Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,livelylass Date: 11 Jul 11 - 11:18 AM The fumes from all that burning vinyl must have got right up inside those cow heads! Enjoyed the video apart from the "But what is modern art?" tags stuck on the end. T'is nice to see the KLF mucking about still! |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,livelylass Date: 11 Jul 11 - 11:46 AM "hardly Mudcat Fare" Who knows, a scan on YouTube reveals that the moo-headed-ones have played at Cecil Sharp House as part of some promotional evening for 'rustic' toiletry products! |

Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 11 Jul 11 - 12:39 PM interesting visuals... but much too long and boring. It really would have benefited from some young naked ladies in scanty see-thru pagan hippy smocks dancing round the funeral pyre.. [they used to do it much better in cheesey 70's horror flics..] The soundtrack sounds like an average first attempt at using about 5 loops in a newly downloaded shareware audio sequencer. |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: nickp Date: 11 Jul 11 - 01:35 PM 5 minutes of my life wasted. |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: Jim Moray Date: 11 Jul 11 - 02:42 PM Maybe this might give a clue : http://youtu.be/z9VNgj81nFk - the KLF famously burnt a million quid and made a film about it. Meanwhile, the FLK record which I got sent seems to be a sample-for-sample rerecording of the KLF's Chill Out album - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chill_Out - only with folk music making up all the samples. I wouldn't at all be surprised if a dead sheep turns up on the steps outside the BBC Folk Awards this year (read up on the KLF to get the significance of that). |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,livelylass Date: 11 Jul 11 - 03:10 PM "the FLK record which I got sent seems to be a sample-for-sample rerecording of the KLF's Chill Out album - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chill_Out - only with folk music making up all the samples." Intriguing, I'll have look that up. There's a great deal of scope for folk/electronic cross-over, which has yet to be explored. Elsewhere, I posited a fantasy group called The Macrame Owl Project, who were art school nerds in post-ironic tee shirts creating experimental / ambient pieces uses samples from obscure psych-folk records. Not too far off the mark perhaps: thread.cfm?threadid=138749#3176718 |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,livelylass Date: 11 Jul 11 - 03:17 PM The FLK record I mean, though I haven't found anything about it online. Where to get it? |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,livelylass Date: 11 Jul 11 - 04:03 PM Hmm, well according to fRoots, it would appear that it can't actually be got, not in the usual manner at least as their copy had no info on it of any kind bar a piccie of a cow. |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: Jim Moray Date: 11 Jul 11 - 04:41 PM Its not out yet, but I know the publicist working on the album so I got an advance copy. |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,Necessary Plagiarist Date: 11 Jul 11 - 05:11 PM Burn Liege and Leif? Good luck to them. What else is Liege and Leif but a sequence of tasteless, bland modernisations of some nice old characterful properties; the wattle & daub of the originals ripped out and replaced with mass produced breeze block and plaster board; sash windows replaced with UPVC and the open fires with flame-effect gas fires? |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,livelylass Date: 11 Jul 11 - 05:24 PM Never actually heard Liege & Lief tbh, never even heard OF it in point of fact. And wtf does Liege & Lief mean anyway? Sounds like forelock tugging stuff to me. |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,moomoo Date: 14 Jul 11 - 11:04 AM Looks like there's some debate over whether the KLF or Show of Hands might be behind this. |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: Folknacious Date: 14 Jul 11 - 11:23 AM I read a hint elsewhere that it might be Ashley Hutchings. The music's certainly unimaginitive enough. |

Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: Richard from Liverpool Date: 17 Aug 11 - 05:11 PM http://soundcloud.com/theflk New FLK track on soundcloud; "IDIOT STARKEY RIOT IN A JAM JAR!" (a reaction to David Starkey's populism passing as intellectualism on Friday's newsnight) |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,Album Date: 15 Sep 11 - 10:44 AM I have received a copy - presumably in my role as a folk programme presenter on radio. I'll certainly play it - though I might have to fade in and out since the track is quite long. Interesting stuff. Surely the point is that the Liege and Lief was described as the best folk record ever - which is clearly wasn't and never has been! |

Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: Herga Kitty Date: 15 Sep 11 - 04:27 PM Livelylass - it's worth hearing L&L to catch Sandy Denny singing Tam Lin... and Banks of the Nile... and Crazy Man Michael.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,BigDaddy Date: 16 Sep 11 - 03:51 AM Someone has too much time on their hands and too little imagination. What to follow with? Destroying "Below the Salt" by Steeleye Span? "Cruel Sister" by Pentangle? There are so many more (deserving) LPs out there one might wish to destroy. But why bother? Don't like them? Don't buy them. Think they're over-rated? So what? So much easier to support what you like. As for myself, I have a personal relationship with "Liege and Lief." First heard it on a transistor radio in my room at bedtime (or past) in the late sixties. Realized that someone had done something unique with the old ballads my mother and grandmother sang to me when I was quite young. Turned them into something new for my generation. Inspired me to turn my interests into a second career of sorts (playing and singing old ballads for $$ and appreciation). Long live Liege and Lief. IMHO. |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: Llanfair Date: 16 Sep 11 - 10:36 AM Curioser and curioser. Interesting piece of what looks like media student stuff, but the scenery includes a broken solar sphere....very expensive to buy, and comparatively recent "technology". Also, where did they get all those new-looking vinyl copies of Leige and Lief? they landed on the fire with some weight behind them.....not just photocopies then? It's actually one of my favourite recordings, but I'm just a superannuated hippie (literally) |
Subject: RE: The FLK Burn Liege & Lief From: GUEST,folkiedave Date: 16 Sep 11 - 06:18 PM Interesting comments. I interpreted it simply as a protest against it being voted best record of all time. (And I suspect that as a concept anyway). Thus "Below the Salt" should be Ok! |
