Well-loved, long favored Scottish folk singer, Alex Beaton is in hospital in the Nashville TN area in critical condition.

Alex suffered a rupture disc that blocked his heart function a few days ago. He was revived by CPR and rushed into surgery. The extent of damage from his heart stoppage is not yet known. Likewise the extent of nerve damage from his spinal injury has yet to be determined. But Alex is breathing on his own, is conscious and has some signs of good nerve function.

My thoughts and prayers are with Alex and his family.

"Update on Alex: Beth tells me that Alex is doing much the same for the moment, but because of the cervical collar/neck brace he is having some difficulty swallowing/eating so they may go to a feeding tube for a while. He is doing his breathing exercises, ...though, and his lungs are sounding better. He can move his toes some and they plan to begin physical therapy today or tomorrow. They have seen the surgeon but are still waiting to see the neurologist. He flirted with the cleaning lady and call Beth a "pain in the arse" several times (possibly the meds...or not). Please pass this on to anyone and continue to think strong, healing thoughts.

I was shocked to hear about Alex. He is well loved in our state and our thoughts and prayers are with him during this difficult time. If Alex is giving the nurses a hard time then that is a good sign. Here's to a speedy recovery.

My husband and I loved Alex from the minute we heard him perform at the games in Pleasanton, California about six years ago. We have been on two tours of Scotland with him and had the time of our lives both times! I have all of his CD's and listen to his beautiful voice often on my Ipod. His music is so soothing and just plain fun. We too can not believe such a vibrant, wonderful, spirited man is now in a hospital bed. We hope and pray that that vigor and spunk will help him to fight his way back to his family and friends who love him. Please get well, Alex! We all love you so much!

Like Karen Giantasio, I, too, had the pleasure of an outstanding guided tour of Scotland with Alex. He may be our "resting giant" at the moment, but if any man has the power to recover, it is our Alex.

I spent 12 days with Alex in Scotland in fall, 2009, and had a great time with him, he is always funny and sings great old Scottish and Irish songs.

When I first saw him in the bar of the Glasgow hotel, I called out "Alex Beaton?"   I had never seen him before but had seen his picture on an album of his. He walked right up to me and said, "Do I owe you money?"

We got along great after that. My best wishes to Alex on his recovery!

An update from friends at the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games...

Today is exactly one month since Alex had surgery for his accident and he reached BIG milestone today. He was transferred to Shepherd Center, a rehab facility with a special focus on spinal cord injuries, in Atlanta to begin his rehabilitation! This is a world class center with highly trained professionals and we are all very excited about this BIG step forward. His transport, by an air-ambulance,... went very smoothly and he & Linda arrived at Shepherd this afternoon.

Linda said things could not be better there! The staff had researched Alex, been to his website, and found out about who he is as a person…..not just a patient. Three different doctors came separately to meet Alex and talk with him. Each spent almost an hour and all were very encouraging. Alex was able to tell each of them where the doctor was touching him throughout the exam (he could FEEL it!).

They have changed the way he is using the ventilator and he is doing more of his own breathing. With some adjustments, he was able to talk for a while and Linda said he did not stop talking for 45 minutes straight!! She said he never sounded better.

Also the speech therapist met with Alex and he passed his swallow study! This means he will be able to eat & drink and they ordered a regular diet for him! Tonight he drank three cups of water through a straw and had some pudding. It has been a month since he has eaten by mouth so it will take some time to work back up to a full diet.

Alex is still in ICU and visitation is limited because of that but we will get more details about the policies of Shepherd tomorrow. The mailing address is listed below and we will also have an email address soon.

All of this, along with the fact that his neck brace was removed yesterday, has been very encouraging to Alex and Linda. He is in great spirits today and looking forward to the next part of his journey. As he left Baptist MICU today, the nurses had some cards and a gift for him. Some of them cried as they said goodbye to him—a testimony to how he had touched their life. We are all so fortunately to know this special man!!

When you met Jordie at age 3, you dedicated the song to her in front of a huge crowd in Sun City. You gave her a signed CD of her own. At 6 now, she has very fond memories of that. A photo of the two of you hangs on her wall. This February, you sang two songs at the request of Willi (3), who walked up to you in his Wallace Kilt during your performance. You were so sweet, and made him feel SO IMPORTANT!

met alex many years ago and the scottish fair in los angeles around 1990 i think it was. He is a fabulous entertain and a wonderful person my husband and my prayers are with him. I just read about this tonight. In 98 my husband had surgery on his cspine it had shifted and was compressing his spinal cord so i know what alex's family is going through right now fortunately he only lost 90 percent of use of left side but has gotten 60 percent back. will go leave message on alex's site for him.

I spoke yesterday with a mutual friend who said Alex is still quite seriously affected. He is still in a home (I believe a VA home) and is expected to move to a home closer to Nashville soon. I believe Alex has a very difficult road ahead of. As many of you know, Alex has been at the VA hospital in Memphis TN since the week before Christmas. Yesterday, Alex's medical conference was held and the bottom line is that he will discharged from the VA on Valentine's Day-what a present for the two of us!!

Until that time, if people want to visit him at the VA, it's best to do so after 3:00 pm Monday through Friday or on the weekend.

He continues to work hard in therapy and is still seeing progress in his recovery. Please keep him in your prayers that he may finally get to come home after seven and one-half months in four different hospitals! We can not begin to tell your how much you love and support have meant to us.

Alex, we were just on the Kentucky Scottish Weekend website to plan our annual trip to see you, and were shocked to find out what you've been going through. We love you dearly and are catching up on eight months of prayers and positive thoughts! We're thrilled to hear that you've made such remarkable progress and are finally home now.

Bill and I stumbled across the Kentucky event back in the early 90s quite by accident when we were down that way from Pekin, Illinois, for a college alumni event. It was you who got us hooked, though, and we've been back every year since and have scheduled vacations around the Detroit and Ohio games just to see you perform there. Our son Joe has heard you since before he was born and will surely miss his annual ritual - 15 years now! - of your presenting him with your name tag at the end of the Kentucky weekend. Texas Scottish Fan, I can almost see your house from here. I work at UTA in the Library (also am MA '99 English), and a favorite English professor (Lacy) also backs up to the parking lot for the festival venue. White Way, on the corner.
