Hi Daizee - people here will tell you all about folk.
When they have finished, some different people here will tell you the exact opposite and tell you THAT is all about folk.
Sometimes they will start to argue amongst themselves - just keep out of the line of fire.
There are some regulars who are very helpful and some who know a lot. There are also some individuals who are grumpy and unhelpful.

Most of us are friendly, so if you meet one who is spoiling for a fight, do not assume that the rest of us are similar.

Arthur - many thanks for the link to Sammy's bar. Quite a good version. But more thanks because on the same page there is a version by Lonnie Donegan. I had not heard this before. Also there is a clip of Bob Williamson singing it. We had Bob many times as a guest...way back when. Always good for a chuckle and INHO very much under-rated.

AaaH Memory Lane is a wonderful place....

So you see Daizee there is always something to find of interest here.

As Geoff The Duck said, you'll find lots of people here willing to tell you "all about folk" and then lots more willing to tell you "the exact opposite about folk".

Best thing is to get out there and listen to lots of it. Not sure whether you're in the UK, the USA or somewhere else, but wherever you are you're almost sure to be near some venues where you can go and listen to folk-type music in intimate environments.

I have a choice of 3 tonight: the back room of a pub within walking distance where I may be one of perhaps 6, maximum 10 people all playing and singing, going around the room and doing a song each, mainly "trad folk"; or a local folk club 10 minutes drive away where a couple of talented girls "The Askew Sisters" are playing for an audience, but with some audience members able to do "floor spots" before the main act comes on; or to a much bigger "singaround" about 25 minutes drive away where there'll be about 15-20 performers taking turns, and maybe half a dozen people just listening. At this one it's customary to join in if you know the song, or can work out an improvisation "on the fly".

I was unaware of the existence of any of these places 18 months ago, but since then have discovered so many "folky" venues (to different degrees of how you define "folk music"!) in the immediate area that I could easily go to a live music session every night of the month (except some Tuesdays, which are a bit "thin" for some reason).

I have a scanned copy of Cyril Tawney's original chords and lyrics sheet of Sammy's Bar when he wrote it. Cyril's wife kindly sent it to me.

Oh I might get my gonads choped for saying this but don't take any of it too seriously just go out and enjoy the music and interpret it as you will , join in where you want to and listen where you will, don't be phased by thoughts that one might not be good enough, that really is not what it's about, it really is about folk getting together and playing and singing together, simple really. Last night a girl sang a heavy metal song, apparently. She had a good strong voice, her own voice, I suggested she went away and listened to the likes of Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon and Maddy Prior and then come and give us her views.
Point is, sing songs you like, songs you comforatable with, the thing about a lot of "folk songs" is that they have stood the test of time and there has to be a reason for it.

I agree with most of the comments above, find your own way listen, listen, listen. And get to live venues, I prefer small get togethers rather than concerts.
We folkies seem to be united by our different tastes, but there is a common thread running through us all.

It would help to know where you are, within 100 miles would do, and a hint at your age group. We are not being nosey, honest it's just that then we can start pointing you in the right direction.

Loved the Video with Sammy's bar by the way and what a treat indeed to hear what Lonnie Donnigan did to it.

The worst of Mudcat is the crawling deference to an especially elite & dictatorial ownership, and the secret policing that goes on by way of moderation. Like many here I'm prepared to put up with that for the general crack, though the hearty friendliness is a bit of a put-on - I've seen great stuff here vanish without a trace through what might at first appear to be a conspiracy of silence, but is, in truth, down to a total lack of interest in anything that falls outside a very narrow band of interest. So less a community than an on-line club that knows its own mind and refuses to think outside of its particular box - hence the missionary zeal of some of the responses so far on this thread, and a few of those the links...

Over 50 years on and nothing has changed bar the audience sizes, the general demographic, the waistlines & styles. Most of them jumped ship years ago, whilst others clung doggedly on and evolved into Folkies. In all that time empires have come and gone, great singers have been born and died, entire musical movements have yeilded endless classics, bands have formed, changed the world and split up, we've had Mersey Beat, psychedelia, prog, punk, neo-punk, acid house, Madchester, the Hacienda, drum & bass, old school hip hop and grunge; Folk has reinvented and revived itself a dozen times at least with even my hip young neighbours playing Bellowhead in the watches of the night but in folk clubs the world over they'll still be singing Whip Jamboree as if the last 50 years haven't happened at all. That is the essence of Folk, and of Mudcat; it is ageing, unchanging, reactionary, righteous, curmudgeonly, and yet weirdly appealing all the same. Say The Spinners here and no one will think of Working My Way Back To You...

