Fred, heed the words of Cromwell, in relation to campaigning for the closure of mudcat.
i beseech you in the bowels of christ think it possible you may be mistaken."

Amos, if only it was about teacher being unkind about finger painting.
It's is many times more serious than that.

May I suggest that threads like this be removed whilst Max works on things. It serves no purpose to wash our dirty linen in public.

It is time to draw the line and leave Max in peace.

By the same token, I understand Fred completely and support his concerns.

Lets all agree to disagree and move on and hope for a much safer place in the future where we can get back to discussing our music and helping to solve questions about music.

Getting upset over exchanges on the Cat is a little like hating the world and everything in it because your second-grade teacher was unkind about your finger-painting.

Despite all the chest-beating and hair-pulling and rancour, the Mudcat beat goes on to be enjoyed by those who care to contribute positively. Your loud complaints are confessions, God knows of what, but that's what you should be sorting.

Hi Max: I fully understand the sense of having to do one thing and another... as you know I was targeted by the same event, and certain obnoxious beliefs were posted in public under my name, and under a photo of me stolen from another site. So, rather than comment on wiether or not this is the best way to address this, I do want to ask if you are archiving the PMs. I have, for example, years of conversations with our dear late friend Rick Fielding, which mean a lot to me, and I would have downloaded them if I knew they would be gone.

No recriminations, just hope all goes well soon,
All the best

We can see that a start has been made to deal with this massive problem.

If those of us who have complained long and loudly do not now allow time for this to happen, then we are not being fair.

Folks, while I have been involved in the background, I have avoided the conversations, in Email and here, as no good comes of it. While the support is appreciated, it is not needed. This person we are dealing with revels in in it. I am going to offer this one piece of advice. If you are a supporter of the Mudcat and want to see it survive, just leave this conversation and continue with your other discussions of music and issues as normal. Further discussions only serve to feed that which we are attempting to end. Thanks for the support, but now is the time to be quiet as we go about our work. If you once loved the Mudcat, but now are angry at what we have to do, fair enough. Kindly leave, and know that we hope you return one day to a Mudcat that more closely resembles that which you once cared about.

The meds we have to administer to the 'Cat are strong, and have side effects. But the illness is at a critical stage. Max has invested his treasure and time, and loves his creation more than you know. But he is also as savvy a tech/Internet guy as exists. You don't have to like the frustration he expressed, but understand he knows how to deal with this.

Now be quiet and go enjoy this site while we go about the business at hand.

All the best, (really)

Mick

Bah, someone got here first with the Hotel California comment. Richard, we now can't be friends. ;)

And one would argue that if you're getting emails from Max/Joe then they'd be perfectly happy to oblige.

"...the only thing I'm going do in the future is campaign for the closure of Mudcat".

Fred, you may be frustrated and angry, I'll grant you that - but I suggest that attacking and seeking the closure of a forum that does provide knowledge and help and yes, refuge, for hundreds who have done you no wrong, just to spite the organisers, is not the way to further your argument. It's just throwing toys out of the pram/spitting the dummy, and it weakens your case (and that of others too, I might add).

There is a serious need for many of us to calm down, take a page out of Richard Bridge's book and focus not on the latest unwelcome expression we heard/read, but on the real cause. Don't weaken the cause. And for god's sake don't utter threats you don't really mean (I think).

Now that the PMs have been disabled I might start logging in more often. Word is they're not that 'private' anyway, though the last time I looked the offending missive from Pope Joe (AKA Number Two) was still there, but who can say? The irony is now that I can't get at my own private messages.

I'm sure that if anyone wants to leave, It's quite simple...Don't log on...And if you get insulting E Mails from people purporting to be from here, just assume that they are junk, and delete without reading. As others have said, it is still mainly an interesting resource, with mainly sincere people giving useful information. Just because a few right wing nutters are about at the moment, just don't let them get to you..Thats all.

Glory be! That means anyone who is dissatisfied with Mudcat can easily set up their own forum, invite others to join, run it however they please, and show Max how it ought to be done.

What are you sticking around here for?

Nutty - it doesn't cost a penny to run an Internet Forum these days; you can set up such a thing for nothing and it'll run itself quite happily.

Not sure that is so for a site like this - however, regardless of cost there is the amount of time that has to be spent keeping it running smoothly. I have very high regard for Max and the mods, who spend time putting out bush fires and generally stopping the whole thing descending into total mayhem.

the only thing I'm going do in the future is campaign for the closure of Mudcat.

