It's a Playford tune, also called The Twenty Ninth of May.

Random selection from Google comes up wiuth www.eastleighfolkdance.org/MainlyPlayford.pdf for example, which contains the tune, alodn with a lot of other gems "Mostly Playford" as the name says.

It's also in Mike Raven's big book and any other Playfod collection.
Lovely tune! I've been learning it recently.

Well, the tune I'm thinking of is is not the one Runrig Fan linked to, but it is the same one Gargoyle refers to and I'm pretty sure that's the one that's used as a morris tune.

There are in fact 2 tunes often used with this hymn: one is "29th May" as already mentioned,which is also a Playford dance; other, in melody edition of Songs Of Praise OUP 1936 called 'Royal Oak'.

As it's in the repertoire of hymns I go through each weekend, I can add that, in Hymns Ancient and Modern, one of the tunes is by W. H. Monk (1823-89), with lyrics by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-95).

Cyber Hymnal has three tunes listed for "All Things Bright and Beautiful." The one they (annoyingly) play in the background is ROYAL OAK, by Martin F. Shaw, so I suppose they deem that the most common tune (and I'd agree). The second tune they give is titled BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL, by William H. Monk. the third tune is GERALD, by Ludwig Spohr, 1834.
Cyber Hymnal says the lyrics are by Cecil F. Alexander, published in 1848.

This page has the melody for "The Twenty-Ninth of May." I can see how that would fit "All Things Bright and Beautiful" very well.

But this plethora of melodies has made it impossible for me to learn this song. Every time I try to sing it, I switch melodies midstream. Oh, the agony of it!

Here I found the tune and some explanation about May 29. But the text does not tell us about the relationship to the hymn of 1848. Who can enlighten me?

Royal Oak is in fact close to the 29th of May as published in Playford. The first eight bars are Playford's first four bars repeated with a some difference in bars four and eight (to accommodate the words). The remainder of the tune is reasonably close to the Playford version but does differ. I notice that in the Cyberhymnal, "Royal Oak" is credited as "17th Century English Tune, arranged Martin Shaw".

You can check the actual Playford version from the link given by treewind. It's no. 155 in their set of tunes.

The version of the 29th of May that Joe Offer linked to differs somewhat from the version in Playford but is recognisably a version of the same tune.

William Monk's tune (which is the one I remember from my childhood) could also have been based on 29th of May, especially if we bear in mind that these tunes would naturally have varied over time.

I had never come across the "29th of May" / "All Things Bright and Beautiful" link before.

In Grishkas link, The Fiddlers Companion says There is a "29th of May" in the music manuscript of John Winder (1789, Wyresdale, Lancashire), although the tune is that of "When the King Enjoys His Own Again." which is the one I knew. It then gives a list of references starting with Bacon (The Morris Ring), 1974. There doesn't seem to be a "When the King Enjoys His Own Again." in Bacon but there is "The Twenty-Ninth of May" -

which I can't get to sound like either of the others.

Incidentally, my Grammar school, founded 1666, always used to celebrate Oak Apple Day on 29th May. Whether it still does since it became a comprehensive, I don't know.

I'm not the world's best ABC sight reader, but I recognise that morris tune also sung to the words "Oh dear Mother what a fool I've been/six young lads came a-courting me"...etc. and used for an Adderbury Stick dance.

Not the same tune, but of course there might be all sorts of reasons for calling a tune The Twenty Ninth of May.

I suspect the confusion with "The King Enjoys His Own Again/World Turned Upside Down" is down to somebody simply misremembering which tune was which, not anything more academically interesting. The last two bars of each half of the tune are slightly similar, but IMHO they are not the same tune.