Never seen any fighting here though - a few heated exchanges maybe, as passions can & do run high, which is to be expected, but never anything by way of gratuitous verbal violence. Thing is, unlike other forums, Mudcatters are very traceable in the real world & our paths do tend to cross from time to time, by chance or design, which is always nice. After all, you never know who you're talking to...

Llantrisant Folk Club is one of the oldest and certainly best folk clubs in the UK. Just look at the guest list past and future.

Welcome, Daizee. A lot of the people on here are amazing performers. Andrew McKay (Crane Driver) and Carole Etherton (Sussex Carole) are sort of in your backyard (from a global perspective), and are, as one Mudcatter has remarked, "disgustingly talented". There's a thread on here somewhere about their new CD.

If someone gets snarky with you, just ignore them. It's happened to me on a couple of occasions, and the first time it really bothered me. I got over it when I realized that some people have very narrow viewpoints and too much time on their hands. As a couple of other people above have stated, browse and find what you like. There's lots to choose from.

Me? I'm a troll till I get my first coffee. By the time I have had my first beer, I'm everybody's best mate.

In the meantime, I find myself listening more and more to recent offerings by old faithfuls such as Vin Garbutt, Martin Simpson etc. Also seem to have recently bought just about everything Kate Rusby has recorded. Not to mention getting excited by the prolific turnout of Seth Lakeman and the wonderful mixing of old & new with the Imagined Village.

Although before my first coffee, I shout at my HiFi wondering why such a wonderful singer / guitarist as Dick Gaughan can be so wrong. (Chicken, when I meet him I am usually gushing with my praise. But being contrary is a good trait in a pre coffee troll.)

What is a Troll anyway? I'm assuming we're not talking those little plastic gonks with pink fluffy hair you used to buy in Norway back in the 60s? I have a few of those - including my 'Dam Things' Viking bought in Nyborg (nr Bergen) circa 1969.

Recently Max branded someone a Troll for daring to ask why he was allowed pictures privilege in his posts and no one else was; it's a weird Mudcat word that has acquired a certain phamtom folkloric currency without actually meaning anything - below line they scream Troll at anyone who so much as dares express an opinion!

Otherwise - one of the more desperate Mudcat threads we've seen for some time, and very religious too - one sniff on a new convert and you're all over them like a rash, even telling them what music to listen to! I wonder if the girl who dared sing the heavy metal song ever came back to the folk club after being told to go away and listen to Kate Rusby and Maddy Prior? In my young day, if some young hopeful sang a Maddy Prior song (usually Alison Gross) they'd be told to go away and listen to Lizzie Higgins.

To read a personal message, just click on the "You have X personal messages" link at the top of the page, then once the list of messages has come up, click on the message title.

Lots of people leave Mudcat and come back years later. Others drop in every few weeks or months, maybe when something has come up about a particular interest of theirs. There's no rush to do anything in particular here, it's not like other forums where you're expected to devote all your spare time to it and get thrown off for inactivity. It would help to remember your username and password for when you come back, though.

A Troll is someone who comes in here and tries to start trouble with insults or anti Semitic comments. Anything whose purpose is to stir up trouble.

Daizee, no-one can "see" anything about you on here anyway, whether you post or not, other than your user name and a list of your posts, unless you choose to fill in the 2 profile boxes at the bottom of the membership information page. So no need to stop posting...just be careful what you say if you want to remain anonymous.

OTOH, I've been using internet forums, newsgroups and bulletin boards since the late 1980s, usually under my own name, and never had any problems with ID theft...but I do keep certain things private and I'm fairly computer-savvy, so was usually aware of how to minimise vulnerability without being overly-paranoid

if you do have a question to ask the group,
it is best to be specific in the thread title
such as: "looking for words to this song by so-and-so"
rather that "looking for words to a song"...

when you compose a thread, there are several ways to
list them such as "lyrics request" or "chord request"

if you are not on the topic of music, the message
should be posted at the bottom of the page ("B.S.")

as you can see there are people from all over the world here,
but still a lot of information is posted that is specific to
local areas and districts.

Or one can do what I do and remain a "Guest"; i.e. visit here, read the posts, learn from the accumulated knowledge, even add my own comments but not actually register.

I am very grateful to Max for setting Mudcat up but have an aversion to belonging to things or joining up. I once asked an active Mudcatter about the advantages of joining but the only real difference I could see was that other Mudcatters could "pm" you - which seems to be the very sort of thing that I and the Daizee Welsh would wish to avoid.

Again my thanks to those who set this up and those who maintain it, I'm sure I can be accused of wanting the best of both worlds but, if it's possible, why not?
