This coming Saturday, 18 June will be both the regular monthly, and the Second Annual Barry Finn Memorial Shanty, Forebitter and Ballad Session at the Press Room in Portsmouth NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

We're expecting a good turnout, including many of this year's Mysticians. Please come join us in lifting a song, a pint, a tot in remembrance of our old friend - Tom

Strange how someone can make such an impression on you. I often think of Barry and "magic" Barry moments usually still not accepting that he is dead.
Just last week a man walked by our office on Preble Street and I almost took off after him - a Barry look-a-like.
I miss him.

Sorry we can't make it, can't find anything succint enough, have a good sing and I will sing a few for Barry myself.

Tom-

Judy and I will be coming down, along with Danny and Gael Spooner. It should be a fine full-throated session!

Danny will also be doing a concert Sunday evening at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Everyone is invited!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

How I wish I could be there to sing a song in Barry's honour. I met him just once, when he was on a visit over here, and he made my day by telling me I was one of his favourite singers. More importantly he sang a number of great songs in a vividly wholehearted fashion. He sang one he wrote himself, about his son, which had my wife in tears. She,who had spent years of her life working with special needs people, understood the message of his song which told people to look beyond the handicap and see the person beneath. It was one of the outstanding moments in my life in folk music.   A while later I was in America for the Eisteddfod 2009, where John Roberts told me the sad news of Barry's passing.

I hit 'submit' accidentally. The posting should have continued thus -   Barry Finn's name is remembered with respect in the Harris house. Elaine and I will raise a glass to him at the appropriate time (adjusted) on Saturday. Burl.

Amy and I will be there, Tom. While I've always been interested in songs of the sea, listening to Barry back at the PMFF's in 2008 and 2009 really got me interested specifically in shanty singing. Wish he was still with us.

If you're planning oncoming to Portsmouth this Saturday, or for that matter, any day between now and 31 August, leave yourself some extra time to visit the Discover Portsmouth Center, now featuring an outstanding exhibit of maritime art. More details   here - Yom

That was Tom, obviously, not Yom. (Ach! No one wants a proofreader! -- Or...is there never a proofreader around when you need one?)

Besides the Sawtelle Collection, there's also the Niña and the Pinta reproductions currently moored at Badger's Island across the Piscataqua from Portsmouth.

Here - Columbus's Ships

But be at The Press Room 3:30 to 7:30 for the sing!

My best to every one in Portsmouth - wish I could be there tomorrow.
Like you all, Barry touched me with his singing, even though we only met on a few occasions, he will always be remembered. Sing one for me and keep remembering a remarkable man.
Best - Tim Radford

We'll certainly raise a few songs, and glasses in the honor of Mr. Finn.

We'll probably arrive at the Press Room a bit early so our family members can secure a good table.

Cheerily,

What a session. The room would have been packed to the rafters if there were any rafters left after the choruses!

I'll do more or a report tomorrow but it was just the kind of session that Barry would have loved.

Thanks for everyone for making this a wonderful afternoon/evening.

I know Danny and Gael had a great time.

I tried out the video function of my camera and this is what resulted --
At YouTube

And here it is at Facebook (I set the privacy level at "Everyone") --
At Facebook

I was feeling less than optimal today (think I caught the bug my boss had Thursday) and called in sick, but didn't have the energy or inclination to do much at the computer other than look at the photos from yesterday. I'll post a song list sometime soon.

It was a WONDERFUL session!

Song #40 was the launching of the John Masefield poem "Night at Dago Tom's" as adapted for singing by Andy Kenna of the Liverpool Forebitters. It's a classic description of a spree in sailortown.
