Subject: Shanties on the Thayer... anyone there? From: SeanM Date: 27 Sep 99 - 06:14 PM Heya folks... Just was at the Festival of the Sea out at the Hyde St. Pier in San Francisco this weekend, and happened to catch a great "demonstration", basically a singalong with Dick Holdstock, Tom Lewis, and other incredible singers... My question... There was a shanty sing that night on board the Thayer, and they hinted that Mr.s Lewis, Holdstock, and several other "Guests of Honor" would be attending... I unfortunately had other plans that couldn't be broken, but I'm trying to find out who all was there... building that case for justifiable homicide... Thanks! M |

From: radriano Date: 28 Sep 99 - 12:56 PM Dear SeanM: One of the guests that night was the incredible John Roberts, one of the best English traditional singers ever. Another guest was Revel Carr who used to lead the shanty sing in prior years. Maryide was also there. Dick Holdstock didn't make it to the shanty sing. Riggy led the event - hey, Riggy, who were some of the other guests there? I'm having one of those senior moments again. Oh, by the way, I was one of the incredible shanty singers taking part in the demonstration (what a shy and unassuming creature I am). radriano |

We unfortunately didn't have much time, but visited the Balcutha out of fondness for the ship... and lo and behold, ran across the treat of the day... 'specially loved "Orpheus"... one of my personal favorites, but not often heard... Boy, do I need to move up there. M |

Mordcai Benherschel from the S.O.B.'s who came all the way from Hawaii, David Lovine from Wash state. My senior moment came when I forgot the lines on some of the tunes on stage at the closing of the event. I think the group saved me though in-between laughter....Yes, It was wonderful..We had not had a night like that in over a year..W. Wages |
