I am, at this very point in time, eating a chunk of angel food cake, smeared with some peanut butter, with choclut puddin spooned over it.

Jacqui,

Have you tried these?

Rice Thins or Corn Thins

PB goes beautifully with them.

When I could eat wheat products I used to love peanut butter on toast. PB on Ryvitas was a treat going back to my childhood.

Now I'll eat the stuff straight from the jar, but it has to be just peanuts and a little salt - can't stand the sweetened stuff.

Spaw - I've been known to eat sweetened condensed milk straight from the can - try to avoid it these days though.......

Thanks for the info, frogprince. I had assumed that Peter Combe had made it up, but it's obviously been around longer than I have, and travelled the world.

It is funny. A kind of endless loop joke.

An Aussie children's CD by Peter Combe had this joke on it. A quick google found a YouTube video of someone telling the joke. I couldn't find info about the Peter Combe CD because I remember hearing it about 20 years ago when I worked in the library, and it was just a spoken bit between music tracks.

Two tablespoons of PB contains 188 calories. To burn this off, you need to perform 30 minutes of light cycling or 24 minutes of ballroom dancing! Tango, anyone?

Oh, lord; they have those buckeyes on the counter by the register at at least one local gas station. I have a reputation for having a sweet tooth, but I can barely deal with buttermilk pie, and one of those buckeyes about cured me for life. Spaw, is there a limit to what you'll eat? Do you ever just pour corn syrup in the sugar bowl, stir it up, and eat it with a spoon? I generally prefer my peanut butter sweetened a little too, but SHEEEESH !

And ya' know a wonderful North Carolina 'Catter sent me some from down her way when I got out of the hospital last winter. They were so damn good I have now made her an Honorary Ohioan!

When I first tasted it in my teens I didn't like it at all, that was the smooth kind. Later I started buying the crunchy kind and found it so much better on crusty bread and lately trying it with a variety of things it makes a quick satisfying snack. Better for you than a packet of crisps or a bar of chocolate.

The only nut spread I am not terribly keen on is the hazelnut/chocolate combo spread Nutella I think it's called, is that classed as a nut butter spread? The smell of that I find revolting.

Having never eaten peanut butter, reading of all the variations and preferences is quite amazing.

Peas and green beans are about the only legumes I eat - and I really don't think I could eat peanut butter - I have smelt it and thought it revolting.

Maybe it is a cultural thing.

The store in the next town over runs a deal ever couple of months
peter pan creamy 10 for $10.. I usually go in and 50 jars for the food pantry when they do. Lasts around 2 or 3 months .

You have to read the label carefully; even some brands that claim to have 'natural' pb list ingredients like hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup- which, of course, totally defeat the healthy aspects of eating pb. Which I don't really like much, but have on hand as a snack because of its health benefits. Only the ones (store brand or not) that list only peanuts are what I eat.

btw if you ever want to catch a d**n mouse, put some pb out. They love it.

Smuckers/Laura Scudder (they're the same) which still comes in a glass jar. Don't use Trader Joe's because it comes in plastic jars. We're not regular PB eaters, and the food tends to dry out over time in plastic; not so in glass.

The no-sugar thing in PB is now so popular that even the store brand knock-offs are sometimes there. Of course cashew butter is better, and hazelnut is OK too. ;~)

We'uns gits what-all comes to hand.

No one I know, outside of my immediate family, will even try peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches. I love them. The lettuce has to be crunchy. Even my hubby won't try it.

Some of my other favourite sandwich combos are PB & tomato, PB & banana, PB & honey, PB & jam, PB & marmalade.

I like PB on rice crackers - the ones made of puffed rice, not the thin ones used for dips etc. All of the above combos work on rice crackers too.

Seriously, peanuts increase my... you know... not that I need any more trouble. But if Annette was to happen by, well, I'd make cracked wheat toast with peanut butter and woooooo her. I expect she'd be turned on by a late evening sensuous repast of peanut butter on cracked wheat toast accompanied with cold Bud. mmmmmmmmm

There are very few days whe I don't eat some peanut butter of some sort.

The way Tristan goes through PB we buy the cheapest in the biggest container readily available. Generally it comes from the grocery stores we use most (Giant Eagle and Kroger) as their "House Brand" in a bigass plastic jug/bottle/thingie.   Sometimes we can get it for as low as $5.50 even! For that price I could give a shit less if it had Crisco, floor sweeping peanuts, motor oil, or cat crap in it. The stuff would still disappear in much less than 10 days!

Ebbie, Whole Foods in RI have peanut butter machines that customers can use. A few years ago my son, grandson, and I went to FL and discovered supermarkets in that state had those machines, too, but I hadn't been able to find PB with no salt on the shelves so an employee brought me the plastic tub of PB. Looking at the label, I asked about it and he told me he had made it on the spot for me, so I don't know if the machine was available for customers to use or behind the scenes for employees to use. I've never used one of those machines myself, though--not at Whole Foods prices!

I avoid the salt.

I suspect the reason the peanut butter makers have largely disappeared is that many boards of health require that they be disassembled and cleaned each night. Take it from me, even 40 years ago, it was not a pleasant job.
