I have had to make it...and while I am grateful for the love, the companionship, the joy...it is not a decision I will ever make again. I can't do it. I love these buggers too damn much...and so while my life may be emptier without them, I will in the lonbg run save myself this pain.

We lost a collie to and only lasted 2-1/2 months before we got two more from a rescue. My OH said walking is just not the same without a dog.

They just dont live as long as us.

And, thanks for saying she smiled, my collie smiles though I seem to be the only one who can see it !

My deepest and sincere condolence to you and your family my dear friend. Nothing hurts so much .. nothing.   Every time it happened to me it broke my heart.   I have an old wiener dog that is so old he can barely get around anymore. I know very soon I will be facing the same thing and I will have a major meltdown. My dog goes everywhere with me even to work and the store ... Nothing hurts more

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures. Lord we bring you our grief in the loss of dog and ask for courage to bear it. We bring you our thanks for our friend who lived among us and gave us freely of his love. We commit our friend and companion into your loving hands. Give us the eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and how every living thing speaks to us of your love - forever. Amen.

My 13 year old collie had been a bit "off" since being on heat a few weeks ago and last monday she really got sick and I thought I'd loose her. After a couple of vet visits and some antibiotics she seems to be improving but it really makes you realise how much you rely on them. I'm dreading the time when it comes but it's the price you pay.

It is worth it. When all the horrible things are happening 'out there' your pet never changes the way it feels about you which is the wonderful thing of having a dog or a cat. It hurts, then all the good memories come back.

Some years ago I had to have my old cat 'Sam' put to sleep. He had a bad heart and could hardly walk. The Vet said it was for the best. My husband buried him in our garden, down near the field where he always roamed. I thought my heart would break. Now we've moved house, and I'm so sad that he lies there alone and not here with us in the garden of this new house. I only hope his spirit is at peace. He was my 'best' cat ever. I still can't quite look at photos of him without welling up. But I did my best for him. The Vet. practice sent a condolence card later, it had a picture of a Siamese cat and the words 'I loved you so, 'twas heaven here with you, but the call came and I could not stay.' It did comfort me, but a lost loved one can never be forgotten, whether it's a pet or a person. Does anyone believe that we meet our loved animals again in the 'next world'? Hope so!
