For electric gigs: Yamaha WX5 wind controller Yamaha VL70-m tone generator Roland XV-2020 synth module Data and power and sound cables to hook up to the PA Any music I'm not confident about remembering A vitally important sheet reminding me which patches to use for each song. The latter set's getting sold later this year though, I want to concentrate on other things and it's worth a fair bit of money. |

Any time I'm doing any serious playing I take my emergency toolkit which contains an assortment of screwdrivers, various tools for unsticking and tuning harmonica reeds, spare bridge pins & bridge pin remover, plus a nail file in case of breakages. Every single one of these things has saved a gig at least once! For plugged-in gigs I have a big silver case with stuff like leads, spare batteries + power supply, various preamps, EQ & switching pedals, plus a spare DI boxes for those occasions where our 4-piece band with 7 instruments between us turns up to find a couple of mics and a DI box because someone didn't know the difference between "acoustic" and "solo singer/guitarist". ;-) |

In it... at least four ciapans and four tin whistles, one Marine Band harp, one Jew's Harp (is that the correct term these days?), one Rhan, a blow dryer, and about one hundred sheets of lyrics of trad songs and jokes (and, YEARS ago, one plastic baggie). The last time I picked it up, at least a half dozen years ago, I moved it several feet to a position in front of the fireplace. It's dusty. |

The TPs are amazing. Altoid's box w/flatpicks, finger/thumb picks, Schubb capo, bridge pins, 9v battery. Tuner w/2' cord, Kyser capo, 15' guitar cord, soundhole cover, strings, small side-cutters, string-winder, Leatherman multi-tool. That's in my 6 string bag as my mandolin, 12-string, bass and autoharp all have some variation or duplicate except for the Leatherman. |

If it's the fiddle case, I dispense with the wire cutter, screw driver, capp and picks and carry instead a cake of rosin and a shoulder rest. I guess I travel fairly lightly. |

One of the others usually has gum, another has the large-print lyrics handouts we use during hour-long shows at retirement residences. When I first joined the quartet I also brought the whole assortment of sheet music in case I needed to check on something while warming up, but we don't use sheet music or lyrics 'on stage'. More than once someone has made up words to rhyme with my mistake! I barely have time to keep basic instrument skills alive, never mind performance-ready. But I keep the usual pliers, spare strings, capo & picks in my guitar & banjo cases; rosin & spare strings in cello case. Tuning fork in guitar case or pocket. |

One or two, but audiences tend to deal with them themselves, in folk anyway. The worst I ever had was a nine-year-old girl at a wodland gig who just wouldn't shut up - everything I said she had a come back, so I ended up making part of the act. I reckon that kid's going to be about 19 now and a better storyteller than I'll ever be! There's always one, as they say, which isn't strictly true but it's good to have a lively audience to bounce off, at least it is with storytelling anyway. Here's a thing though, why can I only get my .009s up to D on my citera? Same scale length as Rapunzel's Purple Heart Daisy Rock but if I push it up to E they just snap. Wierd or what? |

