Well, first of all, when I was a teenager this was "mah magazine"... And then it became "Hot VW's" and then it became "The Geritol Gazette" but...

never mind that...

So I'm at the local Food Lion a couple weeks ago and I'm always lookin' at the covers of the magazines and it's usually that same dozen women's pictures with their ****s hangin' out and, hey, I like that but I ain't gonna go buying that stuff...

So here I look down and there was a mag with this picture of this boss looking beater of an old Desoto station wagon from the early 50s and it was "Hot Rod" magazine so I plunked down my 5 bucks and...

...Sheet fire... I been readin' on it and it's GREAT!!! I mean, it's like I never got over being a gear-headed teenager and, hey, I might ever get me a subscription just to drool over them cars...

Any other aging gear-heads out there reading "Hot Rod" magazine 'er should I have just never hit the "submit' button???

LOL...

B~

Bobert, I had a hot rod when I was a teenager but it's kinda personal and, well, I better not talk about it. Devoting a whole magazine to it, well, isn't "Hustler" enough?

I used to love that mag. I had it and Pop Mechs delivered to me at school.

You and me, Richard...

Yup, Popular Mechanics was the shits!!!

Sorry, Rap... There were gear-heads and then there were ***gear-heads***... I lived for Hot Rod magazine... I had over a hundred model cars in my room by the time I was like 12... Built and painted and customized 'um all... Then when I was 13 or 14 my dad bought me a complete Craftsman tool set and box and I began working on junk cars that I bought for like $20 and had a drive way filled with 'um... Got most to run and would sell them and get other ones... By the time I was 15 I was building engines for the older kids...

I donno... Most kids were into other stuff but I couldn't get enough...

Then when I became 15 and had a license I got this opportunity to drag race an AC Cobra for Ford Motor Company... Long story... But by then I was not only a gear-head but a gear-jammer...

Love Hot Rods...

B~

My bro turned me onto car mags. He used to get a bunch of them and I got em when he had read them. I'll never forget when he arrived home after being in Germany (RCAF). He pulled up in a metal flake candy red Bug... mag wheels, Abarth muflers, Pirelli tires, Porche engine...

Never had a hot rod. No money until I gradgiated and then it was only 4X4 pickups fer me. The slower the better.

Much to my parent's chagrin, I was a gearhead with gasoline for blood. I subscribed to over half a dozen rags and scanned a few more for years. For the midwestern racer in me though, there was one which stood above all the rest and which sadly published its last issue just the other day................

National Speed Sport News has been around since the depression and one of the early writers became the editor 20 years later. Chris Economaki WAS the voice of racing in America and he interviewed the biggest drivers and owners from Indycars to NASCAR to Formula One.....and right on down to the guy who spent his last dime to get his jalopy racer to the local dirt track every weekend. Many careers advanced just by their mention in NSSN. If you wanted to know what was going on, this was the place to find out.

NSSN remains in an online form but for a lot of us old racers, it just isn't the same nor is it the same without the old man himself. It was inevitable of course but it also is like a death in the family and I shall miss it.

I'd like to think that I have one more hot rod in me... I've always loved the '50 Ford coupes... My buddy, Garland Williams, had a '49 4 door in high school that was a strong running car ut I like the 50's and really don't need the "4 door look"...

But it's gotta have a flat-head-8 and 2 deuces, 3 on the tree with 411 rear and overdrive...

Something you gearheads might appreciate -- an electric powered 1972 Datsun dragster leaving the gaz guzzlers in the dust:

Kind of surprised they can get a "power cord" long enough.
