I need help. I need the lyrics to a song ent. The Minstrel Boy. The lyrics that are in the dB are not the ones I'm looking for...I know the chorus to it; also last verse...need the rest...help is most appreciated.

CHORUS:
I am not a soldier, I am just a minstrel boy
And my duty to this army is to sing them songs of joy,
Keep their hearts in the battle, keep their minds from the fray,
And I'm not afraid to die today.

LAST VERSE:
Now my harp is broken and my flute lies torn in two,
And my duty to this army is through.
There'll be no more songs of laughter, no more songs of victory,
And I am afraid to die today.

Thanks much for any help; please fwd and replies to bastiansancet@hotmail.com

P.S.: for any of you that are Trimarians that attended TMT last year, Greetings; Lady Jane, please email me.

In my "Folk Songs of England, Scotland & Ireland" it's:

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death, you'll find him;
His father's sword he has girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him.

"Land of song, said the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the word betrays thee,
"One sword at least thy rights shall guard,
"One faithful heart shall praise thee."

The minstrel fell, but the foeman's chain
Could not bring his proud soul under;
The harp he loved ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder,

And said, "No chain shall sully thee,
"Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
"Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
"They ne'er shall sound in Slavery!"

Hope this helps Mert

I assume Bastian's has a different tune since his lyrics don't scan to the "Minstrel Boy" that most of us know. If this thread vanishes from sight, Bastian, I's suggest starting another with the header "Different Minstrel Boy" to get people's attention. I'd guess most people will see the header on this one and not bother to check since they figure you want the familiar one that's in the database.
Blessings,
Barbara

MINSTREL BOY
( The Minstrels of Mayhem - Jerry Barry, Ty Billings ©1993 )

Well, I'll sing to the morning,
And I'll sing through the night,
And I'll sing to the swiftness of our swords,
And I'll pray for the comrades to stand strong before the fight,
As they all march on so bravely off to war.

Our minds are on our sweethearts,
Our thoughts are with our friends,
In our hearts we feel so empty and alone.
And we think about our families, shall we ne'er see them again,
And we dream about the day that we'll go home.

Chorus:

For I am not a soldier, I am just a minstrel boy,
And my duty to this army is to sing them songs of joy.
To keep their hearts in the battle,
To keep their minds from the fray,
And I'm not afraid to die, today.

And I see their burdens lighten,
I see their spirits lift
As I sing them songs of battles won before,
And I feel their muscles tighten and I sense their feelings shift,
As they strive on to the struggle that's in store.

Well, the battle rages onward,
The fighting has begun,
And the men they show no mercy and no fear.
Now the darkness it surrounds us as the clouds pass o'er the sun,
And in my death the minutes pass like years.

Chorus
Instrumental break
Chorus

And so now my strings are broken,
And my lute is torn in two,
And my honor and my duty to this army now are through.
There'll be no more songs of laughter, no more time to sit and play,
And I am afraid to die, today.

Yeah, I figured when this request was originally made that this was a song based on the Thomas Moore song that is so well known by the Irish around the world. Joe Offer seems to think that it hasn't been answered, but I believe it has. Thanks for posting it, MMario. I will look for a recording.

Mick

Dang! Joe Offer, proven wrong again. Still, it's a good excuse to bring this song into view again.
