Subject: RE: Hey Mudcat Fiddlers From: kendall Date: 14 Jul 11 - 07:18 PM An old friend gave me a fiddle; another gave me a bow, (loaned indefinitely). I don't even know how to tune it! I was shocked when I went to buy a set of strings, $20.00! |

Subject: RE: Hey Mudcat Fiddlers From: maeve Date: 14 Jul 11 - 07:22 PM "O mio babbino caro" can be played in any number of styles, Dan, whether you call the instrument a fiddle or a violin. Look at your email. Kendall, I can help with your fiddle tuning if you still want help next time I see you. Maeve |

Subject: RE: Hey Mudcat Fiddlers From: olddude Date: 14 Jul 11 - 08:55 PM Thank you Maeve no problem if you other folks aren't interested. I can play it on my classical guitar just fine. I would have liked to hear it on a fiddle, violin or whatever the hell you choose to call the thing. I should know better than to ask. |

Subject: RE: Hey Mudcat Fiddlers From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 15 Jul 11 - 06:27 AM I think of my fiddle and violin as two very different instruments even though they're one and the same. Under my chin, it becomes a violin; over my arm it becomes a fiddle; when I play freely-improvised atonal sonatas in the neo-classical style (think Erich Zann in a melancholy fug) it is a violin; when I accompany myself on The Marla Hill Ducks it is a fiddle. PS - I love 5-string banjos, but have certain problems with tenors, 6-string and uke types. |

Subject: RE: Hey Mudcat Fiddlers From: GUEST,ripov Date: 15 Jul 11 - 06:33 AM Didn't Bell do well? Mind you, it's harder in the right key. Suibhne I'm not surprised that your improvisation goes atonal if you don't hold the thing properly. |

Subject: RE: Hey Mudcat Fiddlers From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 15 Jul 11 - 07:34 AM It goes atonal when I do hold the thing properly! |