The bag on its own weighs more than the guitar on its own. |

Hmm, more stuff than I expected. Outside pocket: Two sets of guitar strings (one new, one used), clip-on tuner with duct tape in place of battery compartment lid, blister pack of tuner batteries, nine volt battery, guitar strap, another Kyser Capo (Susan B Komen pink), dental floss, small screwdriver with interchangeable plus and minus tips, more flat picks (assorted stiffness, colors and advertisers), three small spring clamps, and tune book. From: Desert Dancer Date: 23 Mar 11 - 09:04 PM Used to be just: dance cards full water bottle and in the pocket of the bag that holds the box that holds the index cards: name badge pen pencil tin of pastilles (candies to moisten mouth) dance tokens (not used at gig, just live with the cards -- used for visualizing how a dance works) Human-a-tone nose flute (because it's small) notepad a couple of tissues tampon Nowadays, I add: Shure wireless headset mic set And sometimes (if I'm not in too much of a rush getting out the door): folding barstool-height chair - standing for 3+ hours is not as fun as it once was, but I like to be "up" at standing height Mac laptop computer with dance database + extension cord This last I've carried a few times, but I'm finding it more trouble than it's worth. "Callers Companion" database software is nice for setting up a set list and displaying each dance in a large font (now that my eyesight is reaching that stage...). But, if the program needs to change on the fly (which it often does), the cards are much easier to shuffle through to find what I want. If I called more often, and had more of the database in my head, then maybe I could pull them up quickly enough from the computer. No need for a gig bag, except for the music sheets, and the bottle of rum! No need for amplification nonsense, mine are rated at '3 guitars' , '4 guitars' etc - the number of other players I can drown out! The accordion player never has to worry about spares, etc - if anything breaks, or even better, IF IT GOES OUT OF TUNE!!!, you just take it to 'The Man' .... :-) Which means that, of course, it something happens on the night, you can't play - stop cheering! I know your names! And I can find out where you live ... so, you need a 'backup machine'. And if you use as your main instrument one that is not a 120 bass, but a smaller folk size with limited range, then since some damn capo addicted guitar plucker will probably want to play in same damn weird key like F# minor... so you need more than one backup machine.. From: Leadfingers Date: 23 Mar 11 - 07:44 PM IF I am doing a Serious P A Gig , the Gig Bag is a Fully Loaded Hatchback car with Amp . 16 Channel mixer , Four speakers and stands , a Pilots bag with leads , Connectors , Soldering iron , Multi meter . various mains adaptors etc , and spare Microphones . Instruments in Calton Cases which carry the strings , tuners , etc , with the instrumentation depndant on what the gig is . If its a Folk Club or session , just the Guitar or Banjola and the mandolin , which has the whistles in the case . |

When I was a full-time street performer, and breaking strings regularly, I formed the habit of keeping my previously used strings as spares. My most-recent set normally included only five (or fewer) intact strings, so I was always sure to have a spare replacement for every string by keeping strings from older sets as well. Nowadays I replace sets of strings before ever breaking any, but still maintain the habit of keeping a used set of strings in the guitar case for emergency replacements. If I have any brand-new strings, they stay at home, where I will install them when I'm good and ready. |

I used to carry a harmonica around, years ago, with the intention of learning to play it, but never used it except as a tuner, or to lend to someone else to play along with me. So... Manila folder of songsheets (lyrics) Tuner Capo Picks (one plastic thumbpick, two steel fingerpicks, in small pill bottle) Spare picks (a thumbpick will occasionally break; fingerpicks are essentially indestructible, but can get lost) Slide (glass, open at both ends, rarely used these days) Block of violin rosin The rosin helps prevent picks from slipping off fingers. When I am playing every day and constantly "in practice," this is not a problem, but if I'm even just a little bit "rusty" and subject to the least bit of nervousness and tension, a finger will slip and its pick will fly off in mid-performance, often landing inside the soundbox, which is an annoyance and interruption, or on the ground/floor, which can be even worse if it can't be readily found. I scrape the rosin block with each pick, and rub the powder on the picks and fingertips, where they touch each other. Never fails to keep the picks in place. This is something I learned at Mudcat, of course. Back in the 60s-70s, my glass slide was a Corecidin (sp?) pill bottle, and I was able to store my fingertips in it. I didn't keep the bottletop, but my thumbpick sorta snapped over the lip of the top opening and served to keep the fingerpicks safely enclosed. During a period of not-playing-very-much, I lost track of the slide/bottle. Now I have a slide that's not a bottle, and a separate little aspirin bottle for the picks. If you're not a fingerpicker, you may not realize how attached a player can be to a particular set/pair of picks. A considerable amount of time and effort goes into fitting each one to the tip of a particular finger. My middle-finger pick dates back to at least 1972, maybe earlier. I lost its mate in (I think) the late 80s and went through several index-finger picks until settling on the current one sometime late in the last century. |

If I am gonna stay overnight, I use underwear, socks and a t-shirt to fit where they can. In the box thingy which I have just perused goes extra picks of varying bendablenesses, capo, tuner, strings, Fast fret, an old shopping list with cashews underlined three times, bottle neck, string winder and wire cutters (snips). |

SO... when going to a session, I try to keep it to the essentials. In my gig bag I have: -guitar (picks are in attached pick holder so techinically part if the guitar -spare strings -harmonicas in various keys -harmonica rack, -guitar tuner, -song books/notes, -pub prob (see other post on Mudcat for the latter) Yikes, looks like too much when I write it down but everthing is used on a typical night (well maybe 4 of the 7 harmonicas). |
