Subject: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: D.Cavin Date: 15 Sep 99 - 10:07 AM I remember attending a workshop at Mariposa back in the early '70s at which a number of performers sang a song which I took to be a Carter Family song called "Remember Me". At the time, I assumed this was written by A.P. but have since learned that it was not.The workshop was on the Carter Family's songs. At any rate, I am searching for the lyrics to one of the verses, the last two lines of which are: "But in the end, fairweather friends will break your heart dear; and when they do, sweetheart, remember me". I found a version of the song on the net,but that verse was not there. Can anyone help me in this quest? |

Subject: Lyr Add: REMEMBER ME (Scotty Wiseman) From: Dale Rose Date: 15 Sep 99 - 10:50 AM Remember Me is a Scotty Wiseman song. He was half of the well known singing duo, Lulu Belle and Scotty. Last weekend I was privileged to hear Ruth McLain Smith sing this with the Grandpa Jones Band at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas. Over the years there have been many great versions, Lulu Belle and Scotty themselves, T Texas Tyler, on and on ~~ but I have to rate Ruth's version right up there with the best. I have several versions, including the Wisemans (available on The Sweethearts of Country Music, Starday CD 206, re released in 1991) ~~ here it is
Remember Me
The sweetest songs belong to lovers in the gloaming
chorus
You told me once that you were mine alone forever chorus

Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Dale Rose Date: 15 Sep 99 - 10:56 AM Uhh, it's in the DT as done by Willie Nelson, posted by Mr. GG, with an additonal verse. Don't know as I ever heard that one. |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Gene Date: 15 Sep 99 - 10:58 AM A brighter face may take your place when we're apart, dear A sweeter smile, a love more bold than me But in the end, fair weather friends will break your heart, dear If they do, sweetheart, remember me. |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Dale Rose Date: 15 Sep 99 - 11:05 AM Well, Gene, that one sure belongs, but for whatever reason, Lulu Belle and Scotty did not sing it on the version I have! I knew it seemed short. Shoulda checked the T Texas Tyler, I guess. |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Gene Date: 15 Sep 99 - 11:24 AM FWIW: Scott(y) stated that he wrote the song in 1939 and the Title was taken from a sentimental memento of the Gay Nineties, a fancy cup and saucer with Gold lettering, 'REMEMBER ME', on it; a souvenir somehow connected to the courtship of his Mother and Dad. The children were never allowed to touch it. He wrote it, while feeling a bit homesick and sentimental during the road trips between radio shows and personal appearances. The lyrics were not intended to apply to any particular person. REF: Sing Your Heart Out Country Boy by Dorothy Horstman |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Sandy Paton Date: 15 Sep 99 - 12:39 PM I heard that last verse as: Another face may take my place when we're apart, dear, A sweeter smile, and a love more bold and free. But, in the end, fair-weather friends may break your heart, dear. If they do, Sweetheart, remember me. Scotty used to order records from Folk-Legacy. Mostly stuff we'd collected in North Carolina. Made me feel real good! Sandy |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: M. Ted (inactive) Date: 15 Sep 99 - 01:04 PM I think my memory might be better than some of the others on this verse: A brighter face may take my place When we're apart, dear Another love, With heart more bold and true But in the end, fair weather friends May break your heart, dear And when they do, Sweetheart, Remember me. |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Sandy Paton Date: 15 Sep 99 - 02:57 PM All of us appear to be unintentionally "folk processing" Scotty's song. Anyone have the original sheet music? Sandy |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Dale Rose Date: 15 Sep 99 - 03:11 PM Checking the lyrics on the video tape of the Grandpa Jones tribute, Ruth McLain Smith sings bold and free, so I'll have to vote with Sandy on this one. |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Stewie Date: 16 Sep 99 - 01:37 AM On his 1975 'Saturday Night in the Provinces' album, Bill Spence sings 'bold and free', but that is hardly surprising since he noted that he got his version from Sandy! '... one of the all-time great sentimental songs. I originally fell in love with it while singing along with Sandy Paton while he and Caroline were performing at Caffe Lena. The version here is a combination of Sandy's and the original sheet music, plus my own folk processing'. |

Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: Gene Date: 16 Sep 99 - 10:42 AM The recorded lyrics are OFTEN ... NOT EXACTLY the same as the ORIGINAL lyrics and vary from recording to recording... I think the verse I posted was quoted from the ORIGINAL copyrighted lyrics... in the cited SOURCE. |
Subject: RE: lyrics to 'Remember Me'(When the candle From: M. Ted (inactive) Date: 16 Sep 99 - 11:24 AM Good point here. Gene--We sort of take for granted that, even though the "Folk songs" we know may have many variations in melody and verse, that there is a definitive version of every "composed" song-- I have spent a lot of time lately studying Ira Gershwin's lyrics lately, and many of the songs had additional lyrics written for different shows, lyrics changed for recordings, and lyrics deleted for television-- and in a number of cases, the origninal lyrics that he wrote were never used intact any where-- In today's "Music Market" most people are exposed to only one recording of a song, and it leads people to assume that that "popular" version is the only version, that it was written by the performer, and that it is recent in origin-- My sixteen year old daughter was stunned beyond words when I played her an old recording of "I'll Fly Away", because she thought that it was just part of a Rap record--

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Remember Me (When the Candle...(Wiseman) From: BrooklynJay Date: 07 Dec 10 - 04:23 PM The original lyrics posted above should be added to the DT. What's currently there was taken from a Willie Nelson recording and varies a great deal from what was originally written. I first heard this song in the early '60s, recorded by the Limeliters (with Ernie Sheldon/Lieberman replacing Glenn Yarbrough). Their version was very close to what Scott Wiseman wrote, though I think they put an extra chorus at the beginning before the first verse and they sang "brighter" instead of "fairer" in the final verse. No matter - it's a great song and is still one of my favorites. Anyone have the chords? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Remember Me (When the Candle...(Wiseman) From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jan 21 - 04:47 PM refresh - well sung by Leeneia at the singaround. Any corrections or additions? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Remember Me (When the Candle...(Wiseman) From: leeneia Date: 12 Jan 21 - 05:02 PM Thanks, Joe. I learned the song from a YouTube video with Scot Wiseman, the composer, and Lulu Belle. I don't think you can beat that for accuracy. The same lines have been posted here by Gene, above, in 1999. I prepared the sheet music, and I don't think I've ever seen that many incidentals in a traditional song before. I've transposed it to G to suit my voice, and the finished song includes F#, F, D, D#, A and A# in it. Oh. I did make one change. The original did not go "nya nya nya nya NYA nyaaa" in the third verse. |
