Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 06 Nov 11 - 01:38 AM There is a You Tube of 'Lorena' sung as a duet by Johnny Cash and Burl Ives. |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: katlaughing Date: 06 Nov 11 - 01:54 AM Anyone had a chance to see this, yet? Hi, Rex, sorry it took me so long to get back in here! Can't wait to see this! |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Desert Dancer Date: 07 Sep 11 - 12:38 AM Thanks for the tip, Rex! (Though I'm looking for a good time to take the boys to the MIM, too.) ~ Becky in Long Beach |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Rex Date: 06 Sep 11 - 11:52 PM Maybe Desert Dancer would like to see us perform closer to Tucson? Can do. We will be offering two shows on the 27th at the Western National Parks Association So if you can't make it to Phoenix, maybe we'll see you in Tucson. Rex |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Rex Date: 06 Sep 11 - 11:47 PM Oops, I should remember you can't just paste links in here. Thanks to Wesley S for cleaning that up. Yep, Hoyle is in the film sure enough. Our filming overlapped somewhat and we got to visit and play some tunes with friends while in Santa Fe. It is good to see the interest in Lorena. But not unexpected. Lorena is a great song and The Searchers is a great film. And, anything John Hartford does is great. Thanks for the postings. Likewise with the 97th. They're alright. As for the fiddle, that's all I hear when I think of Lorena. The song is on my first CD with Mark Gardner. And while it was published in '57, it was an important song for the Civil War in both the North and South. Hi Kat, nice to see you chime in. Rex |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Desert Dancer Date: 06 Sep 11 - 05:52 PM Rex, I see that you and Mark Gardner are coming to the wonderful Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix with the exhibition of his photograph collection, The Power of Music, Photographic Portraits of Americans and their Musical Instruments, 1860-1915. Might be a good time for me to make that trip up there with my son and his friend! (It's on the north side of Phoenix, so a good hour and a half from home in Tucson.) ~ Becky in Long Beach (but in Tucson half the time) |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: jacqui.c Date: 06 Sep 11 - 05:08 PM Took my grandson to see the movie. He wants the DVD when it comes out. It was a fun film and I did like the bit of folk music included. Thanks Rex. |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 06 Sep 11 - 02:16 PM There's a MIDI of it on the ingeb site. I've added it to my piano repertoire. The site says it's from 1857. I don't see any real connection to the Civil War. |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Sep 11 - 12:30 PM Here's a fiddle version - it really makes a difference what instrument it is played on, doesn't it? SRS |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Sep 11 - 12:26 PM Lorena (this one by John Hartford) appears in many versions on YouTube. This is also a nice version (97th Regimental String Band). SRS |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: katlaughing Date: 06 Sep 11 - 12:01 PM REX! That is too effing kewl! They couldn't found a better fiddler for authenticity, skill, and looks! Congratulations! kat |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Sep 11 - 11:48 AM There don't seem to be more graphics (it says click the photo for more) - do you have any more photos of the set? Time Travel Music has a trailer for the film (and you get a glimpse of the fiddler). That's very clever, suggesting a Spielberg homage after the Ford tune. :) SFS |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Desert Dancer Date: 06 Sep 11 - 11:35 AM Early in the film, bar scene, impossible to miss. :-) ~ Becky in Long Beach |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Mr Red Date: 06 Sep 11 - 11:34 AM gizza clue where when who? I may be busy looking for continuity errors otherwise (boredom factor indicator). I have seen the reviews of the film and - not my kinda film - but with added interest it would be worth a squint. |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 06 Sep 11 - 09:46 AM Thanks, Rex. That's neat. |
Subject: RE: Catter in Cowboys & Aliens From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 05 Sep 11 - 11:19 PM wow! |
