Joe, Pete Coe and Pete Morton are very definitely English, and also very different individuals! And both have songwriting styles which are also very idiosyncratic and not American. Had you perhaps supped freely of fine ale at Whitby?

Mind you, I saw him perform only once at Whitby, in 2002, back when I was young and cute. And I'm an old man now and my memory's imperfect - but I THINK it was Pete Coe and I thought he was English, but he sounded very American to me. I loved that recording you linked to, Freddy. The Irish performers I was hearing about the same time also sounded American - singing country music with a twang.

Nobody's trying to be American these days. We've lost whatever good reputation we had.

I quite often hear if in him Joe.
It not always the case but this one shows him sounding Americanised to me.
I couldn't explain it but I think his delivery style sounds American too.

That sounds strange to me, Joe. I always think of Pete as an arche-typal English performer.
You may have been sitting behind me at that concert in Whitby. You certainly were at one Whitby concert.

Pete and his partner Victoria now have a baby son, Arthur Leon Peter born a couple of days ago and weighing in at 8lb 3oz. There are quite a lot of messages on Pete's Facebook page - congratulations to them both. Expect some great new songs !
