Subject: RE: BS: Elongated v. Round... Weigh in... From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Jun 11 - 06:12 AM But the real question is "Solid or Slotted?," isn't it? And in "olden times" when it was a long walk, one usually had the choice of "big hole, mama's hole, or kiddy hole;" and there was the perpetual debate about which end of the catalog should be used first. Subject: RE: BS: Elongated v. Round... Weigh in... From: GUEST Date: 28 Jun 11 - 11:59 AM All joking aside, it's a serious question, esp in a house where people have health challenges already. Don't make it too elongated, Bobert. For some reason, when the toilet is way elongated, it's hard to wipe yourself off. I worked in a store that had been built as a mostly-male sports store. The toilets were terrible. A yard long and 12 inches wide, IIRC. Keep in mind that the older we get, the less flexible the spine becomes. That's an embarrassing handicap already, and it's worse when the toilet is fighting you. When we remodeled, the saleswoman at Lowe's told us that for some reason, commercial places go for those long toilets. She advised one that is somewhat elongated, but not too much. It's working okay. |

Subject: RE: BS: Elongated v. Round... Weigh in... From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Jun 11 - 12:26 PM All joking aside, it's a serious question, esp in a house where people have health challenges already. For many people with health challenges, the height above the floor is a more important difference than the shape. The most common "home fixtures" in the US are "low-boy" designs (because it's stylish?). For some reason the "tallest" to be found in most retail shops is called a "standard height;" but it is a little over 2 inches taller than the more "fashonable" ones and even that makes a lot of difference for the "motion inhibited" user. The true "handicapped" design, meeting specifications of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), appears to be a "theoretical concept" not actually available anywhere I've been able to find - even on "special order." I've swapped fixtures in two houses thus far with much success, but the "porta-poo" in the camper remains sort of a special problem. (I've considered a ceiling hook and a cable winch for getting her off the pot; but the roof would have to be reinforced, and she's objected to that.) John |

Subject: RE: BS: Elongated v. Round... Weigh in... From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Jun 11 - 12:39 PM Elongated is better, and I'll tell you why. The elongated ones look handsomer and they are much more maneuverable and active in every way. The round ones are also kind of cute, admittedly, but they lie around too much and are dead lazy! They expect you, fer Chrissake, to bring the water dish to them when they get thirsty! You will sometimes find that the elongated ones get a lot rounder as the years go by. This can be prevented to some extent by restricting their food supply and taking them for a brisk walk every day, but there's no guarantee that you won't end up with a very round one eventually, in which case you can use it as a doorstop. |

Subject: RE: BS: Elongated v. Round... Weigh in... From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 28 Jun 11 - 09:32 PM yes, they're adorable. YouTube has certainly made me realize how many wonderful things there are in this world that never appear on TV. Imagine an expensive room at CBS, NBC or BBC where people agonize over what to put on TV. Westerns? reality show? weather? crime? No, wiener dogs! One race showed over 144,000 viewings. =========== John in KS: that is a good point about the height being important. |

Subject: RE: BS: Elongated v. Round... Weigh in... From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 28 Jun 11 - 09:36 PM Sorry about the "I don't care as long as it's not green," answer. Subject: RE: BS: Elongated v. Round... Weigh in... From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Jun 11 - 11:18 AM gnu Yup. 17" and 3.5 gallons per use. The 17" (to the top of the porcelain) is about as tall as you can get in my area, and you may have to open the box and measure to find out how tall one is at the plumbing shop. I've seen a few that look to be about 19 - 20" tall in public-place "handicapped stalls," but couldn't find a manufacturer or distributor for anything taller than 17" last time I looked. Our previous installation was one of the (new at the time) 3.5 gpf kind, but didn't save a lot of water 'cause it required more than one flush about half the times. Our latest is rated 1.7 gpf and works almost every time. Both were/are nominally 17" tall, but "popular" styles run as short as 12.5" which is almost like sitting on the floor (which I've heard is the popular style in some places I don't much care to visit).