I'm not sure who you think you can campaign to. As had been said previously, just don't log in to the site again. I like Mudcat and am appreciative of the benefits the site has given me over the past ten years. I would be very sorry to see it go.

Pass me the sick bucket.

The worst ever PM I ever recieved was from Joe Offer. Worse than that, no doubt everyone here will think I deserved it. The best of Mudcat is the simple crack of the thing that has nothing to do with either Max, Joe or any the ongoing personality cults be it above or below the line; the best threads (like the Reimagined Village which Pope Joe bounced below the line after nigh on 1000 posts, refusing to say why) are perfect reflections of this good humoured naturally civilised human intercourse.

Nutty - it doesn't cost a penny to run an Internet Forum these days; you can set up such a thing for nothing and it'll run itself quite happily. We're living in the age of miracles and no mistake.

With all due respect, I think some who are planning to leave may want all of their posts deleted or at least hidden. That may be technically more difficult. My present intention is to stay and do as much as I can to assist in seeking a good way forward but I don't propose to canvass here or elsewhere openly on the Mudcat what I think the steps forward might be.

Fred - try to look at all the positive things that have happened over the years because Mudcat exists and remember that it only exists because of the amount of money and time that Max has committed to it.

Obviously he is having a hard time at present but he is trying to sort things out.

Try to understand this .
If you are having a bad time think of what it is like for him.

If you really can't empathise and forgive then at least leave graciously

Fred, just to clarify, as said that was *my* interpretation of Max's statement about "retiring" members rather than his own words, which were:

"*Mudcat is not for everyone. Some members will be encouraged to retire.
*mudcat.org has to deal with the troll independent of the ideologies
*UK members are 1/4 of the mudcat community. Our standards, philosophies, goals, freedoms, rules, allowances... are for the whole.
*Freedom remains a fundamental principal of mudcat.org

He's said that he'll be going into greater detail about the above statement later, and until such time as he elaborates, my interpretation of his statement may well have been an overly 'blunt' one.

Lively Lass. I wasn't aware that Max was planning a cull. He could have started with the above mentioned shite. That would have saved everybody a lot of trouble.

Wesley S. Please don't accuse me of looking for sympathy when you have no idea of the issues involved. I just want to get the hell out of here and it seems no-one can leave without Max's say so. Bloody marvellous.

It's always best to go with a song.

Fred... look, this isn't real life mate, it is a bloody e-world. Have a drink, a laugh and put things in perspective. He didn't punch you in the face or poke you in the eye with a stick. Folks from a certain political party on this site have been doing some really vile things, things which in the US are patently against the law, and being someone who was the target of that silliness... well, I have a lot more important things in my life than chacing e-phontoms, who have nothing in their lives except poking at people in the dark, to prove they are greater eejits than ever dreamed of in our philosophy.

Go or tarry, but remember it is all water off a duck's back, (sorry to bring you into all this Geoff the D... and quACK!)

When someone is rude to you, you can brood, break stuff, plan awful things until your liver bursts, or laugh it off, and get back to the party. You'r blood pressure will benifit the second course of action.

Put out yer paw, if the other fellow doesn't take it, who is the better man, eh?

So, have an e-drink on me, buck up, and give us an old tune

Lorcan

Fred: Checking your recent posts it looks like you've been caught up in the trolling problem that Max is dealing with at the moment. Check the 'From Max thread' (which hopefully will be refreshed daily) where he explains what he's trying to sort out for us.

It may be that there has been a misundersanding if there are 2 members using your name or a similar version thereof. I hope it gets sorted for you amicably and if it's an error I'm sure it can be proved one way or the other.

But as others have said, if you really feel that you want to leave, that's easy. Membership doesn't get cancelled here, unless by Max. Just log out & lose your cookie....

Max and all the Mudcat Volunteers are having a very difficult time just now due to problems created within the UK and we're lucky that Max has kept part of the Mudcat going for us. Thanks Max, you're such a good boy!

The first thing to do is to make a Grand Pronouncment so everyone knows how upset you are. This always helps with the pity factor. And you can count on some folks begging you to stay.

Then turn off your computer and don't come back.

I got the impression from his statement that Max intends to cull a quantity of UK members due to political discussions below the line attracting unwanted interest from elsewhere on the web.
