Subject: Lyr Req: Aberhonddu From: BDenz Date: 20 Apr 11 - 08:39 PM This is a Welsh song (done by Careg Lafar, maybe others) that may be a children's song. Anyone have the Welsh and/or a translation? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aberhonddu From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 Apr 11 - 08:51 PM Google says it is about a soldier leaving his town to travel across the seas to war. Can be heard on youtube. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aberhonddu From: sian, west wales Date: 21 Apr 11 - 05:39 PM I have the tune but I'm not sure I have the words. Antwn (one of Carreg) is on holiday but I'll see what I can get for you. And, yes, it's about a soldier leaving; not a children's song. sian |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aberhonddu From: GUEST,Paul Burke Date: 21 Apr 11 - 06:04 PM Is it related to "Chevaliers de la table Rhondda"? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aberhonddu From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Apr 11 - 11:20 PM I've been told that Aberhonddu was collected by Maria Jane Williams in the 19th Century. Here's a page about her: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Jane_Williams Perhaps if you get hold of a copy of her book, you can find the lyrics. (The book has been republished in recent times.) It's a beautiful song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Aberhonddu From: sian, west wales Date: 22 Apr 11 - 07:01 AM Yes - I knew I had it in Maria Jane William's "Ancient National Airs of Morgannwg a Gwent" but also knew that the actual music only had one verse. As it happens I see Daniel Huws, in his notes, gives the rest of the ballad, and I'm assuming it's the one Carreg sings. You're going to owe me a pint after this ... (^ after a letter means it should sit on top of the previous letter) Clywai'r tabwrdd efo'r chiwban, 'Nawr yn datgan 'To^n y Cam', Daeth y diwrnod, byddwch barod, Rhaid ymado a^ gwlad eich mam; De'wch bob dynyn, rhaid yw cychwyn; A chyn bo terfyn ar ein taith, Ni gawn deithio hir filldiroedd Dros y tir a'r moroedd maith. Trwm yw'r newydd, tra mawr niwed, Rhaid yw myned, dyma'r modd; Gado bryniau gwlad ein tadau, Oer yw'r geiriau iw'r rhoi ar go'dd; Gado Cymru, ardal wiwgu, Fwyn lle darfu i'n gael ein bod, A'i thrigolion hylon haeledd, Llawn o rinwedd llon erio'd. Nid oes gwyned 'nawr a^ gwenau, Oer yw'r geiriau, dagrau dwr, Ansirioldeb ydyw'r nodeb Sydd ar wyneb pob rhyw wr; Rhaid yw gadael 'nawr y lwysdref, Lle bu'n cartref flwyddyn bron, Tref careiddlu, ynghanol Cymru, Aberhonddu lwysgu lon. Dacw fwg y dre'n diflanu, Dacw'r teiau, muriau mawr; Yn ymddangos, (olwg decaf,) Y tro diweddaf inni 'nawr; Dacw'r Arfdy^ lle bu'n llety, Dacw'r gloch-dy^ Eglwys Fair, Ac ar ei ben ef geiliog amlwg, Yn cilio o'n golwg gyda^'r gair. Dacw'r Banau, brenin bryniau, Yn dal ei wenau uwch y dref; Ond yn fuan, dyma'r cwynfan, Mwy 'chawn wel'd mo honaw ef; Rhaid in' bellach, rhaid in' bellach, Ganu'n iach, er cwyno'r hir; Ac o'm cwynion a'm hoch'neidion, Cleddir fi mewn estron dir. T.I. Williams, Glanwysg "on the departure of the 23rd Regiment from the town of Brecon to Guernsey, 26 April 1826" Hm. 26 April. You've got 4 days to learn it! sian |
