Subject: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: autolycus Date: 16 Jul 11 - 12:22 PM I wanted to find the recent thread about not-well-known-people obits. I get nothing right putting obit or obituary into search function; amd personal page is temporarily disabled. What do I do? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: ranger1 Date: 16 Jul 11 - 12:26 PM Hey autolycus: is this it? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Jul 11 - 12:27 PM Or this? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: autolycus Date: 16 Jul 11 - 12:46 PM Thanks both. I thought ranger had it, and John has the one. Btw, key-by-key, how does one find out such a thing? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: katlaughing Date: 16 Jul 11 - 01:15 PM If you go to the top of the threads and put in the search words, preferably just one or two you are certain were in the title, then be sure to use the drop down menu to choose a length of time, i.e. 1,3,7 days or more in months and years, then hit go you should be able to find it, esp. if you've set the age back a bit. If a thread hasn't had any recent postings, it won't show up unless you've set the age to search back a ways. Also, if you know of someone who posted to it, you can go to the Quick Links, use the drop down menu and scroll down to Old Adv. Forum Search, hit Go and fill in the boxes. OR, click on that member's name in any of their postings and that will take you to a list of all their postings which you can then search. And, in the regular search box up in the lefthand corner, if you click on Advanced, you can search by member name and subject. Hope that is all clearer than mud. If not, holler.:-) kat |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: ranger1 Date: 16 Jul 11 - 01:16 PM Trial and error, really. I typed "not so famous" into the search filter and set it to refresh "all". I imagine John did something similar. Then again, he might well have known exactly which thread he was looking for. Can't answer for him, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Jul 11 - 01:22 PM Autolycus: Click this link: http://mudcat.org/usersearch.cfm?who=autolycus. That will bring up a list of your 200 most recent posts. There is a button at the bottom of the page that will bring up the next 200, etc. Once you have displayed that page, I recommend you bookmark it. Give it a name you will remember; I don't think the default "Search Results" is very helpful. Once you have displayed that page, you can search it (ctrl-F) for words like "Obit." I am assuming you are looking for a thread you have posted to before. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: MGM·Lion Date: 16 Jul 11 - 01:52 PM You can more simply take that initial step, either by clicking on your name on any post on any thread, or by clicking on Personal Page in the header menu following the link there to the 'view all your posts' option. ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: autolycus Date: 16 Jul 11 - 02:55 PM Thanks everyone. I did what kat said but didn't get wghat i was looking for when I typed 'obit', the only bit I could remember. Icouldn't remember 'not so famous'. Thanks for the link, Jim. Normally I can do that myself but, as I said, when I click on Personal page, lately it keeps saying 'Disabled' |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: autolycus Date: 16 Jul 11 - 02:56 PM Actually 'Disabled until further notice,' |

Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: autolycus Date: 17 Jul 11 - 01:27 PM The last bit of The Cocoanuts [that's how they spell it] missing and it's still very funny. Then Monkey Business, good to see it again "You call this a barn? It looks more like a stable." "Well if you look at it, it's a barn, if you smell it, it's a stable." Te "Sanity clause" schtick is great, too; one of so many. Friend of mine once left me a note saying "Enjoy the chaos. It's all there is." Sums up the Marx Brothers. |
Subject: AnyClone Question From: wysiwyg Date: 17 Jul 11 - 05:18 PM Just curious-- if I hit "Trace" on a thread now, will it end up on my personal page once those are restored, or do I need to figure out a workaround? Thanks, ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Jul 11 - 04:27 AM Wysi - I don't know that any of us will know whether the "Trace" will make it to a personal page until Max lets us get to them again. A workaround I've used is just to copy the thread URL for a place I might want to get back to and paste it in Word. Save the Word doc someplace handy. (Usually this only for places other than mudcat, but it will work here too.) In Word, you can set the option to convert URLs to links when you type something after the end of the URL, so that you can just click to open your browser and go to the page directly from the document. A similar option may be there in other WP programs. If that option isn't handy, you can just copy the URL and paste it in a browser addy bar. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: Jim Carroll Date: 18 Jul 11 - 09:03 AM Does anybody know when we are going to get our personal pages back - waiting to ask MtheGM how to send a smiley? Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: MGM·Lion Date: 18 Jul 11 - 10:20 AM Jim ~~ On an iMac there is a feature called Character Palette from which smileys, and all kinds of other shapes & stuff ~~~ ❂♞☹☎❤✂☜☸〠☃✌ can be inserted into the text. ~M~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: GUEST, topsie Date: 18 Jul 11 - 10:26 AM ☺ See that you have 'NUM LOCK' switched to 'on'. Hold down ALT, and while holding it down press the 1 on the number pad (NOT the numbers across the top). When you release it you should have a smiley [not keen on them myself, though]. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: JohnInKansas Date: 18 Jul 11 - 05:43 PM The samples of smileys, and all kinds of other shapes & stuff ~~~ posted by MtheGM copy to my Word as being from a font called "MS Mincho." MS Mincho appears to be an "extended Unicode" font that contains a fairly rich set of "oriental(?)" characters, along with most of the Latin A characters, so it may be of use for persons who write a in both "eastern" and "western" languages. English text using this font isn't particularly "pretty" or readable (IMO), but it should be serviceable enough if needed. Since it's a "large character set" loading it may burden some computers, especially for older OS versions if they've got a lot of other fonts installed. It's one of the "standard fonts" in a default installation of Vista, but may not be available to users of older (Windows) Operating Systems. Even if that particular font is on a machine, the OS/browser may choose a different one to render characters outside the font selected by the user. Some browsers can apply "looks like" translations to select an alternative font that contains extended characters, so glyphs like those illustrated may be visible – or not – by people reading your posts. Most current browsers (and wp programs & such) can "find a font" containing any properly defined character if it's identified by its Unicode Character Number, but characters using "symbol utilities" contained in some OS versions and in some wp and browser programs are "variously successful" since some of those methods rely on local "glyph maps" that use non-standard character numbers along with a special font. For any character that isn't on your keyboard it probably is still preferable that you insert your "special character" in a post at mudcat using the html code and the Unicode char number To show ❂ you would type ❂ To show ♞ you would type ♞ To show ☹ you would type ☹ To show ☎ you would type ☎ To show ❤ you would type ❤ To show ✂ you would type ✂ To show ☜ you would type ☜ To show ☸ you would type ☸ To show 〠 you would type 〠 To show ☃ you would type ☃ To show ✌ you would type ✌ Unicode defines character numbers for about 4 million unique characters. Some of them might be considered "cute." Most "western computers" are capable of entering and displaying approximately 2,000 characters that are in most common use. That means that approximately 0.0000535 percent of the characters you can "theoretically" post here will be legible while the rest of them will be meaningless and illegible. It is suggested you don't f**k around indiscriminately with the 99.99465 percent that aren't going to work. If you feel you MUST USE a character that's even remotely questionable, you need to check the preview box and look at what's going to appear IF you post it. If you can't read it in the preview, it's fairly likely that nobody else can either. (Even if you can read it, about half of mudcat readers may still be unable to read anything more than a little unusual, and there's no monetary value in getting tagged with an "Amos Award.") John |

Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page From: GUEST,Crowhugger, cookie crumbled.
