While we've had numerous threads discussing how to cook stuff, we've mostly explored each other's favorites.

Google has now added a "Recipe" button on search results pages that I probably wouldn't have explored without the "news clip" pointing it out:

Google Recipe View: Recipe surfers' new best friend

By Wilson Rothman

If you're an avid but impatient cook like me, you probably browse multiple recipes online, and then mash 'em up when you're in the kitchen. Consulting multiple recipes is almost always beneficial, but it can be annoying. Google's new Recipe View helps in that department.
It's exactly what you think it is: A search tab that restricts results to recipes.

Type any dish or ingredient, then tap the "Recipes" tab on the lefthand side. Once you're in, there are more controls. You can limit the ingredients you want to use, the cook time, even the calorie count of the dish itself.

[end Link quote]

For a "quick view" there's an embedded brief video at the link that may (or not) be helpful.

The "filter" to eliminate search results that are not recipes seems to work pretty well, but if Google doesnt' recognize your search term as "food" you may have to click "more" to get to that particular choice in the box in the left margin. (It didn't recognize "possum" as food but did offer some tasty(?) recipes after I expanded the list of categories.)

Additonal thought: My need for recipes doesn't go much past three steps, (1. Kill it, 2. Burn it, 3. Serve it) but just noting the presence of the several other "filter choices" may be of some help to Googlers on other subjects as well.

Comments?

John

I don't have that search tab option available on my Google page - anyone else?

If you do a search for "something that might be food" the clicky for "Recipes" should show in the sidebar (left side in my browser).

If Google doesn't recognize your search term as an edible (as for my search for "possum") the box where it would be may not show it, but there's a "More" button at the bottom of the box. If you click "More" the box should expand to show it.

If your search term is for something that couldn't possibly be eaten (perhaps like and ingredient for some English "semifoods?" - e.g. marmite?) the Recipes button may not show up no matter what you do, I suppose.

Also, although the announcement didn't mention any browser compatibility factors, it came up immediately in IE, but I can't vouch for other browsers.

In my browser, the box is directly under the big "Google" logo, and the top item is "Everything."

And for marmite you do have to click "more" at the bottom of the box to get the "Recipes filter, implying that it's no more edible than possum I guess."

Nah, John don't get it - not even with macaroni and cheese - the all American foodstuff - as my search item.

Just tried "macaroni" on its own (UK, using Firefox) and recipes came up, including macaroni & cheese. Maybe you just gave it too much information, bobad?

Now if they can just get it to read my mind for what I fancy eating they could really have something.

Don't get it with "macaroni" on it's own either - maybe it just hasn't been made available in my area yet - will keep checking.
