They would certainly be upset by what he could do with a few fishes.

... and how can we thank the nice men in white coats who let him out to play with us each afternoon?

I had considered bringing my own sax (a C melody which can go MUCH louder than that) but don't generally go in for decibel arms races. Though for this eventuality maybe I ought to just learn the bombarde.

I realise that I have joined this thread rather late, but would like to make a response to some of earlier discussion.

I had been a regular fan and visitor to Whitby FF for about 15 years. I was flattered to be regularly booked at the festival under one guise or another so this is from a performers' viewpoint. The unique quality of the festival which Malcolm took so much time to promote and protect was that all the artists who performed, whatever their musical genre, all got on with each other, were willing to work hard for the festival and enjoyed each other's company. It was a wonderful example of 'the sum is greater than all the parts'. Malcolm had a gift for bringing together performers of all backgrounds who 'as a whole' delivered a wonderful festival ... not only for the ticket holders and supporters, but also for the artists themselves. Thank you Malc.

Both of my sons now in their thirties were brought up with Whitby Festival as one of their annual holidays and though I wouldn't describe them as hard and fast folkies (most of the time they were into heavy metal)they thoroughly entered into the spirit of the festival, such that even though they now live in London with high-power jobs it takes a great deal to cause them to miss their annual pilgrimage. Okay a lot of this is to do with Whitby itself which is a wonderful place to be, and part of it was their involvement in the fringe activities, but they also have totally fond memories of Malcolm, and the festival wouldn't have been anywhere as good without his stewardship.

This doesn't take anything away from the team he had working for him, and indeed the current team who are doing their best to maintain a similar ethos.

>>but they also have totally fond memories of Malcolm<<

Sorry dad, but my main memories of Malcolm are of him swearing at me during the cricket matches. I wouldn't mind, but I was playing alongside him for Yorkshire at the time.

But to be serious (just to stress: the above isn't serious. I genuinely don't remember anything but good-natured banter during the highly enjoyable cricket matches in the decade or so I played in them. I do remember, however, John O'Hagan once catching me after he'd strolled onto the pitch for a spot of fielding while out walking his dog. Oh the shame...), Whitby Folk Festival has always been and remains about as enjoyable week as you can spend in a folk setting in my opinion. And this is down to the way that Malcolm and others built up the festival, and subsequent organisers have thankfully carried it on (though I do miss the Bop Till You Drops. And Roy Atkinson's wonderfully bonkers fringe competition. And the Salami Brothers. And... ah, you get the idea). Being a 14-year-old in a rough Hull senior school explaining to your friends why you were going to a folk festival for a week instead of joining them in the rush to get to Torremolinos or Benidorm was never easy but always well worth it, as Whitby was, without fail, special. Malcolm is the chief reason for that and will always have my eternal thanks. Though I'd never tell him to his face. Obviously.

Could not agree with the sentiments expressed in the above , although I am an old folkie explaining to friends you had a great holiday dashing about in Whitby to one event and the other staying up till 3am after late night extras is a mystery to most of my contempories on the golf course.   But I would not swap Whitby for any of the "fashionble " hot resorts it pales into insignificance with meeting up with old friends and being just another folkie at Whitby, happy days long may it thrive.

None of the above alters the fact that the present committee knows perfectly well where Malcolm is if they want to ask his opinion.
Neither did I ever say that Malcolm had done a bad job.

I have had at least Three bad experiences with Malcolm, but I have never said that he did not run a well organised festival.
Every other festival I have played in England,Chippenham ,Sidmouth, Warwick, Tenterden,Redcar,Saltburn,Broadstairs, Towersey,FourFools, Lancaster,Fylde,I have been treated well by the organisers.
Yes he organised the festival well, but I am not shedding Crocodile tears
I am pleased that the festival is continuing to make Whitby a success, and that the present committee are doing an excellent job of running the festival, long may that continue.

Steve Gardham .
Back in the late 1970s,before Malcolm was running the festival, I along with a number of other singers, who included The Wilson Family,John Knight, Anne Gregson,Chris Timson,Pete Stephenson, decided to start the singing session in the pub then known as The Cutty Sark, this very successful session continued for many years.
We started this session originally as a fringe event, It was so popular it became part of the Official Whitby programme.
I do not need you to tell me about what makes Whitby the festival it is, as I was one of the people that was instrumental in starting that singaround and have contributed to this festival a fair bit over the years.
Richard Gardham, your cricketing experience was quite different from mine,Malcolm shouted right across the cricket pitch, it was not friendly sledging, but unpleasant abuse [after he had caught and bowled me], it was unnecessary, aggressive and extremely rude, and not the sort of behaviour,I expect from anyone least of all a Folk Festival Organiser, It typified the disrespect, lack of consideration bad manners and boorish behaviour,,that I experienced on 2 other occasions.
I must have done at least fifteen to twenty other festivals over the years, and by contrast every other organiser treated me as they would have expected to be treated themselves, with courtesy and good manners.
Yes,the festival was efficently organised, and yes he did a good job keeping it going, now there is a new Committee they are also doing a good job they need to get on with the organisation in their own way.

I too have enjoyed WFF for many years as a paying attendee and a a musician, in various guises - and at many other festivals.
To a non performer, this may seem picky( but it is not). In the theatre, there was not even one steward to look after back stage and given that it was so hot, there was not even any bottled water provided for artists and more so, there was initial resistance from stewards to provide any. Now we are not talking prima donnas here - but a little attention to providing for artists would go a long way. Many other festivals provide so much more for artists - I do not crave that but just expecting water is not asking too much, surely - would organisers like to comment?
