I came across an interesting Frankie Armstrong recording of a song called "Come Geordie, Hold the Bairn," which keeps repeating "I wish its mother would come."
Anybody have lyrics and background information for this song?

The song's by Joe Wilson. There's even a painting by Ralph Hedley:

I remember an old 78 record that featured a lot of dramatic patter alongside the main song, including a visit from a noisy stick-seller whose knocking and shouting wakes up the bairn. Can't find it on YouTube, but here's a fine rendering in passable dialect:

Previously posted by Conrad Bladey here:

Lyr Add: Geordie Haud the Bairn -- but in the text, titled "Come, Geordie--ha'd the Bairn or Aw wish thy Muther wad cum."

I'm not surprised that you would fail to find it, considering the difficulty with spelling.

Aw wish thy Muther wad cum

Which is how it appears in Crawhall's Beuk of 1888, though in this day and age the spelling of the verb gives a very different meaning to the sentiment than the phonentic would otherwise suggest.

Anyone have access to the patter? Soon as it turns up I'll be sure to post it.
