Subject: Why were my messages deleted?

Last night I signed up for membership here, and posted two questions about tunes. Both threads have disappeared. Can someone tell me why?

My guess would be that, like your opening post here, were done under an anonymous 'GUEST' entry.

Nope, it's way dumber than that! I'm unfamiliar with the site (obviously) and I just didn't look hard enough! Please excuse the newbie.

I just refreshed your other thread, Marcia. It may have dropped off the page thus explaining why you thought it had been deleted.

Notice that across from the "start a ne thread" thing--which on my machine is in blue--there is a kinda box that says Age 1 Day. Use the down arrowhead (in black) to chage that to 3 Days or whatever. That will bring your thread from obscurity into your view.

Best regards.

There's one other thing that's really frustrating, and that happens quite often. Sometimes, your computer will display a Mudcat page that is stored on your computer, and is not freshly loaded. If you enter a message on that stored page, it won't post on Mudcat. So....it's a good practice to double-check each time you post a message, to be sure the message "took."

If the message didn't post, you can usually (not always) retrieve it by using the "back" button on your browser to go back to the page where you typed it. Highlight [CTRL-A] the text and Copy [CTRL-C] it to the clipboard of your computer, and then reload the page by pushing the F5 key on your computer or clicking the circular-arrow "refresh" icon on your browser. Then Paste [CTRL-V] the text into the message box, and submit.

When I type especially long or profound messages, I copy the text to my clipboard before submitting, so I have a backup copy in case the message doesn't "take."

Usually, when messages don't post, it's for technical reasons. We rarely delete messages.

Downeast where? Are we talking US, UK, or where?

Friend of mine from Santa Fe did a brilliant CD with musos there called West of the Pecos. But he also spends a lot of time in Ireland, so when he gigged the album live here, he got together another band, and called us... you guessed it... Way Way Way East of the Pecos

Would love further info on Marcia's show (is it streamable?). I missed her other threads, not sure what they are. Clickie, anyone?

Hmmm. I thought "downeast" was in Maine, on the other side of the "singing bridge" north of Ellsworth. Are there other downeasts?

From Wikipedia

In New England, the term Down East is applied in several different ways. In the narrowest sense, Down East refers to the coast of the U.S. state of Maine from Penobscot Bay to the Canadian border.

"Down East" can be best described as any point on the coast between Searsport and the Canadian border. At times, it is jokingly referred to as any point along the coast, east of the speaker.

The Down East, The Magazine of Maine FAQ explains the origin of the term: "When ships sailed from Boston to ports in Maine (which were to the east of Boston), the wind was at their backs, so they were sailing downwind, hence the term 'Down East.' And it follows that when they returned to Boston they were sailing upwind; many Mainers still speak of going 'up to Boston,' despite the fact that the city lies approximately 50 miles to the south of Maine's southern border."[1]

Yayyy BOSSSSSStonnnnnn !!!!!!!!! My heart's love and spiritual home in Amerikay (even though I'm originally a Californian). I went to college in Boston and part of me has stayed there ever since. Somebody PLEASE tell me they have not suffered in that horrible (?)hurricane that was forecast. I've been out all day and have been using that as an excuse not to look at the weather news.

Thanks for the link, Jeri - will check it out as soon as I've posted this.

Bonnie (on the south coast of Ireland)

I note that the last post by Marcia still showed "GUEST, Marcia..." indicating that she's still not logged in.

At the top of the "front page" where the list of threads is shown, there's a "Quick Links" box. Clicking the arrow will roll down a list of the links, and "Log In" should be right at the top. Click "Log In" and then the "Go" button.

At the Log In page, type your "user name" and and the password you used when you joined us.

The "quick check" for whether you're logged in is the appearance of your user name at "From:" in the box where you type a new post, at the bottom of any thread. If it shows "GUEST" you probably will want to Log In before posting. That way we'll all know what you look like here, and you'll be able to easily find all your previous posts.

In a thread where you've posted, clicking your name at a post will take you to a list of all the posts made (using that name). Clicking your name (or anyone else's) in the list of posts at the top of the thread will take you directly to the specific post in the thread.

Deleting the cookie you get from mudcat will effectively "log you out" but at least in my browser, if "mudcat.org" is listed as a trusted site, using Windows "disk cleanup" won't remove your mudcat cookie even if you check the "delete cookies" so (usually) you'll still be logged in the next time you come back.

Most people here just leave themselves logged in when they come and go, and some have been logged in for so long they forget how to fix it if their cookie gets broken and they need to do it again.

John

I got a call from my aunt-in-law in Rhode Island a couple of hours ago. At the time, they were still waiting for the hurricane to hit. Some of the family felt the earthquake, but Aunt Agnes didn't.

Marcia isn't registered, John. I'm waiting for her to e-mail me.

Heh heh, here in Ontario "down east" (or even "down home") means Atlantic Canada.

Welcome, Marcia!

Welcome, Marcia. Have enjoyed WUMB's programming for several years. Friend on Cape Cod told me about all the great Celtic music on it.:-)

My daughter in eastern CT is getting ready for the hurricane. It's supposed to start up by Sat. night and hit by Sunday. She's not too worried; we made it through Hurricane Bob in '91 okay, though there was a lot of tree damage and loss of power.

Apart from actual loss of life, tree-damage is one of the things that most breaks my heart. Thinking of those beloved tall trees on the Common & the Esplanade :-(

Thanks for all your kind and helpful replies! Here's a better link for my show: http://ceilidh.org

"Downeast" as far as my show is concerned is, like Crowhugger says, Atlantic Canada. It's downeast from Maine, you see — farther downeast!

Next February I will have been doing this show for 40 years!

For my people, 'downeast' was always downhome - i.e., the Maritimes (& Nfld!).

How come nobody says "Down West"?

Howdy, Marcia, from the Great State of Idaho, where I ain't at the moment 'cause I'm in Tacoma.

How come nobody says "Down West"?

'Cause West is "Out West" not down in my neighborhood. But where I'm from East is usually "Back East." But you can be "Out Back" although from there it was more commonly "'Round in Front" since back in the day people usually hung out it the back yard. It's really best to be "Up Front" most times though.

Even for all the years I was THERE it was still "out west". And "back east" was where my mother came from, even though that was only as far east as Illinois. (I suppose anywhere east of California would qualify - which is like pretty much everywhere).

Back East always had some sort of mystical hold on my child's mind. Which it lived up to, when I finally got there.

For a long time the "jumping off place" between back east and out west was at Chicago. Until the big land grab that settled the Oklahoma territory some, anything west of Chicago was "the frontier."

The transition between "wild" and "civilized, some say," moved to Kansas City (sort of) at about the time that Oklahoma became civilized enough to become a state in 1907. Your mother probably wasn't around then, but your grandparents may have been, so it hasn't been all that long.

Of course once most of the territories became states, we got politicians, and the differences got less distinct (due to the merging of crimial styles?); but people still have the handed down traditions.

John
