With all due respect to Richard Greene, what about Bobby Hicks? Very much alive and playing wonderful music with a twinkle in his eye!

A few years back, we all had fiddle greats Johnny Gimble, Chubby Wise, Kenny Baker and Vassar Clements. All, by the way, have roots in the work of Jazz fiddlers Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith and Stephan Grappelli, rather than in old trad fiddle tune players.

Gimble is about the same age as Baker and played well a couple of years ago.

At this point, you have to consider non-country fiddler Richard Greene the top man in this craft.

His work with Monroe was superlative -- Later, his work playing duets, finger-picking his guitar, with Josh Graves on Dobro was as tasteful and unique as his fiddling.

Truly, as Cool Beans said, this is a huge loss---!

I had the great pleasure of meeting Kenny Baker in the Engineer near CSH when he was over here touring with Bill Monroe. He was having a great time jamming with the lads in the Engineer (Eric Leggoe was playing bass!). A very nice man, and a privilege to have been there.

RIP.

Loved his playing both with Bill Monroe and on his solo recordings.
Kenny makes a nice appearance in the tv series where Aly Bain's tv series visited the States.
