Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Stu Date: 11 Mar 11 - 05:26 AM Chances are Mike the tsunami will pass under your friend's ship unnoticed if it's in the open ocean. These waves will travel at around 500mph (the speed of a 747) but they travel throughout the water column and are often less than a metre high in deep ocean. It's as the seabed shallows near the coast the problem occurs as all that water travelling at that speed is squeezed upwards and pushes the front of the wave. |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Richie Black (misused acct, bad email) Date: 11 Mar 11 - 05:33 AM Tsunami wave estimated higher than some Pacific islands. God help these people. |

Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Will Fly Date: 11 Mar 11 - 06:03 AM I've just been looking at the latest live BBC News footage - the tsunami's an incredible sight. What was doubly horrible was the amount of huge, solid debris being carried along by the mass of water - boats, trucks, buildings - nothing could withstand it. It looked like a huge sludge tide, moving implacably across the flat landscape. |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: GUEST,mg Date: 11 Mar 11 - 07:10 AM it is 4 a.m. and I am evacuating by foot. Say a 1 to 10 foot tide might arrive. I have a 2 story windmill so should be OK but they said to leave so I will. mg |

Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 11 Mar 11 - 08:07 AM earthquake & tsunami photos video & more photos Pacific-wide tsunami warning in effect A tsunami warning has been issued for the entire Pacific basin except the mainland United States and Canada following a huge earthquake that hit Japan, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said. The warning includes Hawaii and extends from Mexico to South American countries on the Pacific. Among those for which a tsunami warning is in effect are: Russia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Australia and New Zealand, which had been on an initial warning list, were later removed. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed there was no tsunami threat. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies warned the tsunami is currently higher than some Pacific islands which it could wash over. The quake off Japan's north-east coast was the biggest in 140 years and triggered tsunami waves that swept across farmland, sweeping away homes, crops, vehicles and triggering fires. Taiwan evacuated its east coast which is not heavily populated. Waves of about 50 centimetres high have reached the island but has caused little damage, its central weather bureau said. Hawaii's civil defence agency ordered all coastal areas, including the main tourist hub Honolulu, evacuated by 2:00am local time. The first tsunami wave was expected to reach Hawaii an hour later. Waves were expected to hit Pacific island of Guam, 2,400 kilometres south of Japan, at 7:00pm local time. Beaches had been cleared and hotels were moving guests to rooms on higher floors, while in the nearby Northern Mariana Islands all residents were ordered to evacuate to higher ground. The first tsunami waves have reached the Kuril Islands chain, prompting Russia to evacuate 11,000 people, officials said. A one-metre wave hit Shikotan Island, while a 95-centimetre wave hit Kunashir Island, a representative of the Sakhalin Tsunami Centre said. |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: SINSULL Date: 11 Mar 11 - 08:28 AM Hope the Alaska contingent is safe. Brett and Wakana are high enough up not to have to evacuate but they can't contact her family who live in the quake area. Do what you have to do to stay safe Mary. |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Deckman Date: 11 Mar 11 - 08:35 AM About"guest mg" post. That's Mary and she lives and works on "Long Beach", Washington. I know the region and I know Mary. She's a VERY SMART LADY She knows exactly what she's doing. Her area has a very good Tidal Wave Warning system. She works with scientists who also have their "act together." If anyone can take care of herself, it's Mary. I'm posting this to alleviate any extreme fears that MudCatters might have. bob nelson |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Deckman Date: 11 Mar 11 - 08:37 AM I am monitoring the wave's progress. I expect we'll know in about another hour and a half if the wave arrives ... I'll keep the situation posted. bob nelson |

Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Deckman Date: 11 Mar 11 - 11:16 AM It appears that a major tidal wave event did NOT hit the Washington/Oregon coast. I emphisis that this is still to early to declare everything O.K., but it looks pretty promising. bob nelson |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Brian May Date: 11 Mar 11 - 11:31 AM Best of luck to all those poor souls affected by yet another natural disaster. Makes the sardonic part of me smile, in so many countries, they're ripping themselves apart, man on man, religion upon religion, politics on politics and so on. Then once in a while, Nature comes along and shows us just what 'she' can do. Not all 'organic' things are good for you. You are all in my thoughts . . . |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Ebbie Date: 11 Mar 11 - 11:43 AM I just talked with a friend of mine whose wife and daughter are in central Tokyo. He talked with them last night- in fact, was on the phone with Hizuko when the earthquake hit and her phone went dead. Later he talked with them on Skype. They are fine. Their 8-yeer-old daughter was in school at the time (about 3:00 in the afternoon) and she enjoyed the experience. She said the children got to talk with each other under a blanket. :) John said he told his wife to just get on the plane and come home. He himself just got home last week and as he said, he'd rather be there. |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Brian May Date: 11 Mar 11 - 12:50 PM Yes, my wife, daughter and new grand daughter are in Christchurch. I'd rather be there than here in UK, so I understand your friends viewpoint. Take care all and best wishes to everyone affected. |

Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: JohnInKansas Date: 11 Mar 11 - 01:29 PM The tsunami was reported as having passed Hawaii with little effect, although that was based on TV news coverage and may not be a complete assessment. One commenter (of unknown intelligence) suggested that the wave could spread some laterally to flow around the islands, but the effect may be different when it hits the continent with no place to go but inland. It should be somewhat attenuated just by the distance by the time it gets to the coast though. Our morning newscasts are over, and they don't seem inclined to interrupt the game shows and judge x, judge y, and judge z bully-pulpit shows, so we'll hear the details in about 6 hours at the next scheduled news breaks. Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: GUEST,mg Date: 11 Mar 11 - 01:40 PM Hi..I am back at work..10:30 PST...we saw some good waves from a high hill but nothing extraordinary. We met at the local high school in Ilwaco. It was quite comfortable as those things go, and for sure they could accomodate hundreds of homeless people in old school as minimal shelter at least if they had to so what is the holdup? Anyway, everything is fine here. Some great radio announcing from KMUN in Astoria as usual. We have a tsumani alarm system and it did not go off at least where I live. But the sheriff's office did send out phone calls. And the radio alarm went off..around midnight they said it was just a watch or whatever..just stay off the beach but they upgraded it. I have not seen videos yet of Japan but I am sure it is awful. Now, does everyone have emergency water, food, blankets, toilet paper, tools, tarps in their car? mg |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Little Robyn Date: 11 Mar 11 - 01:49 PM Waves of 15-20cm have just started hitting the northern tip of NZ. It's nothing like the waves in Japan but people have been told to stay away from the beaches as they could be sucked out to sea as the waves retreat. Robyn |
Subject: RE: Tsumani warning in effect now..Japan E.Q From: Donuel Date: 11 Mar 11 - 07:28 PM The scenes I've witnessed of Japan are more horrific than many scenes from the movie 2012. The ring of fire is angry. This month New Zealand Hawaii and Japan are indications of Earth's tectonic process of bumping and grinding as our rafts of land float about atop a sea of magma. |
Subject: RE: Tsunami warning in effect now..Japan earthquake From: OldPossum Date: 12 Mar 11 - 01:46 PM I hope our Japanese mudcat member Masato Sakurai is OK. I send my best wishes to everyone affected by this disaster. |
